Wow. RG Lewis in London came through for me. I called 11 days ago to inquire and now have one in my hands! I'm shocked.

You can get ANYTHING Leica produces fairly quickly if you are willing to do some persistent leg work ........ I got an M9 in a week when they were unobtainable .... Noctilux ditto, all by being industrious and dogged .... ;)

I got one yesterday - Hong Kong grey market, and in this case more expensive (rather than cheaper as is usually the case) than list price - about the same as the post 1 July list price which I probably would have ended up paying anyway (or so I console myself to believe!).

The waiting list in HK through authorised dealers is so long that they are no longer adding to the waiting list I was told, and I lost my place in the queue at Robert White in the UK when they changed hands and dropped Leica.

It might not be obvious, but quite a lot of these lenses are ending up here and in China through grey market channels.

A very quick test of the lens in the office of the dealer I bought from (my first chance to even handle this lens) reveals that contrast is higher at f/2 than my 50mm Summilux ASPH is at f/2 - or so it looks. Might be my imagination.

I love the small size of this lens. That, combined with rangefinder focusing, makes comparisons to the Otus an apples and oranges comparison. I had an Otus - it is outstanding - but it stayed on the shelf while my Leica went out and about with me and is now sold. I know I will get tremendous use out of this little APO50. The build and finish feel a slight step up too.

I just got an email alert from Amazon saying this lens is now available (via one of their resellers). The catch is that it is at the "new" price - $8250 (which is what I just had to pay on the grey market anyway). But for anyone looking, have a look at Amazon.

Nothing to do with luck if you ordered prior to the increase; that's policy.

I hope that's the case. I paid a deposit for mine at Red Dot six months ago and, in the light of the price rise, I was warned I will be charged whatever Leica's price to them will be, allowing for markup. That would be fair practice by RD, so I hope Leica remember their policy :o
