HighlandLeica Posted September 18, 2017 Share #40101 Posted September 18, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) As the pictures above attest, film is certainly the very best. (There you go - I must be a poet, even though I didn't know it!). Anyway, this is one of those photos (we all have ones like it I think) that, when I took it, I thought "YES!" because I envisaged I'd got a number of elements to work together harmoniously - the lovely light filtering back into the Egyptian café, the classical columns and the funky design on the floor, the ramshackle chairs and tables, then, fortuitously, the waiter walking into the picture. At f2 and 1/15th second I knew he'd be slightly blurred and out-of-focus, and I hoped I'd got him in a good spot and that the rest of the picture would be reasonably sharp, and that he and the other shapes would work together harmoniously in a black and white picture. So often those moments that are "YES!" when we take them turn out to be real fizzers when we come to look at them on the proof sheet, but I was really pleased with this one. In fact I'm still really pleased with it: Café, Alexandria, Egypt 1987 Canon F1, FDn 35mm f2, Ilford FP4 Fab shot!

stray cat Posted September 19, 2017 Share #40105 Posted September 19, 2017 img878.JPG Xpan, 4.5/4, Berrger Pancro 400 Again, Wayne, thoughtful and dynamic use of the panorama. I'd encourage you to really use it a lot and see where it takes you. Have you seen Josef Koudelka's book "Chaos"? It's his book of panoramas and is a revelation in the use of the long format - highly recommended if you want to see how a truly great master uses it: http://pro.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&ALID=2TYRYD1KSV9X

A miller Posted September 19, 2017 Share #40108 Posted September 19, 2017 Thanks, Phil This is one of the nicest pictures I've seen of the Amsterdam canals - it has human interest, is (relatively) uncluttered and has the barge coming through, with beautiful subdued colours. Lovely. Forgot to mention this one Adam - the classic "orange and teal" complementary colours giving a powerful contrast of hue. This is a striking landscape photograph - I think Eliot Porter would have been proud to sign his name to this one. Very good, John. Chicago, right? From the lowest point on earth, right before that old couple that I mentioned a while back shooed me off after I declined to take a photo of them b/c I didn't have any time b/c I left my cell phone in my car! With the Hassy SWC at Dawn. Here's the Ektar compare ektar.jpg For this particular shot I prefer Ektar for the slight magenta cast in the foreground, where Provia surprisingly looks rather cyan. Both are really excellent, just minor rendering differences.
stray cat Posted September 19, 2017 Share #40114 Posted September 19, 2017 Provia just has more of everything in this particular scene. But I'm not about to abandon Ektar here - I think it's likely more accurate to a soft, quiet and peaceful dawn. So Kodak gets my vote - just!
johnwolf Posted September 19, 2017 Share #40115 Posted September 19, 2017 Thanks, Phil Very good, John. Chicago, right? Yes, Chicago's wonderful Crown Fountain. BTW, I entered the wrong camera info. It's actually shot with an Olympus XA2. By the time I remembered, the change period had expired. John
Sparkassenkunde Posted September 19, 2017 Share #40116 Posted September 19, 2017 Ektar for me in this comparison. The overall ambience in the Provia shot to me has a bit to much of cyan, esp. in the water in the front. Also I like the stronger accentuation due to the slightly higher contrasts in the Ektar shot. Both are very pleasing, nonetheless
