Advertisement Posted May 2, 2013 Posted May 2, 2013 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Leica M strap lugs unscrewing (merged). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wlaidlaw Posted May 2, 2013 Share #242 Posted May 2, 2013 I think it's much better value than the Leica R lens. I did wonder whether the Leica R lens bubble will collapse at some point. Mark, With the supply and demand for the 28-90, I suspect that prices may even climb. At around 10% of the price and pretty much the same quality as the Leica, from looking at the MTF's, vignetting and distortion figures, the Vario Sonnar is a bit of a no-brainer. I knew the quality of this lens from film days, so it was not a step into the dark for me. It is also para-focal when adjusted properly (mine seems to be), so it stays in focus as you zoom. I did not think I would like the "one touch" zoom/focus but having used both it and the two touch 80-200/f4 Vario Elmar, I think I am coming to prefer one touch. Salander Posted May 2, 2013 Author Share #243 Posted May 2, 2013 Took a trip to Leica USA yesterday to pick up my Leica M after the lug repairs. They also cleaned the sensor. Welcome, dear visitor! david perry Posted May 3, 2013 Share #246 Posted May 3, 2013 My M arrived in Germany yesterday and is currently 'in repair'. Tracking via DHL ensured that I knew exactly where the camera was in transit, and the same should be true on the return journey. Leica acknowledged receipt via email and today have kindly sent the following in an email service order message: "Thank you for doing without your camera during the precautionary check. We are working very hard to ensure that your camera is fixed as quickly as possible. fix carrying strap loop adjust range finder clean range finder adjustment of all parts cleaning and end control Please be advised that during the repair process personal settings/data could be changed or deleted. After receipt of your camera (equipment,) we recommend to check your personal settings." Focus was fine before going in, so I assume that the disassembly process necessitates the adjust and clean. I should get it back next week.

jaapv Posted May 3, 2013 Share #248 Posted May 3, 2013 Actually the adjust and clean lines are automatically included with each and every "Kostenvoranschlag" I've never seen one without them.

marknorton Posted May 4, 2013 Share #252 Posted May 4, 2013 Remember Salander was the one who first encountered the problem, they are saying their turnaround will be quicker now they are geared up to address the problem. We hope.

We hope. Based on the way Leica is shipping M's in the U.S....its 2 weeks of transit only. This doesnt even factor delays in NJ. I think a month is probably conservative considering Leica's history of "quick turn around". I dont think "quick" translates in German
jaapv Posted May 4, 2013 Share #254 Posted May 4, 2013 It does exist in the untranslated German, though. Cameras inside Germany seem to have a less than one week turnaround. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-zur-leica-m9/278839-instabile-gurthalterung-4.html#post2388609 It appears that the UPS/Customs alliance is spoiling the game once more. I called Leica NJ yesterday and they are shipping out the cameras in batches to Solms. I think on a weekly basis - perhaps on Tuesdays. This will add a bit to the wait.... marknorton Posted May 6, 2013 Share #256 Posted May 6, 2013 Interesting to note that Leica are bringing people over to Solms from Portugal to assist the Service Department in handling the recall and they claim this will not affect new M production. Makes you wonder what they would have been doing otherwise. I expect the kind people of Solms have laid in extra supplies of Sauerkraut for their visitors as a show of appreciation for the situation they find themselves in... This 'error' has happened before, which makes this latest fiasco all the more remarkable.

Mark, I guess they should have been making R to M adapters I just hope that they leave the guy who failed to dip the screws in Loctite, back in Portugal. The Sauerkraut should go nicely with sardines. Wilson

Yes, but it was Salander's experience with his M Typ 240 which lead to the recall, not individual examples of M8/9 cameras. This is what Leica say about it in the FAQ in answer to the question are other cameras affected: No, only the first Leica M (Typ 240) cameras are affected. Loose strap lugs in other camera models are individual cases. Doesn't make it any more acceptable though. It's a pity Leica did not see fit to revise the design for the M, especially putting a stainless steel insert inside to reduce wear and tear as Nikon do.
