Mixalis Posted August 1, 2013 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere (it must have been, I am sure) but I could not find the thread. I've had my M since March, one of the first to arrive in the UK, and from day one it has suffered random lockups where the camera becomes inoperable. Sometimes this is cured by toggling the on/off switch but more often than not I have to remove the battery. The camera has already been back to Solms once, for the lug recall, and I mentioned the locking when I handed it over to Leica. It came back and soon exhibited the same problems. Incidentally, in case anyone wonders, I have tried loads of SD cards in order to eliminate that as the cause. I suspect I have a sticking shutter. Today I suffered four or five lockups while out doing street photography and I reached the end of my tether. I went straight back to the Leica dealer and the camera is now on its way to Germany. I wrote about it on my blog, Macfilos. I know I am not the only owner to suffer this sort of problem but I do wonder how extensive it is.

ma9ical Posted August 1, 2013 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2013 I used to have lock ups but formated my SD card (sandisk 32GB class 10) with SDformatter and no longer experienced the issue.
lct Posted August 1, 2013 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2013 Never got a single lockup so far but all my cards have been formatted with SDFormatter.
lawman Posted August 1, 2013 Share #5 Posted August 1, 2013 When you format with sd formatter, is it necessary to continue to use this program each time you reformat the card, or can you do it once and then reformat in the M?
lct Posted August 1, 2013 Share #6 Posted August 1, 2013 Once is enough but i redo it if the cam slows down.

erudolph Posted August 2, 2013 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2013 In my case, the infrequent lockup seems to occur when using magnified EVF focusing perhaps while a just-shot image is saving.
Guest WPalank Posted August 2, 2013 Share #9 Posted August 2, 2013 Having never used sdformatter, would someone mind explaining the procedure? Is it: 1) Format in sdf, place in camera, and then only delete files from the card? or 2) Format in sdf, place in camera, then format in camera? Hi William, #2 I suppose. I have tried it out in my M9, D800E, NEX-7, OM-D E-M5. No problems. Can't speak to M. Still waiting for mine.

Ignore this SD formatter. It is not needed. Format in-camera.
Karl G Posted August 2, 2013 Share #12 Posted August 2, 2013 Ignore this SD formatter. It is not needed. Format in-camera. +1. It is mythology. I tested it and made absolutely no difference in start up times. To further reinforce, the lock ups I had occurred with a sd formatted card, no lookups prior. The lockup issue is possibly related to heat or more likely, an intermittent FW glitch related to the LVand EVF function.
HeinzX Posted August 2, 2013 Share #13 Posted August 2, 2013 Just short time ago I had a lockup too. it happened when I was using the LV very intensively to make a lot of macro shots. I am not sure, could be I have tried to take a further shot, when the red light was burning. This was the first time it happened, I Think it has nothing to do with the SD card. After taking out the battery and putting it in the camera afterwards, all worked normally.
lct Posted August 2, 2013 Share #14 Posted August 2, 2013 +1. It is mythology.I tested it and made absolutely no difference in start up times... I disagree strongly. For having tried a dozen SD cards out of the package, including the fastest "pro" ones (Sandisk Extreme Pro, Lexar 600x, Panasonic Gold "pro") on the M240, my advice is to use SDFormatter systematically or, at least, if startup times (from turning the camera on to the first shutter actuation) are significantly longer than 2 seconds. k-hawinkler Posted August 2, 2013 Share #15 Posted August 2, 2013 Interesting diversity of opinion by M owners. What does that imply for the issues at hand? Differences from M to M? Different user patterns? Probably both, my guess.

I agree ..... it is clearly a combination of conflicting functions in firmware that result in the software being stuck in an endless loop till terminated manually. The more electronic gizmos you have working and the more buttons you press ... the more likely it is to happen
thighslapper Posted August 2, 2013 Share #18 Posted August 2, 2013 I disagree strongly. I've not noticed any appreciable difference between formatting in camera and SDF..... ...... but re-formatting does make a difference to some cards .... but it doesn't seem to matter what you use to do it..... FWIW my fastest card is an Eye-Fi pro 16gb ...... which SD formatter will not format as it has something running on it all the time when in the reader...... ...... and it's clearly faster because of the in card PROCESSOR which presumably is beefed up to cope with the Wi-Fi functionality. I can't see how re-formatting confers much benefit apart from clearing out crap..... in the same way that de-fragging a hard drive helps performance.... 01af Posted August 2, 2013 Share #19 Posted August 2, 2013 No lock-ups here, after 1,500 frames since May. I'm using a Pretec SDHC 433× card (32 GB) which I formatted with SDFormatter at some point—but didn't notice any difference. Start-up time was and still is approx. 2 - 2.5 s ... which I consider too long. I'm hoping for the next firmware update.
lct Posted August 2, 2013 Share #20 Posted August 2, 2013 I'm just relating my experience here. Received my last card yesterday. A Sandisk Extreme Pro 8GB. Took 4 seconds to startup our of the package. Same with in camera formatting. Less than 2 secs with SDFormatter. It is now my fastest card with a Panasonic Gold "pro". All samples won't behave the same way i guess but SDFormatter can be downloaded for free so there is no harm to try it if your card is too slow definitely. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
