The RX1 lens appears better than it is because it is fully integrated in the camera, both optically and electronically. The firmware is geared towards this one lens making all corrections more precise, the sensor and lens are designed as one unit, allowing an optimal compensation of aberrations. The end result is a very good image quality, but it makes the discussion whether this is a "better" lens somewhat difficult, if not impossible and certainly moot.

so how much better do you think a leica summicron would appear to be if implanted in the same way? i have a suspicion it would have to appear to be a heck of a lot better to change the perception that sony has raised the bar on an least one option out there.

That's an impossible question... Summicron is designed to be a removable lens for a certain mount and flange distance, and Sony has been designed as a fixed lens camera with a certain lens onto...and that's all... we are in the field of apples to oranges... Surely Leica could design a fine fixed lens FF camera with a 35 or 50 f2.... maybe not exactly the current Summicrons... but I doubt they will make such an item...

It seems to me the X1/X2 would make a better (not good, but better) comparison to the RX1, specifically when talking about Leica and Sony's ability to design lens integrated cameras. I agree with the sentiment that comparing removable lenses with integrated lens is difficult (except of course for experts/engineers) and is akin to comparing apples to oranges where it can be said both are fruits yet clearly distinct varieties with more dissimilar than similar properties.

A meaningless question because such a lens, even if the word Summicron were engraved on the barrel, would be of a different design.

ah! so the 24/2.8 asph elmarit on my x1 is an apples to oranges misrepresentation. i am disappointed in leica. all this time i have been telling myself that i had actually purchased that lens but just attached to a specific body and sensor.

and thanks for the eyeroll. haven't seen it in awhile.:)

Yes, if compared with the Elmarit-M 24 2,8 asph.... :)

Yes, it is a separate formula. The names of lenses with Leica generally indicate a lens speed, not a lens design.

This is a genuine bonafide true as ever leak.

When they said Mini they really did mean MINI.

News just in. The Mini M manual is quite tricky to read.
