Leica will probably sell more of these than they do Ms. And with fewer after-care and warranty costs too.

If you are in a business to make money, isn't that an attractive proposition?

Yes it is, and I hope it sells well.

Not difficult to outsell the M240 when they are shipping next to none. I've already heard from a few dealers that they are receiving X Vario cameras today.

UK dealers have stock today.

And Leica will sell more of these than M240s, even if M240s were not currently in constrained supply.

The lens does have a filter thread but so far I cannot find any mention of the thread size; the lens hood screws into the filter thread. If I bought the camera I'd like to use it with c/u lenses to improve on the 30cm minimum focus distance. Given that Elpro R lenses work very well with the X1 and X2 it should be possible to use them with the X Vario camera too.

EDIT ... According to Robert White's video the X Vario has a 43mm filter thread ... which could make for difficulties when trying to adapt and use a Series VI (44mm) Elpro R achromatic supplementary close up lens because TTBOMK there are no 44mm to 43mm step rings available anywhere.

Has anyone REAL numbers made by X1 and X2 ? I think that this is the only figure that can be significant to guess if this camera will or not be succesful

I don't imagine too many people outside of Leica can answer that question. However, if the X2 weren't selling reasonably then I doubt that Leica would have designed a zoom version.

Interesting and will hopefully sell well to the general public. (That sounds disrespectful but hopefully you know what I mean.)

For me I'm relieved in a way because it doesn't tempt me in the slightest to part with my Sony RX1.

...The 90 is really difficult to focus accurately wide open. The 135 APO Telyt is virtually impossible to focus with the M9 at anything but infinity, stopped down in bright light. On the other hand, these lenses can be focused very accurately with the EVF on the Olympus OMD, much more so than with the M9 itself!

The real innovation would have been a compact M-Mount body with integrated EVF focus peaking.

100% agree with every word. Obviously you will be called a troll , get ready...

I own both 90 APO and 135 Telyt and they are great lenses... on my NEX.

What's the point Leica to make incredible glass if there is no camera to put it on?

Don't tell me new M with a sorry a$$ version of focus peaking...

for those who wanted a 'cheap' M-mount camera....buy an M8. still a big sensor even compared to these, and one hell of a camera for MUCH cheaper than this miserable little camera.

And how long will it last? If I am not mistaken there are no spare parts for OOW M8's

Whilst its not by any means, a camera that I'm a fan of,in fact I think it was another opportunity missed, you could buy an Canon EOS M with the 18-55 lens, which whilst still slow is faster than this Leica equivalent, but has the advantage of having an image stabiliser, and has a full range of interchangeable lenses, and all the shooting modes and more that nobody wants, all for £400 on Amazon. The Chinese might not want to buy Japanese cameras, but at five times the price ?

Indeed the pictures they uploaded together with the review show the biggest problem of this model: that is the combination of a very slow lens (at least at the normal to tele end) and the absence of any type of image stabilization.

Looking at the portrait, you can see that even in somewhat good light you need to push ISO at very high levels (1600 in the case of this shot) to have a shutting speed that could be acceptable, thus compromising the image quality in respect to other faster solutions.

I think that an Oly E-P5 plus the Panasonic 14-35 f:2,8 set (a combination of roughly the same weight and dimensions) has lot of advantages in this case.

This doesn't apply to the X2 for instance, that is clearly well in line with the rest of the competition in its segment.

I agree. The Oly E-P5 has the best image stabilisation currently available and with an adapter can use all the M lenses and it has a built in EVF. The micro four thirds sensor is smaller than the APS-C in the new Leica but it is a very good one.The Panasonic f2.8 lens is actually 12 to 35mm which with the crop factor of x2 gives a 35mm equivalent range of 24 to 70mm.

That said the new Leica probably has better ergonomics as well as the typical Leica build and body style.Perhaps if Leica could buy in some of the latest technology (they already do with the clip on EVF) and put it in a Leica body they could produce a really desirable camera that would more than justify the premium price.

It has AF and MF ... but according to Angela Nicholson the AF is slow

lol. so it's a slow manual focus lens that focuses slowly in autofocus? could this be ANY worse? Was it Leica's strategy to release the most archaic camera possible!?

Angela Nicholson writes positively about the camera's virtue's too. Your comment "the most archaic camera possible!" is not justified.

Does LcT's quoting of Sean's AF performance figures to make it justified?

of course it is justified. it's called an "opinion".

Leica is getting savaged today on their official facebook page. The negative comments are running well over 90%. Below is one comment from a Mr. Reginald Claridades of Rochester, NY.

"Great to see Leica release this camera AND have it be in stock at Leica Boutiques and retailers...especially when the M240 that I pre-ordered in September 2012 is probably still a mess of parts that have yet to be put together. Get your enormous head out of your ass and fill the orders for your existing cameras before taking a fresh dump on your customers with this slow aperture, zoom lens camera. The Sony RX1 or Fuji X100s look like MUCH better alternatives. I have waited several years to upgrade my M8 and now I am getting thoroughly impatient waiting for my M240. Thanks for bringing the snotty self-entitled American out of me Leica. Fail."

Interesting perspective.

This new camera production must be quite an expensive investment for BlackStone, I mean Leica.

If they had invested that money into producing more M240s, maybe I would have an M by now?

I wonder what the real opportunity costs are for them?

It would be nice, in addition to m4/3 and APS-C cameras to also have an FF camera by a different manufacturer,

that I could use my M and R lenses on without modification.

Oh well, hopefully that happens soon.
