Lower Manhattan Triptych

Knowing I'd be back in Manhattan this week, I was back and forth on whether to bring the X-Vario, specifically to work at getting some architectural studies of this area around the 9/11 Memorial.  I find architectural photography a to be bit daunting regardless of the gear I might bring along.  Having visited the area around the Memorial before, I've come away with a couple of satisfying images, but I found it difficult to isolate any one building given the density of the area.

The challenge I set was to evoke some visual narrative using the buildings, but in conjunction with available forms, their convergence and of course the light!  I should also mention that I was inspired this way after stumbling on David English's Blog featuring his work with the X Vario (a very nice read :)

The images that suited me for this turned out to be ones made at the 18mm focal length. I'd considered packing the Monochrom and the 21mm SEM but wanted to see whether I could stay within the confines of "28mm" at the wider end, and also to work in monochrome with the XV.

I like the tones in the second one. It must be a challenge to separate the various structures in such a place if that was what you wanted to do.

Thank you Farhiz. It really is a challenge to isolate, especially Calatrava's Transit Hub. If I was to isolate or separate a particular building, I feel like the image would be more a referencial photo than one doing justice to that building (at least in the case of the hub). I know that I have a picture I made of my son in front of the tower taken with 21mm lens where I believe I was able to capture him and the building without others in the photo...tough to do.

Also, while the buildings stand alone (no pun intended) they were designed as site-specific in the sense of complimenting one another and the site as a whole.....if that makes sense. These images were made in that spirit :)

Merci Guytou :),  and thank you James!

Also, the first image with Leaves  was problematic because I fumbled and chose a User Profile that only provided me a JPEG. I didn't catch that until I got home. It was difficult (using Laptop here) to get the highs and overall tones where I wanted them. I'm going to re-do that one when I get home to my larger monitor.
