I  have recently completed a similar exercise which I wrote up for The Leica Fellowship here https://kendavis.photium.com/lucky-dip

I was astonished by what I found.

Wonderful images. Also, very cool resource that I wasn’t aware of. Will have to dig into some of those articles.

Regarding the recent (6th January) posts about batteries for the Digilux 2, I recently bought one from a UK-based company called All Batteries UK, base in Solihull in the West Midlands. They have a warehouse in France and these batteries are sent from there, takes about 10 days total. Mine was delivered today via Parcelforce; total cost is just under £23 but there is no extra to pay (ie customs costs etc), so what you see on the invoice is what you pay. It is charging up now, it does look very similar to one I previously got from France (via eBay or Amazon) but this is no longer possible. It's more expensive (of course!) buying it via a UK firm but it appears to be the only option.

I mention this here as it might help other UK-based owners needing a source of batteries.

(The Digilux 2 is now my only camera so I'm trying to keep it going for as long as possible!).

Sadly, out of stock.  But I have ordered a spare battery for my C typ 112.

Sorry to hear that, I only ordered on 28th January and it arrived today; hopefully, they will have more (they do seem to reply to emails quickly enough so it might be worth asking).

Following my post on February 5th regarding batteries for the Digilux 2, I had a follow-up email today from AllBatteries to check that all was OK with my order so I asked if they would be having more in stock. Quick reply a short while later to say they are expecting more stock on 16th June; they didn't say how many so if you need a battery or two for your Digilux it might be worth contacting them well in advance of that date in case they need to increase their stock!

  • 2 weeks later...

i just happened to find this thread yesterday "by accident" and i got thrilled by all those nice pictures. and then -later in bed while halfway asleep- it came to me, that there used to be a digilux 2 somewhere in the basement, where parts of my fathers cameracollection have found their parkingposition. i managed to get that thought aside and find some sleep. but today while sitting in the boring office, that thought came back to me and wouldnt leave me alone. so, later at five in the afternoon i found myself exploring the basement for a small silver box with a digilux 2 in it- and found it.

but as i remembered, the camera had problems with starting up. it would only start every second time i tried it. but soon i found, that one of the batteries was fully dead and the other was only good for driving the old digilux2 for not more than a few seconds. but the third one seemed to be full and working.

yet the camera kept freezing every few attempts of taking a picture.

after checking on everything visible on the outside of the camera, i found the sd-card in the slot was a 2GB of size.

i suppose, that this size of sd-cards wasnt really available, when the digilux2 was launched. on a short dive into the cupboard next to kitchendoor, i found a 256MB sd-card and replaced the storageunit.

that did a good change. the camera doesnt freeze that frequent any more.

a few attempts later it froze anyway, when i tried to fire the flash. so i let it sit for a couple of minutes with the battery installed. et voilà: the camera now fires the shutter with or without flash, it even replays the shots already made.

all i need to do now, is take her for a walk.

if only...

if only it wasnt for the storagecapacity. only 22 rawpics do match onto the 256mb card. that is quite a lot compared to my trustworthy rolleiflex, who only gives 12 exposures to a filmroll. but it is rather a few, given the fact, that we speak digital photography here with a -lets call it basic- display for checking pictures.

and my cupboard unfortunately only held one card of that size.

so here's my question: what size of sd-card do you use with the digilux 2? what is the biggest size, the digilux takes? maybe with this information, i can find a card of proper size somewhere.

Many of us don't shoot raw with the Digilux 2 because of the 6-7 seconds 'write to card' time and because its jpegs are exceptional as you've probably seen in this thread.  I only shoot raws for 'particularly special' pictures and use the write time to read a chapter or two of War and Peace. ^_^

I use a plain 2GB SD card (not SDHC, SDXC, or SDUC) and I think I'm right in saying that's the largest the D2 will take, but shooting primarily jpegs I've never felt short of space.

that means, that the 2gb card probably was not the actual problem.

i continued testing my d2 and it kept hanging up every now and then for no reason. sometimes, when switching to play mode, sometimes in the middle of focussing and sometimes it freezes just spontaneously for no reason at all.

is that a known Problem of the d2 - or is it just because it was off power for so long?

It's not something (fingers crossed!) that I've experienced with either of my D2's.  (Except when shooting raw as mentioned above.)

It might be worth using something like the (free) SD Formatter to format the 2Gb card (which as others have said is the maximum size the Digilux 2 will take). I imagine there will be a small internal battery that will hold all the settings made in the menu, so if the camera has not been used for a long time this might be an issue.

There's a long and useful article on the Digilux 2 on Thorsten Overgaard's website which is worth a read. The only other issue I'm aware of with this camera is that some were affected by a sensor problem (mine was one of them). Leica used to replace these free but that was many years ago, the parts are no longer available now.

funny enough, the camera stopped its funny behavior and now works as it is supposed to. no quirks. nothing. all i did was to remove any card and play around a little. it hasnt frozen once since 30 minutes now. so lets wait and see, if the problem has solved.
