Rick,

Thanks. Superb! This is fun. Tomorrow I'll use my APO 280/4! :D

That's what I really like about high MP count FF sensors.

One gets a nice overview shot.

The crop then gives the next level of detail.

Okay, well then there are the big guns for yet another level or two of detail...

Listen to the video. They state that the sensor is top of the top with conventional lenses and Rf lenses.

But, I do agree that Sony A7 and A7R + Leica lenses, for most Leica lenses, are in no way going to come close to Leica's technology employed in their sensor + Leica lenses. That is obvious now.

At this point I think we all have to move on and decide for ourselves if, second party lenses outside of the Leica M catalog are going to bring enough to these Sony bodies to make them worth $2,500.

For me, the answer is no. The lenses I have look, by far, better on the M240. And, I learned that, I let some opinions presented here and my desire for something newer and better sway me to believe that Sony had better technology. And, that the technology was more important than the "ethos" of taking photographs.

I'm back to being LeicaRick for now.

I'm in the same boat as many here, with an a7r sitting next to my M9. I checked my LR catalog, and %40 of my M9 photos over the last three years are with the 35 Summilux ASPH, and another %40 with the 21 Elmarit ASPH.

On the Sony, the 35 is great in the center at all stops, but needs f8-f11 for the corners to look almost as good as the 35 Zeiss FE at f4. It's okay---kind of uninspired, though. Using this lens on the M9 is really fun, but on the Sony its mojo is lost. A waste of potential.

The 21 Elmarit is my favorite lens on the M9, and is awful on the a7r. The corners smear like mad, and never get even close to uprezzed M9 quality at any aperture. Beyond wasted, on the Sony this lens is sickly.

The a7r menu system is huge and confusing, too many controls are strangely placed, the custom settings don't do enough to fix the incoherent interface, and too much of the design seems hasty.

The a7r sensor is absolutely wonderful. The camera's size and weight is amazing, and the build quality seems solid and strong, good for many years (but not pointless decades) of hard use. It works beautifully with the native 35, a great little lens. Despite initially hating the interface, I'm getting used to it okay. The finder is quite good. I love black and white conversions with the 35 FE at iso 6400. It is shockingly good with my one R lens, a 180 f3.4 APO.

What a confusing little camera---I love it and hate it. I wish there were a native 18 or 21 to try out---ultimately, that will probably send the camera back for me.

I kind of gave up with m-lenses on the A7r, except for the ZM Sonnar 50 and occasionally the AA90 and 75 Summarit. The rest is a mix of the 35ZE and rediscovered MF Nikkors. As I recently got a black DF, the Nikkors will be used on the A7r and the Nikon body.

Even the 50 Summilux asph looses its magic on the A7r. In summary, the A7® is no match for digital Leica bodies for m-lenses. But it`s a great little camera for many other uses. But my Leica M-lenses will have to continue to impress on my trusty M9.

Here is what I'm thinking, I welcome any input...

I feel I'll get good performance with my 90 Summicron-M pre-asph, and I believe one or both of my Elmar-M 50 and Noctilux F1 will do well. So I am thinking about something wide in R to start with.

I am looking at all Elmarit-Rs - the 35mm or maybe the the 28 3cam. And for really wide the 19mm. Do you have any experience with these, Rick (or anyone else), that may help me to assemble a solid kit for the A7r and maybe the M240 at some point?

Thanks

The Elmarit-R 28 is better than the equivalent M lens of the period and still reasonably compact. It should be fine on the Sony.

But what about when you're in a non-APO lens mood?

Well, clearly RickLeica alias RickSony alias ... needs a guardian. Here s/he is.

Have a nice weekend!

Polygamer, this is better than beer and I will have Alzheimer's disease later with red wine :D

Beautiful color glass of red wine

To return to the A7, Rick think the A7 is not suitable for R or M lenses below 50mm if I read correctly (or misread in this case Rick forgive me)

Karl him is for télé lenses ...and other (see his pictures)

.... but as Rick changed his nickname ("SonyRick" becomes "RickLeica") I do not know what I should do.:D

My question is:

I have optical R (35-135mm) & M (28-135mm) . I could take the A7 or A7R ?

Anyway everything is manual (not electronic) is not it ? if I put Leica lens with adapter ?

I do not know if I will not wait for AF Zeiss optics. I want to take pictures of surgery when I work in the operating room.Currently I use M8 and M9

but not enough Isos

Thank you for your advice and counsel :)

Best

To be honest, for medical photography I use the Digilux 3 with the kit lens, Olympus extender and Olympus ring flash and have never felt the need for anything else. I just wrap the thing with a bit of sticky plastic (I have a kind of wide Sellotape pads I use for any unsterilizable surface) as infection barrier and it always delivers. Quite a bit better than the stuff I normally see on presentations at congresses I might add. ;)

Hi Henry,

Which R lenses do you have?

Presumably they will be fine on the A7R.

Actually, I own an R 50mm Summilux. It produced gorgeous pictures on the A7R. As a matter of fact this would be the 50mm lens I would get for the A7 or A7R while they are relatively cheep. I don't have anything picture-wise to post except shots at night around the house from a dinner party, and that wouldn't be fair to the guests. But, you can imagine that 50 Summilux look from a lens that may be better than the M counter part. I'd buy this lens before I'd even consider some big Sony/Zeiss 55mm/1.8. The Summilux just has that look wide open. Here is the best I can do... camera porn!

There are soooooo many R 'luxes, I wouldn't know where to begin. I know just about nothing (except what I've read in this thread) about the R system or lenses.
