digitalfx Posted April 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am experiencing occasional freeze ups and shots that are totally under or overexposed. This occurs at least once a day. The camera will freeze up and the shutter won't fire for 4-5 seconds, once I had to pull the battery to reset. The over exposures are also random. I havent been able to identify a pattern yet of what is causing this, I'll try to take notes of my settings. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Advertisement Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Hi digitalfx, Take a look here M (240) freezes up and exposure issues. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
satijntje Posted April 8, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 8, 2013 Yes, I have experienced same problem, apx 1 out of 100 overexposed. John
chris_tribble Posted April 8, 2013 Share #3 Posted April 8, 2013 Never happened to me - but I tend not to do continuous shooting or anything fancy.... Still, the camera shouldn't freeze if it's being used with the functionality its design offers...
Ecar Posted April 8, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 8, 2013 I have experienced huge overexposure a couple of times. I think it happened when trying to take a shot immediately after waking up the camera from standby mode. But the vast majority of pictures taken under the same circumstances are OK. However, I don't recall the camera freezing - or if id did, it must have been for a short period of time, as I have never had to pull out the battery to do a reset. Strange...
deliciouspizza Posted April 8, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 8, 2013 Haven't had any exposure issues (that weren't my fault, at least) but I did have some freeze ups in my first few days with the camera, that required the battery to be pulled. But since the latest firmware update, it hasn't happened since. I had a big problem yesterday though. I was taking photos in a parade for about 5-10 minutes, took about 20-30 shots. The shutter was actuating every time, but I noticed the review wasn't coming up. I pressed play, no response. I turned off the camera and back on, all the photos from the last 5-10 minutes had not saved. It was pretty sad actually, I had taken some good pics. But it's not like it just dropped the files, I should have noticed the review not coming up sooner. I'm assuming the camera went into sleep mode but somehow the shutter was still functioning. So, be warned. It hasn't happened since. Thought I might start a thread about it.
jaapv Posted April 8, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) It may be a camera problem, it may be user error, but it may also be that you have a dud SD card. The last is easily checked by using another from a reputable reseller. Edited April 9, 2013 by jaapv
dante Posted April 9, 2013 Share #7 Posted April 9, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M8 did this too. There was a half second pause after wakeup where it just wasn't safe to use AE or flash. The flash thing was weirder. Dante
digitalfx Posted April 9, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted April 9, 2013 Im using a Sandisk Extreme Pro card. Overexposure has occurred at least 4-5 times for just one exposure, then remaining are fine. Freezes are random, usually requiring 10-20 second wait before proceeding...one time I had to pull batt. Ive shot roughly 800-900 images and the freeze up has occurred about 1 per
StephenPatterson Posted April 9, 2013 Share #9 Posted April 9, 2013 I've had two occasions where the M(240) fired off a frame approx. 4 stops underexposed. This was when waking, and the next frame was normally exposed with no changes.
Dannybuoy Posted April 9, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 9, 2013 It was pretty sad actually, I had taken some good pics You mean you think you did. Good subject matter but sadly you'll never know if the photos were actually any good :-)
markowich Posted April 9, 2013 Share #11 Posted April 9, 2013 Yes, I have experienced same problem, apx 1 out of 100 overexposed. John i have noticed that - when doing negative exposure compensation - and not being careful enough to avoid going below the minimal shutter time, then there is no warning from the camera and wild overexposure occurs. strange, should underexpose but.... peter
blueweed Posted April 12, 2013 Share #12 Posted April 12, 2013 no freezes for me but... coming from an RX1 and D4 and with the M being my first range finder I find getting the right exposure a great challenge. Its all fine during outdoors, but indoors I get all sorts of wonky results. Having said that...still love the rangefinder experience.
StephenPatterson Posted April 12, 2013 Share #13 Posted April 12, 2013 M(240) locked up on me twice yesterday, and both times I had to pull the battery out to reset. Not quite ready for prime time, which is why I had my Canon as a backup. I'm hoping every day for a firmware update.
k-hawinkler Posted April 12, 2013 Share #14 Posted April 12, 2013 One would think Leica learned their lesson with the M9 - but apparently they have not. Too bad.

That is probably due to being ubfamiliar with centreweighed metering. Leica did provide matrix metering in that case.
dwbell Posted April 12, 2013 Share #16 Posted April 12, 2013 One would think Leica learned their lesson with the M9 - but apparently they have not. Too bad. We can expect; - a complete lack of acknowledgment of the problem - a late but loudly trumpeted firmware update - a new problem introduced in this update that wasn't there previously - rinse repeat :p
jaapv Posted April 12, 2013 Share #17 Posted April 12, 2013 Ummm... According to LFI a firmware update for the lockup-discreet problem on the M9 is in the works - that doesn't tally with your post, even with smileys.
dwbell Posted April 12, 2013 Share #18 Posted April 12, 2013 Facetious fanboy bating Jaap, no harm intended. I'm glad they're going to fix the M9 finally!

According to LFI a firmware update for the lockup-discreet problem on the M9 is in the works - that doesn't tally with your post, even with smileys. Someone quoted some very reliable sources within Leica about the same approximately 8 months ago. Maybe next year. Leica is the slowest company I've ever encountered. jaapv Posted April 12, 2013 Share #20 Posted April 12, 2013 It is mentioned explicitely in the latest LFI. Who knows.... I think the holdup might be Jenoptik. That is a large company with mainly military interests. Leica might be rather low on their priority list.
