Does the Vario elmar R 4/80-200mm lens focus beyond infinity when on the DMR? Or does my lens need adjustment? Thanks!

I am using my 80-200/4 lens with a Novoflex adapter on Sony NEXs.

Focus stops precisely at infinity.

I find that a very useful feature.

I would suggest to have your lens adjusted.

We have had a discussion on this forum before about thermal expansion of lenses.

I believe in the case of this lens a qualified technician could adjust the lens more precisely to infinity than I ever could focus manually, especially in available light situstions.

Good luck.

Although I don't have the 80-200, both my 180 f2.8 and 280 f4 focus beyond infinity. In Puts' article on them he states,

"The 180 mm f/2.8 Apo-Elmarit-R lens can be focused beyond

the infinity mark (as the 280 mm lens can as well). This is intentional

in order to accommodate heat expansion and it is not

designed for searching the best infinity position. There is

nothing beyond infinity and the true infinity mark is optically

and mechanically fixed by the factory."

If the barrel on your 80-200 turns beyond the infinity mark I guess its designed to compensate for temperature changes at the telephoto end of the zoom range as well. And, as Jaap suggests, it doesn't matter as you focus using the viewfinder screen, or using live view if your camera has that facility.

Hope this helps,

Graeme

Thats correct.

Both my 28-90 and the 80-200 focus beyond the infinity mark.

However early models of the 28-90 and the 80-200 didn't.

Both are wonderful lenses.

Ken.

I have this lens and it is one of my favourites, If it goes past infinity then the lens needs realigning but it is not essential, mine does it a tiny bit and has never bothered me at all.

I have 2 ROM copies of this lens and 3764xxx focuses to infinity and 3994 focuses past infinity by maybe 0.5mm. I have never used the 3994 yet. Many of my other R lenses focus past infinity and it never causes problems for me. Am I concerned? No.

Mine does , but no problem because I focus using the screen not the lens infinity scale. I understand this helps it cope with heat expansion/contraction.

Depends on the version of the lens. There are two versions available, non-ROM and ROM (serial number <37... and >37..., rsp.). Optically, they are identical. The ROM version focuses beyond infinity, the non-ROM doesn't. The camera has nothing to do with it.

I had both.

I have no idea whether it focusses beyond infinity or not by design, but on an SLR there is no reason to adjust it.

My:) earlier 80-200 f4. does but only at the long end 200mm. As you say, with an SLR you just use the screen.

Here’s what you can do with a DMR and 80-200/4 ROM. This is one of my early DMR shots, taken back in 2006 (using my original DMR serial no 100537 before it was stolen in a burglary!). Billy Joel taken from my seat 25 rows from the stage. No way can you do this with the M240.
