arthury Posted March 29, 2014 Share #241 Posted March 29, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Both the Zeiss Otus and the 50 APO cron are not available in terms of stock. Both are superbly crafted. I am struggling between them and I don't want to get both of them. Why do you think one is better than the other besides their sizes and prices? NightSun Posted March 29, 2014 Share #245 Posted March 29, 2014 Leica lenses perform best on Leica bodies. Zeiss ZM lenses perform best on ? bodies. Also on Leica bodies. This is particularly true for ZM Biogon lenses as this is one of the more demanding lens designs for digital sensors because of tilted rays towards the sensor edges. They provide sub-par results with quite some cameras which can accept M mount lenses (adapted), while they work well with Leica's microlens arrays. arthury Posted March 29, 2014 Share #246 Posted March 29, 2014 Leica lenses perform best on Leica bodies. Zeiss ZM lenses perform best on ? bodies. I was thinking more about engaging the Zeiss Otus on the Nikon D800E, which it was designed for. I know it is totally different platform. Comparing the MTF's, the Zeiss 55mm/1.4 Distagon Zf.2 looks more like the 75mm/2 APO Cron's MTF --- they are flat lines across the entire lens. Guest odeon Posted March 30, 2014 Share #248 Posted March 30, 2014 Leica lenses perform best on Leica bodies. Zeiss ZM lenses perform best on ? bodies. Which Zeiss lens? If you asked Zeiss's ZM line lenses, they must be well on Zeiss Ikon. Also you can use them on Leica M bodies. Zeiss other lines are compatible on their mount. Ted Lemon Posted April 3, 2014 Share #251 Posted April 3, 2014 Just picked up my APO50 from Red Dot in London. Ordered in Jan 2103. Looks like they are rolling off the production line. Don't know for sure if it was made in the new factory but has a slip inside the box with the new Wetzlar address and contact details.
erlingmm Posted April 3, 2014 Share #252 Posted April 3, 2014 Getting mine tomorrow, my dealer called me and offered one. From new production.

Don't know for sure if it was made in the new factory but has a slip inside the box with the new Wetzlar address and contact details. I believe I was 13th on the list at Red Dot. Hope the production line is moving fast. PS. Just checked the price of gold, which has fallen a bit. Any more and the APO50 (black paint) really would be worth it's weight in gold. Ted Lemon Posted April 4, 2014 Share #254 Posted April 4, 2014 I believe I was 13th on the list at Red Dot. Hope the production line is moving fast. I was 4th on the list when I last checked about 3 months ago. So an average rate of around 1 lens delivered per month???? Would assume as production picks up this waiting time will shorten. I put the lens on my MM for the journey home for some test shots - they were fine - but the feel/balance of this lens on the MM body is just fantastic. thighslapper Posted April 4, 2014 Share #255 Posted April 4, 2014 I believe I was 13th on the list at Red Dot. Hope the production line is moving fast. .... just talked to my dealer ....... Leica told them I should have mine by June at the latest ...... I am top of my dealers list and they are near the top of Leica's dealer allocation schedule.... Leica said 3 were delivered last month ...... I assume this means the UK's allocation and not the total output .... otherwise we will all be too old and infirm to use one by the time it arrives ....... from past experience the only position on a dealers list that gives you any clue as to when you will get a Leica product is 1st ....... because of the price and long lead times many 'orders' fail to be taken up when offered....... DMJ Posted April 5, 2014 Share #257 Posted April 5, 2014 How do i tell if the available 50mm Apo is the revised version or not? Thank you. If your are buying second hand then you don't know unless the current owner can show you the documentation of the 'repair' from Leica (as I had with mine). If you are buying new from a dealer then it will be new as there has been such a dearth of these lenses that dealer would have sold it a long time ago - people wanted them & no supply. Bill W Posted April 5, 2014 Share #258 Posted April 5, 2014 How do i tell if the available 50mm Apo is the revised version or not? Thank you. Keep in mind that not every existing 50 AA lens needed to be repaired. It will be interesting in the future as some of the older ones are sold and how the are listed. Would they be Original, Pure, Uncorked, Vintage....

I'd like to have a partially corked but unscrewed version. And, I'm talking about wine, of course so stay on topic! Jokes aside, has anyone gotten any new ones yet from your dealers lately? Any APO 50mm sighting on the shelves?

If you are buying new from a dealer then it will be new as there has been such a dearth of these lenses that dealer would have sold it a long time ago - people wanted them & no supply. You are missing an important point about buying second hand. What if someone has a new version made after production started again where there would NOT be documentation of repair work. And as Bill says there are also those cases where repair work by the original owner was NOT deemed necessary.
