Question on Import taxes for M8 from UK or EU?

Hi all,

I just ordered a Leica R4 from Germany so may know my answer soon- but need to know about charges that I may have to pay for ordering a M8 that is much more than the R4. See a few M8s now- so trying to see what options I have.

I live in Austria and have been looking at buying a M8 or M8.2. (M9 if available at within budget). . Came close to getting from US- but then saw some sellers indicating huge import taxes close to 40% of the cost plus Vat in addition to shipping!! So soon cost about double camera costs!

How is it buying from the UK? I thought being in the UK there should be no import tax- just vat? The m8 has no video so no video tax. Otherwise is buying from Germany the best option? I don't want a surprise after paying for the camera. So far more selling M8s in the UK. :)

Many thanks.

Sam

I know nothing about Austrian law but digital cameras coming from outside EU seem to be duty free there according to the DutyCalculator Help Center.

You should then pay the Austrian 20% VAT + the invoice price if you purchase in the USA.

Better ask Austrian Customs to be sure though.

From UK, you should pay the invoice in full including the British VAT (20% as well) that's all.

If bought in the EU you will just pay VAT at the selling country rate and nothing else..... customs will ignore it.

Similarly with a private second hand seller from anywhere in the EU you will pay no VAT.

If buying 2nd hand from a dealer in the EU you may have to pay VAT, if they 'own' it, but not if selling on commission.

If you import from outside the EU you will pay VAT at Austrian rates ..... irrespective of whether new/old or sold privately or by a dealer.

Of course the seller could declare a lower value for customs purposes ...... or declare it as a gift (if allowed in Austria)

As you have one of the largest (and a very fair and honest) second hand Leica dealer on your doorstep I am surprised you are looking elsewhere .....

Leica Shop Home

I've had lots from them.... and their grading is generally conservative and goods are better than described .... and prices are not much more than you would pay on eBay.... and you are taking much less of a risk....

There is always the forum here ....... it is very unusual to hear of problems or dissatisfied buyers/sellers and you will probably get a bargain if prepared to wait and watch..... ;)

My Leica R4 came from Germany and i didnt have to pay anything. :)

The Leicashop here is great. I am there very often! But they have less stock in the M8 at the moment :) But think I am going to settle on a Digilux 2 until then. ;)

I think that should be clarified, its some elements of the current conservative party who consider that, and as a way of getting support rather than a philosophy. I'm not sure even the same party in the past thought that let alone the others

From the continental perspective it looks like 'cling together, swing together' (don't you say so in such cases?). But I am deeply appeased to hear that the isolationistic position is not shared by the mayority of the British.
