I must say, I love the results, but I am still having a very difficult time focusing with the evf, especially outside. Any advice most welcome -- Thanks!

I have found the autofocus to be slow, but reliable. A number of D2 users, including pros like John Thawley, apparently use the autofocus. After discovering that my manually focused pictures are less likely to be in focus, I use the auto focus most of the time. I apply my creativity by selecting aperture and shutter speed (in addition to subject and composition of course.)

Hi Alberto,

I went outside awhile ago to see if I could replicate and figure out exactly what my problem is, because it's really been bugging me. I discovered that when the sun is at my back it reflects off the silver surface of the D2, and into my right eye, making it very difficult for me to focus (or see much of anything at all) with my glasses on! To make matters worse, when I'm out in the sun I usually have clip-ons attached, albeit thin, but they remove my eye even further from the eyepiece. which allows the bright reflections to overwhelm my pupil (if that makes any sense at all).

The simple solution, of course, is to pop my glasses up onto my head so I can get my eye right up close to the eyepiece!

So, now I know. But I'd never experienced that with any other camera, from Canon 5D to Leica M5 (of course, my eyes were better back then), so my little experiment was definitely worthwhile.

I will try to autofocus more frequently, as well; seems like very good advice.

Thanks so much!

I can't shoot anything with my glasses on. Period.

Rely on the Digilux 2 autofocus. Watch the green light lock. Shoot.

Note, the focus does lock... if you hold down the shutter button 1/2 way.... just focus, don't let up.. then recompose. Bang. The shots are money. I wouldn't rely on the EVF for anything more than composition.

Have fun!

This is a great image. And I'm telling you... DO NOT send this camera in. Leave it alone. Take photos and enjoy it. There's nothing wrong with it. IF it breaks, send it in. But only if it breaks.

Thanks John, for your comments.

Glad it's not just me! I'll take your advice and let the camera autofocus, while I keep my own focus on composition!

Take care...

BTW... on your motorcycle image... using that exposure as a gauge, I'd have gone at least 1/2 stop under and upped the shutter speed to reduce the depth-of-field. I like to shoot the Digilux 2 only as open as it needs to be. In this case, I'd have tried to keep it around 5.6 maybe f/8 if I had too. But if you really want that Leica look.. especially in the corners, you want keep that lens open.... for me, the sweet spots are f/4 - f/5.6. Of course tight headshots, I'll try to get it open even more...

This one's at f/5.6

I'm with you, John, could not agree more...

So then, you might be surprised to learn that this image was taken with the lens wide open: f/2.0 @1/2000!!

All that DOF was the result of the 7mm wide angle lens. Very hard to limit DOF at that focal length, though I might have tried to get a bit closer. I, too, would have preferred a bit more shallow; I rarely close down more than I have to with the D2.

It's a small sensor-short focal length quality I'm learning to live with, a trade-off against not carrying my full-frame 5D which offers much more control over DOF, but is just too cumbersome for me to drag around casually these days! And, despite its shortcomings, I find the texture of the D2 files to be utterly intoxicating and more pleasing to my eye, so it's quickly becoming one of my favorite cameras of the last 40 years or so.

Thanks again for your input and great advice; always appreciated...

Experimented with some PP for the first time yesterday.

Feel free to provide any C&C, suggestions, or tips. I want to learn.

Thanks Oskar
