For those of you that have not taken the time, I HIGHLY recommend you peruse Morgan's gallery from this trip. He has found a personal "zone" with his Digilux 2 that rivals the very best in traditional rangefinder/Leica shooting style. The images are spectacular for their style, mood, tone and subtly of content. Take a look... you won't be sorry. Well you will... if only that the images are not yours. :)

I will second John's recommendation. I've just come from looking ast the gallery, and was immediately taken with the range of techniques Morgan was able to show with the camera. A few questions for Morgan:

1. Was everything shot at ISO 100? The indoor stuff is astounding. The underground candids are so sharp - I'm assuming it was something like 1/30 or less.

2. The close-up portraits are also riveting. Were these autofocussed or manual? I've been frustrated at times at how the AF can miss.

3. Was everything done with natural or existing light, or did you use the bounce flash at all? The close up portraits of the older Gentleman with the bald head are extraordinary. I've gotten some nice shots putting the camera at vertical and using the bounce to magnify existing window light.

Lovely series, and makes me want to visit Japan even more (my wife is American, but of Japanese descent).

Thanks Denis!

Everything was shot at ISO100, some of the low light shots are 1/15th, 1/8th or even a 1/4s exposure using the three frame burst and keeping my fingers crossed. My work cameras are much heavier, so perhaps there is some muscle control skill I picked up over the years in there too :p

The Japanese seem to have a thing for indoor fluorescent light, they use it everywhere, including their homes. Completely annoying to my eyes, but made for some nice soft lighting indoors (and some interesting color balances)

I pretty much used the AF 99% of the time and have found it frustrating too, quite often telling me it was in focus when it wasn't.

All of them are available light except for the shot of my in-laws with the two children where I used my Nikon SB800 on the hot shoe as a bounce light so I could get a faster shutter speed

I think Leica should hire me as a product planner, I would really like to oversee an updated version of this camera so I can dictate my ideas of what it should be into it :D

Here are two more from today to keep this thread going:

I found an abandoned house off a road here in San Diego. It looked like it held some secrets among its walls - and every few seconds I would hear strange sounds.

Needless to say, I didn't stay long!

Nice shot, and even nicer, knowing the referent. Thanks for the connection!

Did you rent the ducks from the same place where the World Wildlife Photographer got his wolf? :)

Hi

My humble contribution to this thread. I really love the D2 - would really like an updated D2.

Picture from near by woods in Denmark, no PP.

Best regards

Wonderful shot. I really like the bokeh.

I think we'd all love an updated D2, but I've come to terms with the fact that it's not going to happen. I am enjoying the D2 for what it is - a wonderful "vintage" digital camera able to create some stunning shots in the right conditions. Just like a vintage tube amplifier, it might not be the last word in terms of power or detail, but it has a certain warmth and richness to it that I would not trade for more ISO or more pixels.
