Did you ever test a 21 mm SEM on an A7 camera? I did search your site but could not find anything.

From reports of tests of the lens (M 21mm f3.4) on among other sources, Fredmiranda.com the perfromance of the lens on the A7 cameras and particular as I recall the A7r has been rather dismal. That was the M wide angle lens that I wanted for my A7r. But unfortunately the performance of the lens on A7r cameras was so poor that I purchased a Contax (C/Y) 21mm f2.8 Zeiss Distagon for my camera. I later replaced the Distagon largely due to the size and weight for the much more expensive M Wide Angle Tri-Elma (WATE).

No, I don't have one. I did test the Zeiss 21mm ZF.2, and it did great. However, that's a much larger and heavier lens.

Here's a test of the 24 Elmar on the a7R:

Not bad.

Even on the A7s it is not much better (Smearing) - Unfortunately ...

Apparently the new Voigtländer 15mm MkIII is designed to work well with the A7 series. It will at least offer a compact alternative to the WATE or larger faster wide angle lenses.

But there is nothing else from Leica, in the same price/size range as the 21mm SEM, that works well on the A7 series. Right?

There is nothing else in the present Leica M system in the UWA range including the 21mm f3.4 SEM price range that performs well on the Sony A7 cameras that I am aware of at this time.

As to the coming Cosina Voigtlander 15mm MKIII, it has been suggested that it will perform well on the A7 series cameras, but we will need to see such performance to demonstrate this once it is in the hands of owners for review.

Hopefully, Zeiss will have an UWA Loxia lens that will be released later this year or possibly next year that will perform well on the A7 series cameras.

Until then, we are all forced to either use the small M mount lenses (in the case of Leica M, these are expensive) that work well on these cameras or use SLR/DSLR lenses if we want MF lenses or lenses lacking focus by wire (as in the case of Sony' own lenses).

Another solution specifically for Leica-Sony combination is to have a thinner sensor stack installed in the camera, Kolarivision has started to offer a service like this (not for the A7II), there is a test on Lensrentals as well, there is a thread about it at fredmiranda, and I guess more comparisons could follow later on as well.

The current CV 15mm works very well on the A7S as do other most other wide angles

However the base A7 model is always going to have performance designed for Sony and flat field lenses.

For Ming Sony will never be there, even after Canon and Nikon are a distant memory.

I remember him dissing the A7 before he had even touched it.

It's full of emotion and inaccuracies:

1. Yes Sony is incrementally trying to improve

2. The three A7 are a sliding scale of resolution vs noise - get it!

3. I find the menu very logical, more so then his pet Nikons

4. Cynical - "I suppose Sony had to get something for their investment in Olympus", because he can not acknowledge the engineering brilliance of Sony engineers ...

The only point I agree is compression, but he overtstates it, and repeats it 10 times

Good grief

Thanks for summarizing Ming's bias.

Now if someone reads both Ming Thein's and Steve Huff's review and averages them that should leave an interesting impression.

I am waiting for the A9 or A7RII or whatever they call it before buying another Sony camera.

My favorite cameras are, in no particular order, M9, D200, D3, D800E, NEX-5N/7, A7R, and E-M5/1.

There you have it, my bias. I think each camera offers something special for my interests.

I was quite excited by the Sony 5n and A7r when I bought them, but soon felt disappointed for many of the reasons Ming gives. I still have a complete set of Novoflex E-mount adapters in the hope they deliver something I like. But I suspect Sony just isn't for me.

My favourites Leica M (any flavour), Leica T and SWC (there is something oddly enticing about those square negatives).

Sony? Having bought many Sony products, going back to the original Walkman, I don't get it. Too many different storage cards, too many options, just ... too much, rather than doing one thing well. Never understood the menus either.

Before I'm labelled a Sony basher, I have owned Walkmen, Handycams, TVs, video gear and two mirror less cameras - I understand perfectly why they don't work for me, but I'm stupid enough to think one day they might ...

Big departure guys.

I have the new Loxia lenses on order and will buy them just in case the new a7?? hits a home run--like electronic shutter and no compression DNG files. And K-H lets hope they do not change the batteries!

Also will get the Loxia 28 or 25 when and if it comes out. Over 50 FL seems I can use my Leica lenses.

I see that as a positive — I like incremental improvements. Keep'em coming! Not every camera needs to be a big redesign. He seems to want bigger/more improvements coming at less frequent intervals. Just skip a generation of cameras and you've got that.

I do agree that a battery charger should be included. That is a strange omission.
