M (240) freezes up and exposure issues

Thank god I'm not the only one facing this problem.

My M 240 froozed on me a couple of times yesterday. Took the battery out and it was ok.

Gave up on the LV and VF - after that no problem.

It's not a card problem - I'm sure of it.

For almost every shoot, at least once my M will freeze and the 2 or 3 exposures I've shot don't preview and don't write to the card. I turn camera off/on and it's back to normal; but after the reset, the ISO always resets to the base 200. Shot a job yesterday with portions at 1000 ISO. After the lockup it defaulted back to 200, before I noticed that my shots were 2 stops under exposed. Burst rate or having the advance set to C or S don't seem to change the occurance. Frustrating given the cost of the system.

I received my M240 yesterday. On image 47 I experienced a freeze this morning. Here is the information on camera status. I would ask the forum and moderators if it makes sense to have a sticky where we can post camera status and freeze symptoms to try to determine the causes and remedies... and perhaps forward to Leica for help in creating a firmware solution. I view this as a pretty big problem in any digital camera, let alone a $7,000 camera. I have taken tens of thousands of shots with an M9 and MM {and countless more with a Canon DSLR) and cannot remember more than a handful of lockups between those cameras. This really needs to be fixed.

I am experiencing occasional freeze ups and shots that are totally under or overexposed. This occurs at least once a day. The camera will freeze up and the shutter won't fire for 4-5 seconds, once I had to pull the battery to reset. The over exposures are also random. I havent been able to identify a pattern yet of what is causing this, I'll try to take notes of my settings. Is anyone else experiencing this?

My shutter was freezing up on me as well. The camera is back in Germany for repair. US technicians are still being trained. I understand that there are at least two other Ms with mine that have the same problem. I suggest you call Leica.

The lockups are definitely linked to Live View or EVFs. I never had any lockups until I started using LV and EVFs. No more lockups once I stopped using them......

90%+ of my lock-ups are EVF related. I very rarely use LV on the rear screen so probably would not know if that was causing lock ups. Initially this seemed ambient temperature related but on current FW, not.

Using the M with EVF & shooting quickly, I'd always get lockups requiring battery removal to reset the camera. Latest firmware has helped. Had a shoot outdoors 2 weeks back. 4 degrees below zero & 20 mph winds. M with EVF and 21 Biogon was outside slung over my shoulder for 4-hours and I had no lockups, but I was shooting slowly, no bursts. Love my M & lenses, but I gotta say, no other camera I've ever owned from any manufacturer at any price has ever locked up under any circumstance.

I had the same problem. I bought my M240 in July 2013 and the freeze up happened after the camera "warmed up," about 100 shots but sometimes sooner than that. I sent it to New Jersey in September 2013 and they sent it to Germany. I was told that the factory had three cameras with the same problem. Ultimately they did a firmware update which solved 90% of the problem. That is, my camera sometimes still freezes up, but not often, and I take the battery out to reboot. Leica is certainly aware of this problem.

Try this quick fix that I found recently, but I need all your help to prove this quick fix works for all freeze situations, so that I hope this could give Leica some hints to fix the issue in next firmware update. Here is the quick fix :

- when the M240 froze, I immediately pressed the video recording button for twice (the first time to activate recording, the second time to deactivate the recording). This "double-click" can be done in one second (if too fast, the camera will ignore one of the two pressings....you know Leica mechanics is slower than human actions, and the recording will continue). Then I could fire the shutter immediately. I found this method by myself recently and tried for at least 10 times. Most of the trials worked perfectly but happened once that the recording continued and ate up a big part of my card space.

Please help to prove this method works. The only downside is that you may need to playback to delete any unnecessary short videos created by the quick fix.

Look forward to seeing your test results soon.

Greatly appreciate your solution. I will try your "video-button-twice" solution as soon as I have another camera lockup. I use the MF grip with a tripod plate mounted, so when I have a lockup, I need to unscrew 2 attachments before I can even get at the battery and then remount both attachments. A real pain, especially with client staring me down!

Grrrrrrrrrrr I had a full-on battery out lockup last night, about a 1/3 of the way through a shoot. The lighting was particularly difficult, and it had taken ages to get it right. I know I should have chimped and checked, but I didn't think to - after the lockup the camera reset itself to the settings I had been using the previous day (200ISO, daylight) making everything I shot from then on worthless.

Two weeks ago I brought two M240 bodies with me to the Serengeti. Both were used extensively.

One of them had four lock ups, requiring battery removal.

The other had none.

The one with no problems was always used with EVF, the one with problems never.

I had a lockup this past weekend, while shooting dance (of course). Happened with the buffer full -- of course. (Am I the only guy who fills the buffer :) ? Wish this hadn't been problem for me since the M8 ....

M(240), new Sandisk 64gb extreme pro (formatted in camera before shoot), DNG compressed, auto ISO.

Went into the red-light-flashing mode. Had to pop the battery. OK after that, continuing with the same card.

Regards, Bill

The lockups are definitely linked to Live View or EVFs. I never had any lockups until I started using LV and EVFs. No more lockups once I stopped using them.

Correlation is not causation.

Spurious Correlations :)

More seriously, my M froze more often indeed when using LV or EVF, but it is not a precondition.

A full buffer also seems to "help" freezing, but it is not a precondition.

Don't open your camera, it's full of weird bugs in there :p

Update -

For the last few months I've been reformatting my SD card regularly, and the lockups have been reduced.

Then on Sunday I had the shoot from hell. I guess 80 lockups, 50 requiring battery removal, over a period of 4 hours. I even stopped for a while to reformat a card but it didn't help. Never has a £5000 camera come closer to being crushed by a hammer, and it made me look a complete fool.

Afterwards, completely at the end of my tether, I tried a full reformat, with "overwrite" - which took about 45 minutes. I then took 1000 pictures machine-gunning the opposite wall of my living room with no lockups. I took 2000 last night on a shoot with no lockup.

I obviously have to schedule a 45 minute SD card reformat before every shoot!

How did you do the Overwrite/Format?

I usually just Format in the camera...(never the via the computer)

I always reformat in-camera after downloading and then backing up my image-files to an external HD on my Mac.

From time-to-time I also us SDFormatter, suggested by Overgaard https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ It seems to help if I am beginning to have issues.

Last week, as I was finishing a shoot, went to look at my last image and the M240 screen said the card was unreadable. Panicked, I downloaded the files to my Mac without having any problems, reformatted the card and have had no other issues with the card since. Concerned, I threw the card away and purchased another 1 week later.

Love my M's, but "never" have any similar issues with my "cheap" Canon bodies :(

I always d/load into my iMacs (saving on 2 separate HD's) then Reformat the cards in the cameras..

SanDisk 16GB Extreme UHS-I U3 SDHC Memory Card (Class 10) caused my 240Safari to jump around in Replay..Most Strange.. It was as though the Info control was a sensitive touch button

Changed to another SanDisk all's good.. Going to try the original SanDisk in my XVario over the next few days, it could be a bad card!..

On the first firmware the use of an EVF or LV would trigger thermal protection lockups at high temperature. Typical Internet confusion has conflated this with all lockups.
