Paul J Posted June 20, 2013 Share #4 Posted June 20, 2013 When i read the subject line I thought it might be something along the lines of a picture of the only Leica M's in existence (30 of them ) at the factory whilst having their lugs repaired. Nick De Marco Posted June 20, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted June 20, 2013 I realised today that I forgot to include my Hasselblad XPAN, which is a shame. But which is the best of rangefinders I left out for you Luigi?
farnz Posted June 20, 2013 Share #6 Posted June 20, 2013 The Zeiss Contax is notable by its absence, Nick, considering your love of the Sonnar. An impressive set and it seems that your IIIf from Copenhagen has been busily breeding Barnacks. Pete.

Lindolfi Posted June 21, 2013 Share #10 Posted June 21, 2013 In that case the Horseman 980 should also be included with separate composition finder and rangefinder And the Linhof Technika 4x5 with rangefinder

wlaidlaw Posted June 21, 2013 Share #12 Posted June 21, 2013 Agree with Pete - WOT?? No Contax?? You can always tell a Contax user from the callus on their right index finger from endlessly twiddling the rather abrasive focus wheel backwards and forwards. That was a nice idea but it is not very well implemented. I am almost frightened to use my Contax IIA Colour Dial nowadays in case the very complicated shutter stops working, even though I had it serviced about 5 years ago. There is now nobody on this side of the Atlantic who can repair or service these shutters and my experience of the main service man on the other side of the Atlantic was not a happy one. He abuses his unique position as pretty much the last port of call for Contax RF service, by being incredibly rude and unpleasant to his customers and doing work he was not asked to. pico Posted June 21, 2013 Share #13 Posted June 21, 2013 Not a Contax, but made by the same man. Combat Graphic Camera (KE-4 Still Picture Camera) Once Hubert Nerwin came to work for Graflex in the US under a military contract, one of the first assignments that he received was to produce a non-bellows, large format camera for combat use. The result was this Contax like 70 mm film format creation that had interchangeable lenses and a viewfinder that adjusted for the Telephoto lens. About 1,500 of these cameras were made but the construction was not as easy in the US with the significantly diminished precision manufacturing skills of the day. The normal lens was a 4 Inch F2.8 Ektar. The wide angle was 2.5 inch F 4.5 Ektar and the telephoto was an 8 inch F4 Ektar. You can compare the camera to the Contax IIa above and notice that there was no longer a need for the octagonal shape and so Hubert rounded the edges instead. wlaidlaw Posted June 21, 2013 Share #14 Posted June 21, 2013 Pico, I have always lusted after a Combat Graphic (The Texas Leica). Ed at Collectible Cameras in Scottsdale, AZ, has been on the look out for one for me for years. Not sure how you would get the 70mm film developed. jaques Posted June 21, 2013 Share #15 Posted June 21, 2013 that Linhof really is stunning- what an awesome RF camera!!... I have an unusual Horsman rangefinder - similar but not as beautiful (980?) with 3 dedicated (with cams) Topcor lenses- all in an amazing case. I was told once it was a special order set for Japanese field Forensics... 6 x 9cm. It is fitted with a Linhof Grip. It is about time I looked into a digital back for it... : Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted June 21, 2013 Share #16 Posted June 21, 2013 Well... in that sizing (and when I loved MF) I was often tempted by the Fuji 690... when I handled one, I was particualrly delighted that (not surprisingly) it was a "dual stroke" à la M3... pico Posted June 21, 2013 Share #17 Posted June 21, 2013 Pico, I have always lusted after a Combat Graphic (The Texas Leica). Ed at Collectible Cameras in Scottsdale, AZ, has been on the look out for one for me for years. Not sure how you would get the 70mm film developed. Wilson I had the whole kit in almost new condition (in serial number 7 case). I sold it and bought two new M7 bodies, two Abrahamsson Rapid Winders and hand grips, another 35mm pre-asph, and had enough left for a modest vacation for my mate and myself. If you find one, have it tested because people would wind the camera up and fire a ten-shot string without film. The military instructions specifically warn not to do that because it can (and often does) wreck the shutter. Where to develop? This is a company in Florida that does 70mm and all aerial films. He is absolutely competent and reasonable in pricing. I have not looked into European companies. That said, I had equipment to process long roll 70mm. Got it from a pile of discarded motion picture gear. Maybe you could find the same.
Nick De Marco Posted June 22, 2013 Author Share #18 Posted June 22, 2013 Thank you for adding some lovely photos of cameras I have not included or do not have. But you are feeding my lust. Especially with the Technica camera. I really want that now! As for Contax, I do have a couple, but they are living in my house in Italy, along with a dozen Russian and Chinese Leica copies and a few canons and other things. The reason is I have problems getting the Contaxs to work smoothly (and the Kiev copies even worse). Either the focusing, shutter or film advance was just too stiff. I found the Nikon S to be better as an old camera which still works, and my collection in this photos is of my working, user cameras.

Nick, I was very lucky to have had my Contax IIA serviced by a retired Zeiss USA technician just before he stopped all together some five years ago. He made a brilliant job of it and the film advance, focus and shutter all work perfectly and smoothly now. Even the little infinity lock button linkage works nicely from the focus wheel. However, unlike my old Leicas, which I will probably be able to get repaired long enough to see me out, if anything goes wrong with my Contax now, I suspect that is it. There is I am told, someone in the Ukraine who will repair them but he has a tendency to use Kiev parts, whose metallurgy or dimensions may not be exact.
