Thanks Michel, I particularly like the second one. The look on the man's face is priceless (I guess he's given his Visa card to his wife ;) )

David, the two Rotary musicians is a great photo. Love the atmosphere and their enthusiasm. Have you done something to make the background look glowing like that? Reminds me of the lovely blur of a Thambar 90 :)

cheers

Hi Philip,

Thanks !

On processing the RAW image I felt that the background was confusing and I needed to concentrate on the faces of the musicians. Confess that I had just bought Aperture 3 and used Adjustments-Quick Brushes-Blur tool to blur the background.

Regards,

David

Hi everyone

I've put together a very simple RAW ISO/EI test just to satisfy my own curiosity. Feel free to have a look and to give me suggestions for improvement.

Leica Digilux 2 RAW ISO comparison – Part One | philipus.com - articles

Hi Philip,

Many thanks for taking the time to scientifically experiment and share your results.

Intrigued by one of your previous statements, I had conducted a very crude similar test based on the minimum handheld speed (in this case 1/8 sec) and very low artificial light (a 9W energy-saving bulb).

With the LR3 raw engine, it seems that ISO400/EI400 gives more details in the shadows.

Do you confirm that? Did you also use LR3? Any better with an other engine?

Thanks again.

Cheers

Michel

Thanks Michel. I don't have LR but only used ACR so I'm not able to compare which software may give the best shadow detail. But looking at your photos it seems you've the same result as I got, that ISO100/EI400 gives a much darker image with less shadow detail. ISO400 RAW is lighter and would seem to cotain more detail in the shadows (see the conclusion page in my test).

For a fair comparison you shouldn't have taken the pictures with the same aperture and shutterspeed. When the iso goes plus 2 stops, from a 100 to 400 you must take your speed 2 stops shorter or your aperture 2 stops smaller.

Really ... ? :D

If you read the thread, you will understand that we are comparing ISO100/EI400 and ISO400/EI400, i.e. pushing by 2 stops the exposure in the ISO100 development process.

The photo on the right is the result obtained after pushing by 2 stops.

Just a quiet reminder. This thread was started with the intention of showing good examples of Digilux 2 imagery, and has run that way for years (with a record number of posts), staying with the original theme in an admirable way. Newcomers to this remarkable camera testify that they have spent hours going through the entire thread, and that it has helped them a lot with their decision.

So, when somebody feels the need for a purely technical discussion like the recent one, how about starting another thread for this purpose, and keep this one on its main track?

I´m sure it would be much appreciated.

Here´s my latest D2 shot, just to do as I preach....;)

Back on track of posting pictures.

( Promised, I'll not let me be carried away again by my technical enthusiasm about this camera. ;) )

Per, I certainly don't mind. The reason I posted the link to my test in this thread was that I wanted to let those who may have the most interest of the results know as easily as possible. It's fair to assume there are quite a few D2 photographers out there who have subscriptions to this thread. I will, however, post a new thread.

Michel, that is an excellent b/w photo. Very striking composition indeed.

Cheers

Philip (temporarily in Stockholm)

Our sun porch. 1/320 @ f2.4

Cirrus, a suggestion. Consider using bounce flash to relieve shadows in such an interior. I often use this technique which invariably helps. Needless to say, avoid reflections in the window by off-setting the axis.
