Yes I agree with you Henry, absence of flare is usually good. But there are different kinds of flare. I believe the flare Puts discusses is the one that appears when the sun or light source comes from an oblique angle which can cause a loss of contrast. The Summilux also performs well in such situations, but perhaps not as well as the new Summarit. I would, however, be surprised if the Summarit doesn't flare with the sun in the frame as in the picture I showed.

As I see it, the Summarit range of lenses is not a 'challenger' to the Summilux range. But they do provide serious food for thought for anyone contemplating the Summicrons. The about half extra stop of the 35 Summicron effectively costs 1000 Euro if one buys new, and even more if one is happy with the "old" f2.5 Summarit, which really is a modern/current design since it was issued in 2007.

Certainly the same comparison can be made for the Summilux vs Summicron but I have a feeling the Summarit-Summicron comparison is more relevant due to the price. Then again the 35mm CV Skopar is fantastic performer and an absolute steal for the money.

Harold thank you , I do not know this EP article on Summarit :)
Effectively it is a new optical line allowing Leica to produce more but keeps the legendary

quality of Leica optics. Furthermore it is almost half the price.
For 35 Summarit I notice that the flare is almost absent , what is good isn't Philip :)

Philip, Summarit is made by Cosina *  Japan for glass as Voigtländer

The price of Summarit is almost half price in France versus Summicron or Summilux

respectively a Summarit 35 costs 1550 Euros, a Summicron 35 Asph 2450 Euros in black

and the Summilux 35 Asph FLE 4200 Euros.

... a lot of money :)

Henry, I'm sorry but, unless I have misunderstood what you write, I believe your statement, that the Summarit lenses are made by Cosina, is incorrect.

All Leica M lenses are made in Germany by Leica, for instance see this press release regarding the new f/2.4 Summarits.

I shot with the new 28mm Elmarit-M Asph (with the metal hood) at photokina on Saturday and saw a humble "made in Germany" stamp on the body.

In any event, the Summarits are great lenses. Back to the photos.

One thing I think most fail to consider when looking to gain the "finest detail/sharpness" is whether the individual truly has the proper technique and technical ability to draw out that detail to justify the added cost.  Spending 8k on the 50APO is not a wise choice if you have a shaky hand from the result of poor technique.

Hey Philip - Sounds like you had a blast.  And that Fuji underwater disposable camera sounds like a ball of fun (do they come packed with Velvia 50? :) ).  Thanks for sharing that.

You make some great points, and all are valid in my mind.  And I agree that the cost-benefit is certainly subjective and there are people out there who may feel that the benefit outweighs the cost.  It is just that once you get up into the stratosphere of $8K for a single 35mm lens (referring tot he 50mm APO), you start to get into the budget of some really seller MF and LF optics and gear, which has lots more surface area and therefore potential for more than satisfactory resolution.  Still, a reasonable person might feel that they don't want MF/LF.  I wouldn't think they'd be totally crazy.
