If I want LF, use LF. I can do that. But there is some fun in trying to make the smaller and cheaper be so close to the larger and more expensive that it's "as near as makes no difference". No? The closest I got was using staining developers (Moersch Tanol and Finol). I stopped however as the results were not consistent, the colour of the stain seemed to change, and that messed up the printing process … but I can see your point 😁

Grain or not (and grain doesn't bother me at all), the problem -- as i mentioned earlier -- is that 35mm film cannot replicate the more nuanced tonality of a larger format. Case(s) in point: Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! These were all taken with a Mamiya RZ67. Even with these web-sized images, the difference is apparent. Still, I have abandoned MF for the versatility of 35mm. —Peter. chrism Posted November 4, 2021 Share #78235 Posted November 4, 2021 I wasn't being serious in suggesting 35mm can look the same as medium format; I was just rather pleased that I had made one of those photos—the ones that keep you engaged in the whole business. But it's nice to know I'm not the only one capable of concrete thinking. 😀 I see Flickr (their algorithm for this is way beyond me, with its striking predilection for birds and unrealistic HDR) has stuck it on 'Explore' today. As for pushing Plus-X, you know by now I am no fan of grain, and Diafine certainly enjoys no reputation as a fine-grain developer. Diafine generally suggests exposing a film 2 stops faster than box speed, although you quickly realise when using it that this will give gritty, contrasty results. Tri-X at 1600 in Diafine - not for me! I find being more conservative about the speed gives me negatives that suit me better, by which I mean they don't look like classic Diafine negatives! So Tri-X at 1000 for me, HP5 at 640, FP4 at 200, Pan F at 80 and so on. (An aside, I do wonder whether Ilford films contain less silver than Kodak's, both explaining cheaper prices and smaller speed gains in Diafine? It would fit with the general tendency for fast films to have the larger speed gains in Diafine, whilst slow films with less silver get less or no speed gain.) Plus-X 125 is a film that somehow withstands Diafine very, very well (maybe it had lots of silver, was expensive to make, and had to go?) I can expose it at 400 and develop it that way and get results that are smoother and more pleasing to me than rating it at 125 and developing in D-76, HC-110 etc. I'm not here to proselytize for Diafine, and I'd be too late if I were as it seems to be near-impossible to buy. It is seen as a lazy way to develop, giving generally bad results to people who can't be bothered to do it properly. I'm convinced it can give excellent results if you use it wisely. That means knowing what EI to use for your film, not worrying overmuch about temperature and time whilst not blatantly ignoring them, and getting the agitation right. It's wildly sensitive to vigorous agitation. Continuous uniform agitation makes it purr, but get a bit rough and it will scratch and bite and give you lots of grain. 4
