Dw,

Many thanks again for the downloads, very helpful indeed!

How were you able to control the A7R with your iPad? Is there a network functionality built into the camera or does CameraRanger work with the Sony?

Again, thanks for your great hi-res images.

No worries Bob.

The camera has WiFi built in. You select the network (my home WLAN) and 'run' an app from inside the camera. You then run the Sony app (having installed from app store) and pair the two together with a password. Hey presto - you're controlling it wirelessly and remotely with full live view on a retina display.

PS - Currently panning through an elevated shot out of my office window in 100% Medium Format style wonderment at all the things going on in the city below which I didn't see when I took the shot but which are crystal, pixel perfectly clear on my 27" monitor. Mind blowing IQ.

BTW, the OM-D E-M1 has also builtin wi-fi.

This tech coupled with the right company who has a strong customer satisfaction focus (like Fuji recently) has the power to truly create a dedicated following based on respect and value. Game changing possibilities which I'm only just realising now.

Hi, not sure if this has been posted already, but i found this article, whilst searching for an adobe acrobat raw update, which states that the Sony RAW Converter does a better job than LR.

Another posting that i found but have lost the link too intimated that all auto functions applied by in camera processing of raw files should be turned off and then reapplied by external software like LR. The image used as an example was a cat...it that helps?

These settings can be turned off in the Sony Raw Converter Software

Hi Ali,

Thanks, excellent points.

My experience with Nikon, Sony, and Olympus cameras, i.e. D800E, NEX-7, OM-D E-M1 is typically like this:

• A vendor supplied and vendor specific RAW Converter generally gives more faithful results IMHO.

• Unless it doesn't matter to me that much for a specific image, that's what I use.

• I switch off all sharpening and noise reduction at this stage - if not already done so in camera.

• I use 16 Bits/Channel and ProPhoto RGB and save the image as a TIFF file.

• Then I use CS6 and do all noise reduction and sharpening in Nik only.

For Leica M9 files I prefer to use C1Pro7 over ACR as the RAW Converter.

Does the plastic bayonet mounting bother you as far as longevity is concerned?

Thanks for comments.

As soon as I accept Sony A7R I understand that I loose the privilege as the "purist photographer amateur" and fall into the domain of consumer electronics short life cycle.

Sony brings out A7 not only for photographer but also for suporting her smart phone (remote control, wi-fi, NFC), notebook (video playing, photo browsing) and 4K TV (via HDMI interface). We will expect that A7R will be repalced by other more powerful and versatile successor within 2 years, Therefore, I will use A7R a lot and let it retire soon.

I use M6 for more than 10 years quite happily and the first thing M8 greeted me is the "lock-up" after ony less than 50 actuation. Camera is for taking picture not for "international travelling" to and fro for Solms.

I can't quite tell from Thomas' images whether the Leica 28/2.8 also makes the cut?

Many thanks to Thomas Chen as well for his images indeed!

Thanks K.H. however, which 28/2.8 are you referring? R28/2.8 (posted) or M28/2.8 Elmarit 1994 version. I can do M28/2.8 if you want.

Do you remember couple of weeks ago in this or other thread a method for NEX + Leica lense was given. He suggested that for manual approach, setting apertue and shutter speed then switch to S priority and ISO auto. Higher ISO seems help reduce vigenetting and color shift given the high dynamic of A7R.

And I believe that Sony has deliberately design the FE 35/2.8, a quite strange configuration, to make A7 stand out.

It has been here one month ago.

I always browse ARW file (Sony Raw file name) in Sony's RAW convertor "Image Data Converter ver.4",guessing Sony must have some tricks between her proprietary Raw format and the proprietary convertor. without using DNG format.

You may download from

http://www.sony.co.jp/imsoft/Win/ or

http://www.sony.co.jp/imsoft/Mac/

"Image Data Converter" allows you to convert a ARW file after adjustment into another ARW file or JPEG with different degree of compression or TIFF 16bits.

Many thanks Thomas.

I looked at your images again.

Here is my impression:

21f2.8 ASPH <--- corner problem

28f2 ASPH <--- corner problem

35f2 ASPH <--- corner problem

MATE 28-35-50 <--- longer FL seem useable

R 28f2.8 <--- ?

R21-35f3.5 <--- seem useable

WATE 16-18-21f4 <--- stopped down a bit seem useable.

What do you think?

Thanks again.

K.H. I think my files for M lenses on A7R should be recalled.

Please see waht in the link

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tuauarcoy5isu1m/qHeM5saFg3

In the reality, the sky is a little overcasted and the blue color distributes very evenly all around, but in the files no matter what aperture, the vignetting are so strong.

Then I check the shape of the adapter (Hawk Factory product) and compare it with the R adapter to find that the inner diameter of M adapter is smaller because the built-in helicoid. Therefore, what we see from the images can be attributed to the design of adapter. Hawk Factory adapter works fine on the APS-C sensor however no so on the FF sensor.

As I have only one adapter and I know you have some M-E adpater including Hawk Factory's and Novoflex? I suggest that you make comparison when your A7R arrive, if include Metabones' the better.

I will be off-line in the next 36 hours and will keep on investigate when come back.

I feel sorry to offer the files that may mislead your judgement.

There are many auto functions within A7R, reading thoroughly the manual could be imperative. In fact the manual is not detailed enough facilitating using the camera, Sony should elaborates more stuff about how to make best use of this camera.

Many thanks Thomas, so the situation could improve. That's all good.

Thanks again for your work and the important lessons you already contributed.

By sharing them, as you do, that will definitely save me some trouble and detours.

We hear from you then in a couple of days. Take care.
