IkarusJohn Posted May 30, 2013 Share #841 Posted May 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica is just now getting around to manufacturing the camera. They probably photographed it so long ago that the picture has faded. At that time, this was probably also a market killer
Advertisement Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Hi IkarusJohn, Take a look here Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
barjohn Posted May 30, 2013 Share #842 Posted May 30, 2013 Actually the image shown here is pretty clear and sharp in B&W: Some More Thoughts on the Leica X Vario Typ 107, Formerly Known as Mini M | THEME
Karl G Posted May 30, 2013 Share #843 Posted May 30, 2013 Well, looks like there will definitely be money to be saved avoiding the need/desire for the new type 107.
woorob Posted May 30, 2013 Share #844 Posted May 30, 2013 Completely agree. If that's the new camera I have no interest. But I'd buy an FF EVF with interchangeable lenses in a heartbeat.
rramesh Posted May 30, 2013 Share #845 Posted May 30, 2013 Actually I don't care if it is a fixed X3 or an interchangeable M mini. What I am curious to know is the electronics implementation in this camera. Focus peaking alone with an EVF will not cut it for a rangefinder-less camera. I suspect that this is an experiment to test electronics prior to incorporation in a better M Mount interchangeable lens camera.
Rick Posted May 30, 2013 Share #846 Posted May 30, 2013 Wow. Well, I guess the good news is, at least the M stays just this side of being relevant, barely. Optics. Photography is still dependent on the physics of good optics. I'm starting to feel like the film guys around here. You know, who cares about the world expanding around us, the M concept and the M optics can exist in a vacuum and always be good.
barjohn Posted May 30, 2013 Share #847 Posted May 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) If the AF is fast and ISO performance on par with the X2 it will sell because even though the lens is slow it has a flash built in for low light. It is a prestige P&S for those that want the prestige of the Leica name and don't want to mess with buying multiple lenses. If the AF is slow, nothing will save it except a few die hards that claim AF speed isn't important because everything they shoot never moves. Of course, if it doesn't move what do you need a zoom with such a limited range for? You can easily zoom those ranges with your feet.
algrove Posted May 30, 2013 Share #848 Posted May 30, 2013 If the report is close to correct, it is a nice setup as I have been using my M with R 28-90 a lot and find it very easy to work with. Add AF and it could be a winner just as I find the RX1 to be when quick focus shots are required.
Archiver Posted May 30, 2013 Share #849 Posted May 30, 2013 I seem to recall a number of people who wanted an X1 type camera, but with a zoom lens. Well, here it is folks. I hope you're happy.
adan Posted May 30, 2013 Share #850 Posted May 30, 2013 Without getting into the merits of the X Vario or whatever, as such, I think most of the uproar on this thread stems from the silly marketing idea that "They're ALL M's." If Leica had labelled the mystery box "The X Maxi" instead of "The M Mini", there would probably be a lot less disappointed expectations. Maybe it is the "liked on Facebook" culture that has persuaded Leica (or their marketing consultant) that a thread with 850 posts is a marketing coup - no matter what the 850 posts actually say. Me, I prefer the "underpromise and overdeliver" approach for impressing clients, rather than "overpromise and underdeliver."
AB007 Posted May 30, 2013 Share #851 Posted May 30, 2013 I doubt this is real Leica Mini M camera pictured ahead of June 11th launch
luigi bertolotti Posted May 30, 2013 Share #852 Posted May 30, 2013 abSurd? (I'm a retired mathematician. Please ignore me. But Luigi is on form to-night.) captain Posted May 30, 2013 Share #853 Posted May 30, 2013 I am already invested in M lenses and don't particularly want to exchange them. Many anticipate a fullframe SONY camera, while Ricoh have already demonstrated interest in the M mount GXR. The Fuji XPro has a 2.5mm AA filter over the front of the sensor, which means it doesn't play as nice with wider M lenses. Yes it's possible to use M lenses on ASPC but kind of a waste given that you're throwing away half the image circle. Are you sure? The unique design of the Fuji X Trans sensor is that it no longer requires an AA filter like its stablemate the X-E1. Im invested in m lenses just like yourself so looking for a digital option with an EVF. The X-E1 comes so close but for the poor focus confirmation and the edge smearing. I had hoped this new Leica would be it but the leaked photo suggests otherwise
Rick Posted May 30, 2013 Share #854 Posted May 30, 2013 Would the real M Mini step forward. I don't believe the photos. What reputable site has posted anything yet. Zoom lens? Leica? Nah. I'm retrenching and waiting for the 11th.

earleygallery Posted May 30, 2013 Share #857 Posted May 30, 2013 Would the real M Mini step forward. I don't believe the photos. What reputable site has posted anything yet. Zoom lens? Leica? Nah. I'm retrenching and waiting for the 11th. I refused to believe the leaked M8 images when they first appeared. After all, where was the flash pc socket? What was that awful cheap looking plastic 'door' on the side of the camera? If the Vario X is a fake, it's a bloody damn good one and it will have fooled me! Gerard Posted May 30, 2013 Share #858 Posted May 30, 2013 The teaser shot differs from the leak shot. If you look at the top deck on both there is a pronounced 45 degree bevel on the Leica image that seems missing on the leak shot. There also seems to be mic holes (?) in the bevel of the Leica shot that are placed elsewhere on the leak image. An early example perhaps? Or a sign of a fake? wattsy Posted May 30, 2013 Share #859 Posted May 30, 2013 The X Vario seems perfectly plausible to me. The market for P&S and compact cameras went 'zoom' back in the 1980s and the typical consumer isn't interested in F stops and lens speed. I'd imagine that many potential sales of the X cameras stalled when the customer realised that the camera has a fixed focal length and Leica are naturally responding to that by making a zoom version available. Leica will not get anywhere near the 1% market share by catering only to the likes of us. However, whether the leaked X Vario is the "Mini M" is another question. It probably is but it is perfectly possible that Leica have something more interesting (to us) kept more firmly up their sleeves and the X Vario is just a new product that will be announced on the same day. stunsworth Posted May 30, 2013 Share #860 Posted May 30, 2013 Small point, but I always think it's useful to remember that "I wouldn't buy that" isn't necessarily the same as "no one would buy that".
