foolli Posted March 25, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted March 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I noticed half an inch sctratch on my Monochrom LCD this afternoon. I am not sure how it was managed. The camera was never even close to any diamonds. The only possible cause is really the zip on my jacket... I thought the glass is harder than normal metal, so I didn't put any protector on. I really regret now. Although that doesn't do any damage to the photos, it made me unhappy. anyone with M9P or MM experienced this?

I don't think a regular zipper is enough to scratch sapphire, unless there was real force applied during contact....I've hit my tag heuer with sapphire crystal into a brick wall by accident before with no scratches....sapphire is normally VERY scratch resistant. my M8.1's sapphire screen is perfect after much rough usage. wattsy Posted March 25, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted March 25, 2013 Maybe Leica ran out of sapphire screens and substituted a plastic one when they made your camera? I second the comment to try wiping the scratch off.

I second the comment to try wiping the scratch off. Â It's not beyond the realm of possibility that a standard screen was fitted in error.....but it could be a mark rather than a scratch too. MarkP Posted March 25, 2013 Share #6 Â Posted March 25, 2013 A few days ago I could have sworn that my Monochrom sapphire screen was scratched. A good wipe with lens cleaner and a microfibre cloth mysteriously removed the 'scratch'.
foolli Posted March 25, 2013 Author Share #7 Â Posted March 25, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) i will definitely try to wipe it when I get home after the trip. thanks all. I may contact Leica if no success, and see what they say.
marknorton Posted March 25, 2013 Share #8 Â Posted March 25, 2013 Just to be sure you do have a sapphire screen, look along the lower edge in the centre. There is a tiny gem shape etched into the glass.
IWC Doppel Posted March 25, 2013 Share #9 Â Posted March 25, 2013 Yes I had never seen it before it's in the middle of the bottom edge

edwardkaraa Posted March 25, 2013 Share #11 Â Posted March 25, 2013 It is a misconception that sapphire cannot be scratched. Even diamonds can be scratched, and I know what I'm talking about because I'm a jeweler. It depends on how high the mineral is on Mohs scale.
Guest borge Posted March 26, 2013 Share #12 Â Posted March 26, 2013 Sapphire isn't scratch-free. Sapphire is much less prone to scratches. Â I have a watch that I have had for about ten years now and it has Sapphire glass. Yes it looks very fresh considering that I wear this watch 24/7 - no matter what I'm doing. But you can still see that the glass isn't new. It has a few tiny scratches. But if this was regular glass it would have been badly scratched and faded due to swirls from cloth, etc, etc.
tobey bilek Posted March 27, 2013 Share #13 Â Posted March 27, 2013 I liked the image on the saphire, dislike the greasy nose prints from using my left eye. They do not clean well. Â I put on a cell phone cover. My thumb wipes the grease, sort of.
photomeme Posted March 27, 2013 Share #14 Â Posted March 27, 2013 Thank goodness you have an MM not the M240, then. Â IIRC, Guerilla Glass in the M240 is a downgrade from the MM's Sapphire, much less scratch resistant.
jaques Posted March 28, 2013 Share #15 Â Posted March 28, 2013 this is why I popped a glass screen on my M9-P the day I got it. Also to protect against 'stabbing' injuries to the screen. The protector is only mounted at the edges and I think it will protect the screen from a possibly fatal stab attack sacrificing itself and distributing the force around the edge of the sapphire. I imagine (without knowing) that sapphire glass is actually more brittle than the plastic screens? Â I don't even notice the screen and it only cost $12. It has already absorbed a few hits. If I ever decide to sell the camera I know the screen will be absolutely perfect under there.
marknorton Posted March 28, 2013 Share #16 Â Posted March 28, 2013 that's not always there. i've seen some with and some without. Â I have 4 cameras with sapphire screens and they all have the symbol. The exception may be the original M8.2.

4X5B&W Posted March 28, 2013 Share #18 Â Posted March 28, 2013 My M8 does not have scratches to the glass, but does have scuff marks to the anti reflective coating. Â Can you have the same condition with a sapphire crystal ? Â Just wondering.
