NeilThomas Posted July 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, Long time lurker, first time poster here! My M6 is not working. When I look through the viewfinder it is very blurry. If I focus the lens then it makes no difference. I took it to a repair shop (non Leica but they said they had a dude there that was good with them) and they told me that they can't help as it is something inside other than the rangefinder mechanism. They advised to send to Leica in Germany which to be honest sounds a bit extreme. Any ideas what could be wrong with it? I don't mind opening it up if that's what it takes. Thanks so much in advance, Neil

Fgcm Posted July 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2013 Hi Neil, Welcome to the forum. Sorry to read that your M6 needs to be repaired. If your dealer suggests to send the camera to Leica, I think you ought to do so. Leica customer service will make a great job and your camera will come back as new. Do not try to DIY. BrianUK Posted July 18, 2013 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2013 Neil, You've taken your M6 to a 'repair shop' who have a 'dude there that was good with them' but they say can't help. Do you have any experience in repairing Leicas? Do you have the tools and a thorough understanding of Leica rangefinder mechanisms? If so, is your knowledge more than the repair shop that say they can't help? If so, why did you take it to a repair shop for an assessment of the fault? Why didn't you just get straight in and open up your M6? You've been given sound advice. I suggest you accept it.
jerzy Posted July 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 18, 2013 You may check the viewer lens (where you look through) if not broken. Can you notice anything of the secondary image? Unfortunately it looks like prism separation, something what only few shops can repair. look at Luton CRR in UK, on his web page he describes similar cases. TomB_tx Posted July 18, 2013 Share #5 Posted July 18, 2013 Leica rangefinders are certainly "specialist" items, but while the Leica factory would do great work, an M6 is long out of warranty, so I would choose one of the Leica specialists instead as the work would be cheaper. If you are in the US, want the best work, and don't mind a wait, Don Goldberg (DAG Camera Repair) is as good as they get. I've also had fine work done my Youxin Ye (YYe Camera) who is generally faster and lower priced. If you are in another world area, I'm sure others will recommend someone more local to you. mikebidwell Posted July 19, 2013 Share #6 Posted July 19, 2013 Hi Neil, welcome to the forum Nothing worse when you've got a decent camera like the M6 and it needs repair. However the best thing I think you can do is to heed the advice given to you by others on this site and get it back to Leica CS in Solms. At least if they effect a repair for you it will come back with a 12 month warranty. Obviously the choice is yours but I certainly wouldn't advise having a go at it yourself. Best wishes Mike

louster Posted July 20, 2013 Share #8 Posted July 20, 2013 I'd like to again mention Youxin Ye in Cambridge. I've sent all my Leica gear to him for CLA over the last 2-3 years. M6's and M3's. He replaced the rangefinder mechanism in one of the M3's and it is truly a joy use now. There's a nice story about how he became interested in Leica.
