Thanks Bart. Looks great.

As I have that lens and the WATE my WA needs are covered except for 24 mm.

That's the only focal length I never got an M lens for.

But I have that covered with 3 different lenses on my D800E. ;)

Also, the WATE on an APS-C NEX does a nice job filling in that hole in my M lens lineup. :D

Hi, after trials and tribulations, and after reading lots of contributions with very deep thinking here in his thread I got a little restless.

So, I ordered an A7, and will let you know how it does JPEGs ooc with my 21 Leica M mount lenses.

We are talking petty cash with the SONY bodies, so let us not waste time. ---

Until we have something to show,

have a nice time ...

My A7R arrived yesterday - slapped on the Novoflex adapter and the 35 FLE to get a feel for the camera. It's nice in the hand, and largely intuitive.

Will try to work out today how to turn everything off, and to download the raw files (nothing in Adobe yet).

As the issue is the sensor with Leica wides, I propose to take some test shots for those of you still waiting, and for my own benefit. It will be a reasonably boring subject with texture over the entire from, using a tripod, and with all lenses set at f/4, auto everything turned off.

The lenses will be 15/2.8 Distagon ZM, 21 Summilux, 28 Summicron, 35 Summilux, 50 Summilux, Noctilux 0.95, 75 Summilux & 90 Summicron. I'll post a JPEG of each image with a link to the raw file.

Is there anything else people would like me to do? I'm taking my daughter sailing this morning, so I won't be able to post till this afternoon, so feel free to make requests or suggestions.

Cheers

John

Could you comment on the cameras ability to focus the lenses to the infinity mark. The reason I ask is that I have an Olympus adapter for my Olympus E1 which allows me to use legacy OM lenses on that four thirds camera but despite being Olympus made it will not focus at infinity. Thanks for taking the trouble.

Not looking good folks .......

all at f4, shots of a mostly overcast sky, RAW in LR 5.3

Tri-Elmar

16 - vignetting ++, magenta edges and corners ++

18 - vignetting ++, some magenta visible

21 - slight vignetting, trace of magenta in corners

21/3.4. - unusable - ghastly wide magenta edges and vignetting+

24/2.8 - vignetting +, magenta edges

28/2 - vignetting +, magenta edges

35/2 - some vignetting, slight magenta

MATE

28 - some vignetting

35 - OK

50 - OK

50/2.8 collapsible - OK

50/1.4 - OK

50/0.95 - OK

75/2 - OK

90/4 collapsible - some vignetting

135/3.4 - OK

It's a very nice little camera but I fear it is not a good option as a second body for Leica lenses except >50mm.

May try again tomorrow with JPG images and see if any in-camera wizardry improves things (wishful thinking)

There are a selection of drop down profiles in LR .... one of which 'camera portrait' gets rid of most of the vignetting on the wide angle lenses .... and makes the magenta edges more obvious instead so it's not a lot of help....

Not sure if I can justify keeping it ........:(

John, this is a kind offer.

Unlike some, I don't consider its price to be petty cash, (and furthermore I expect the cost of ownership of an A7R will be roughly similar to an M over the period I would expect it to be a camera of choice, given that my M9 cost about £700 pa over almost 3 years, and of course lenses generally cost much, much less than that) so any feedback from someone who's actually taken the plunge and also understands what an M is like to use is greatly appreciated.

I have to disagree with your conclusion that its "Not looking good folks .......".

To get insight into the potential of the camera, there needs to be a comparison of A7r files with M240 files, where either both are uncorrected (for vignetting and magenta shift) or both are corrected. Looking at one camera's uncorrected files in isolation doesn't tell much about how the images will stack up in the end.

You don't mention edge smearing, which would be a much nastier matter as software correction is problematic.

I did test images with my wides:

Tri-Elmar 16-18-21

CV 12mm

ZM C-Biogon 21mm/4.5

Super-Elmar 18mm ASPH

Super-Elmar 21mm ASPH

Elmar 28mm/2.8 ASPH

Canon TS-E tilt/shift

35 mm LUX new

the biggest problem is the 17mm TS-E, with Metabones smart adapter you have severe vignetting and it is unusable

I stacked two adapters, the E- LM and LM - EOS and you get the full images but stacking two cheep adapters is not usable either!

Does anybody know of an adapter for Canon EOS?

and I tried the Zeiss Hologon, you can mount it but the shutter seems to be so far in front of the sensor, that the lens is blocking the shutter. I got "camera error" and had to take out the battery!! (uff, my nerves) Images of the mounted Hologon and close up of the shutter are in my flickr album (link below)

you find the images (also from the EOS adapters) here:

Did you try it with your 16mm Holopgon?

I see that there will be a Contax adapter very soon

Sorry, but Leica have firmware correction of all the lens issues and produce perfect files in LR that need no altering.

Sony will NEVER do this so it will have to be a PP fix .... and a different correction for every lens below 50mm.

Apart from the WATE I would not bother even attempting to use this camera sub 50 with Leica M lenses.

Much as I would like it to be an M substitute/back-up the palaver of adjusting any WA photos make it a non-starter.

I am not blind..... and a child of 3 could spot the problems with these lenses. Anyone that can't is futilely deluding themselves that they haven't wasted their cash.

Using native lenses or 50+ I am sure it is capable of giving the M a run for it's money.

...... and I would also point out that the magenta shift seems to be worse in the bottom corners of the images ..... so it is masked to some extent in most outdoor shots with sky in the top part of the frame....

Most beautifully stated ...

We have an A7 on order, and we shall see how it performs with our 21 Leica M mount lenses ...

and we shall not keep the results to ourselves ...

The problem isn't vignetting or colour shift, that is simple, it is the smearing that can't be corrected in post processing.

But lets not be defeatist, all said and done the A7R body and three Zeiss E mount prime lenses (when available) can be had for less than £4000, £1000 cheaper than an M240 body. In reality it would only be the widest E mount lens that would be needed anyway, but AF and perfect correction may become addictive.
