iforum Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1301 Posted June 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Judging by the number of people who kept their Digilux 2 neither Panasonic nor Leica are interested in improving the camera . A smaller version would become a keeper and close to a ideal camera .............there would be a lack of urgency to live in the world of GAS
Advertisement Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Hi iforum, Take a look here Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Anthony Flores Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1302 Posted June 6, 2013 Leica has provided a brilliant marketing campaign...for the Sony RX1 Totally. I had been on the fence about the RX1 waiting for Leica's announcement, and I'll still wait until the 11th just to see... but it's looking like the RX1 for me now. Just hate that big ugly EVF
Anthony Flores Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1303 Posted June 6, 2013 Except Leica... They did on the Digilux 2 and this seems to be the flawed successor to it. What's insane is that Leica could just release a thinner version of this body, with literally no other cosmetic changes, and if it was FF and took M lenses, it would be a home run. In trying to protect their legacy M business, which they are not even good at fulfilling orders for, they are letting Sony and Fuji make them look like dinosaurs. douglasf13 Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1305 Posted June 6, 2013 Totally. I had been on the fence about the RX1 waiting for Leica's announcement, and I'll still wait until the 11th just to see... but it's looking like the RX1 for me now. Just hate that big ugly EVF I actually returned my EVF for the RX1, because my Voigtlander OVF works so well with the camera...and it looks great. You might be surprised how accurate you can be with the center point AF and OVF. I'm using the OVF the majority of the time, with occasional LCD use, so the EVF was returned. TW528 Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1306 Posted June 6, 2013 I really think this is the Digilux 2 replacement as far as Leica is concerned. They left off the best bits though and with a slow lens and lack of EVF I don't think many Digilux 2 owners will buy it. Sadly, I can see them using poor sales as an excuse not to ever pursue this again. "See, we made a replacement for the Digilux 2 and none of you bought it!" lct Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1307 Posted June 6, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Compared to the Digilux 2, the slow lens of the X Vario is not that a problem due to the shallower DoF of APS and the vast superiority of current cameras in handling digital noise. TW528 Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1308 Posted June 6, 2013 Just noticed there is no aperture ring on the lens. It's a dial on the body like on the X2.
lct Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1309 Posted June 6, 2013 Yes another X with a zoom lens.
Lee Martin Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1310 Posted June 6, 2013 I actually returned my EVF for the RX1, because my Voigtlander OVF works so well with the camera...and it looks great. You might be surprised how accurate you can be with the center point AF and OVF. I'm using the OVF the majority of the time, with occasional LCD use, so the EVF was returned. I imagine Sony must be delighted with RX1 sales, and the fantastic press that it's had. It think it was considered over priced at launch, but it's sold well I believe, so they can justify that pricing. I believe it should have been supplied with the optical viewfinder included as standard, as should the lens hood, with the option of paying for the EVF if you wanted it, or even vice versa, and I think they would have sold even more, as I think some people felt that they were being ripped off, certainly with the hood. If the leaked spec is correct, then Leica will be made to look years behind by Sony and Fuji, and considering the big discounts by Fuji currently, they will have updates just around the corner for the X Pro 1 and XE1 , to move technically further ahead again,,and the next Sony's will be full frame with interchangable lenses I'm almost certain. I'd buy an RX1 if the optical viewfinder was included, better still built in, but it's just a matter of principle. That said, if the Mini M turns out to be a Monochrom with a built in viewfinder, and prime 35 mm lens I'll happily eat my shorts and get one !! TW528 Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1312 Posted June 6, 2013 Yes another X with a zoom lens. So I guess they were calling it a mini M based solely on the top plate resembling that of an M camera. I wonder if the X3 will use the same body but with a fast non-retractable prime? Don't think they can fit the larger LCD on the current body.

I wouldn't bother with the expensive Zeiss viewfinder for the RX1, either way. The Voigtlander 35 OVF is smaller and only a couple of hundred bucks, and, since it doesn't add size to the entire top plate like a built-in viewfinder would, the camera remains packable. HV25 Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1314 Posted June 6, 2013 Not sure its giving me a good feeling that the company that can't deliver the M I ordered brings out a Mini M which turns out to be such a disappointment judged by the leaked info. If Sony would have launched this Mini M we would all laugh and nobody would buy it. But they haven't - they have done better than that. Sad day for the red dot
lct Posted June 6, 2013 Share #1315 Posted June 6, 2013 So I guess they were calling it a mini M based solely on the top plate resembling that of an M camera... Or they decided to call "M" any mirrorless camera... Sounds like the "Mini M" is called officially X Vario though. Welcome, dear visitor! Sad day for the red dot I wouldn't buy either as i prefer interchangeable lenses but comparing a FF cam with prime to an APS one with zoom is somewhat questionable IMHO. Different beasts, dfferent customers. The X Vario is a Digilux 2 on steroids sort of.

Different beasts, dfferent customers. The X Vario is a Digilux 2 on steroids sort of. I'm pretty sure that Leica would sell more RX1s labelled "Leica" for $2800 than they would X Varios for $3200 (assuming the rumors are true,) which I think is the point. Heck, they might sell more Leica labelled RX1s for $4200 then they would the X Vario for $3200. The only way I see this rumored camera being interesting is if the fixed zoom collapses flat into the body. I still wouldn't spend $3200 on it, but it would make a little more sense. Different beasts, dfferent customers. The X Vario is a Digilux 2 on steroids sort of. In his defense, he was comparing the camera he and so many others wanted [a full frame compact with fixed or interchangeable, seems many would have loved either].... with the aps zoom camera we're likely to be getting. Well, I shouldn't say "getting" as it seems almost no one here will actually be buying it.
Anthony Flores Posted June 7, 2013 Share #1319 Posted June 7, 2013 What's interesting now is that even if Leica somehow miraculously surprises everyone with the "dream" M mini that has FF, IC, built in EVF, small sexy body with Jonathan Ive like design, etc..... I would still say this marketing campaign and the leaks have been a total fail, if purely for all the negativity that's been generated. They sometimes say any publicity is good publicity, but read through the forum comments here and elsewhere and you see a lot of pissed off people not happy with Leica. Calling Leica a "joke"... dinosaur... "behind"... "jewelry"... while praising Sony and Fuji CANNOT be good for their brand. Sure, a new camera, assuming it's what people want, could change a lot of that. But it's not always so easy to reverse ill will. Lesson... if you're going to use a "teaser" campaign for a product launch to build suspense and anticipation, you better damn well sure it's what people badly want and will make them happy at release. Otherwise, it's better to just shut up and talk about it when you release it.

Thanks for the tip, I assume you mean this one... Amazon.com: Voigtlander Metal Brightline Viewfinder for the 35mm Lens, Black.: Camera & Photo I might do that since it's not as bulky or ugly. Will miss manual focus sometimes but for that I can just use the screen.
