Leica M2 Black Chrome

I wanted a black Leica M2. And as i can't afford an original i ordered something which i thought was a repainted chrome version of M2.

But to my surprise when i inspected it, after receiving, it was black chrome. Have you heard about it? I guess it was a factory upgrade? Or are there independent workshops which provides black chroming? I have tried to Google it, but can't find any.

Anyway, i am really happy about it. Near Mint.

Third parts, or faked camera.

Leica never made M2 components in black chrome finish.

Black chrome started well after the M2 production was stopped.

They supplied M2 black paint parts but with M4 flash style engravings on the back of top plate till late '70.

cheers.

From a quick search: Leica M2 no. 948775, black… - The Dr Dinesh Parekh Camera Collection - Leonard Joel Pty. Ltd. - Antiques Reporter - looks black chrome from the pic BUT several parts which are black were never finished in black as far s I am aware (the strap lugs, button rewind and surround) so my guess is that such cameras have been heavily modified at some point......

My camera looks like that. But no button rewind. The backdoor is black paint. But all other details are absolutely black chrome.

So i guess it's some third party doing it. Never mind for me, i paid the same amount as for a regular chrome camera.

Does anybody know who done it? There is a lot of people doing black paint. But i never heard about black chroming.

And it sounds like a stupid fake to do?

Many years ago there was a technician in Rome who black-chromed some Leica M of various kinds (mostly M3, probably some M2 too) ...I do not remember his name... only that it used to work for a then famous camera service lab (Leoni, iirc) ; can you post some pics of your camera ? It's surely an intriguing item, though probably not factory-original.

Not so sure its a 'fake' since none were ever manufactured;). I'd suggest that its 'customised' rather than 'fake' and whilst I wouldn't get it done, I do prefer the look of black cameras myself so can see the appeal.

Here are two quick pictures of the camera.

So it seems to me:

- It was no Leica upgrade/alteration.

- Third party made the alteration.

- And there seems to be one more camera almost like this :-)

I had a baseplate for a M4-2 blackchromed by a U.K. company about 15 years ago. The finish was as near original as I could tell. It would not be a big deal to have all the parts treated in this way to have what you describe. The company as far as I know are still operating.

Best,

Very fine !! Seems it has been kept with much care after the refinishing : is the VF/RF still the std. M2 type ? I ask because, time ago, I asked to a lab the quotation for a CLA of a M2 and they proposed me the exchange of the VF/RF with the M4 type (apparently, more easy to be found as spare, at those times).
