500mm MR-Telyt-R 1:8.0

500mm MR-Telyt-R 1:8.0 with 2x-APO extender

I have no experience with such a device. Needs likely more work under better controlled conditions to arrive at a valid conclusion.

Thanks again for letting me look at your images.

I believe both your and my extenders need a lot more work to determine how useful they are.

I think jury is still out for my A7R lens and extender combinations as well.

Having now had the benefit of a few days with the 55/1.8 in the hope that it would convince me that the A7r would be a good long term back-up to an M ...... with the benefits of autofocus with its native lenses when I needed it ......

..... I can emphatically say it isn't, never will be ....... and I am selling it. (pm me if interested :p)

I have had this for 5 weeks and used it extensively and have found the whole experience frustrating and disappointing.

Like RickLeica I could fill a page with reasons....... but suffice it to say I have returned to 100% M use with a sigh of relief. Images are better and using it is a pleasure.

Sorry .... but I find it very hard to agree with those heavily promoting this camera on this thread as the best thing since sliced bread .... for me it isn't .....

Yup

We all have different expectations and priorities.

This thread has evolved from unrealistic expectations to a rational discussion on how to get the best from the camera from those for whom it fulfils their needs and wishes.

No problem with that at all...... as long as it's based on fact rather than supposition ...

Someone is going to end up with a cheap A7r + lenses and no doubt they will be very happy with it.

I'll be buying a 90/2 apo asph with reclaimed cash .....:)

Thanks for the feedback; I generally agree with almost all of it. I'm going to get a new ballhead/tripod from B &H (Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs (Black) with 410 055XPROB,410) and retest when the weather calms down. After working in downtown Minneapolis for 15 years, I avoid it as much as possible (although I'm there at least once a week on business),

I've got a big deadline looming and will be out of the country skiing late January, so probably won't get back to this until February.

I have Lightroom 5.3 and Photoshop CC; by "Lens Cast Corrections LCC" you're referring to Capture One, right? I'm presuming the Adobe equivalent would be its DNG Flat Field plug-in (which requires a calibration image I believe)?

Anyway, there are a lot of variables here and next time I'll try to control them better if I can. I think a better ballhead and use of color correction software might be important, but I doubt with my limited methodology I'll ever be able to generate definitive results, just interesting anecdotal observations.

Now back to my fixing my hard drive crash on the other desktop . . .

Bob,

Back to your earlier post with R lens samples taken with M240 and A7R, can you please clarify what make of R-M adapter was used to mate R lenses with M camera. In case of Elmarit 19mm Mk 2 there is strong vignetting in all 4 corners but image looks pretty sharp to me.

Bob

The 19mm works pretty well on the Sony. The left side of the picture seems to be better than the right side.

Vignetting corners could be corrected by the firmware in the M, I suppose.

The test with the 500mm is very interesting too. Did you mount the camera on the tripod in this case? Or did you use a tripod collar?

Choosing Leica lenses for a Leica camera isn´t false.

1. To buy a backup camera with completely different properties is nonsense in my opinion.

2. I didn´t like the Dlux-4 with its SCN-modes. I am not a teener any more.

See Bob even computers say they are not going to take it anymore. At minus 10 or 15 degrees I cannot blame them. I heard your wind chill is going to minus 60 soon. Holy cow!!

Lou,

I was out this morning and it's dangerously cold. They say at these wind chills, skin freezes in two minutes. The big thing on the local radio is that there is a place in Siberia where today it's -50 (F), and it's -38(F) in Saskatoon, so we should all feel lucky even though it's colder here today than either Antarctica or Alaska. Maybe time to move to Florida!

We rescued a stray cat this weekend that for sure would have died in the cold. To make matters worse our neighbor said it got into a scape with a coyote, but now it seems fine, just some scabs over the wounds.

Anyone in need of a new pet?:D

Mladin, I've got a Novoflex R-M adapter on loan from Ken Hansen while I'm waiting [a long time] for the Leica version (which I think will be better if only because it has a tripod collar).

I presume the Novoflex adapter is up to the job, but as others have noted, the adapter seems to be a factor in the equation and cost does not necessarily mean better flange accuracy (although one would certainly think so!).

Jan,

The 500mm mirror lens doesn't have a tripod collar; it's quite small, only about 28 ounces/790 grams and just 5" long. It's subject of course to the shortcomings of any mirror lens, but on the M it seems to be a stellar performer and I love the form factor. I use the camera's tripod socket when shooting with this lens on a tripod but I think the Leica R-M adapter would be better as it has its own rotating tripod collar and the lens/camera combo would find a better balance point on a tripod that way.

Speaking of difficulties in assessing the performance of these lenses on the M vs. the Sony, I've noticed that some lenses that I did not think performed all that well on my M9-P are great on the M -- in particular, my 50 f/2.8 Elmar-M (collapsible), my 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M, and, most especially, the 500 mm mirror lens. I had almost decided to sell my 90 mm because on the M9-P it seemed a bit soft as compared to the 75mm Summicron, yet on the M it's completely acceptable. The 500mm mirror lens was a dog on the M9-P but is fantastic on the M. Same photographer (me), same approach (always a tripod and self-timer). At first I thought this couldn't be, but now I wonder if the M resolves differently with different lenses? So maybe it's not just an M vs. Sony thing, but broader in scope than that. Who knows, it's perplexing to me.

I've got a new Manfrotto 410 geared ballhead coming on Wednesday and if it warms later this week I might try some more [anecdotal, non-scientific] test shots, presumably with a more stable set-up and less wind, just for kicks.

Well the more I follow this thread the more I'm glad that I redirected the funds to my recently-acquired glorious 1.4/75 Sumilux-M :)

Good choice, Mark. I'm holding onto my A7r until I see what Zeiss release later this year.

You got a great deal on your 75 Summilux if it was the price of an A7r ...

I have this 500er myself. On my crop camera it has a focal length of 750mm! I have used it for astronomical purposes (eclipse) only. Close ups of my dogs give remarkable results, they get as flat as pancakes.:)

I asked, because with a tripod collar the shutter movement could be worse (working on a longer arm). But I don´t dare to put the camera on the tripod with this lens (+adapter). I work with a collar.

I spent 2 years + living in Canada a L O N G time ago, this reminds me why I didn't stay

Be careful since my new acquired Leica R-M adapter does not rotate and has a tripod foot not a collar. I did add an RRS QR plate #82S to the tripod foot for my QR needs.

So do not come to Florida tonight as the temps are due to hover around 40 until early morning. Since most do not go out here when the weather dips below 50, I will have a nearby model plane airfield empty for flying my quad copter around and taking video and stills of the nearby wetlands which have deer, bobcat and other wildlife ready for posing for the camera if I can get the zoom to working well.

Officially, I have never had more than five cats.

There are some who believe that I have many more than that.;)

Ok, ok, - there will always exists some unofficial.

It is those who seek shelter in my outbuildings between old car parts and stacks of firewood.

If my surroundings had accepted it, I could always received a sixth cat from Minnesota, - but so it is also the issue around these unofficial.

I'm sorry; - I’m unable to help you.

The same low pressures that draws extreme cold down to the U.S., provides for sucking hot air from Spain to England and the West Coast of Norway, after crossing the Atlantic.

Here, it has now been raining continuously for one month, with temperatures far from what one would expect midwinter.

If nothing else, it's always good for the animals.

The FE 1.8/55 is the lens to get for the A7®. M lenses are too much of a compromise on the Sony neither allowing to exploit the potential of the sensor nor the lens` potential.

Thanks for the link. This was only n excerpt in German. The full article in English can be found here: Most Adorable 50s - Zeiss Otus & Sonnar, Leica Noctilux & Summilux, SLR Magic HyperPrime
