TigrisJK Posted November 30, 2013 Share #61 Posted November 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lol Artin. I'm in Hong Kong right now doing some traveling and visiting the home country and the red dot is definitely noticeable here. Mostly because tons of HKers are camera obsessed. It's not so much an issue in Toronto at all. I've also only had my M about a month and a week or so and the white M paint in the recess is already rubbing off from my index finger placement. The camera is basically in my hand every day, so ... I'm actually looking forward to my camera brassing from use so this doesn't bother me.
Advertisement Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 Hi TigrisJK, Take a look here m240: black dot?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 1, 2013 Share #62 Posted December 1, 2013 . If the tape don't stick I'll just rip the red dot off and throw it away, .I would not do that if I were you. The hole behind the dot will allow water and dust ingress.
Leonil Posted December 1, 2013 Share #63 Posted December 1, 2013 If stealthyness is such an imperative, then just take pictures with a spy camera, or you know.... hide in a box, set up candid cameras around the area... It still boggles my mind that things like a small red dot will make a CAMERA invisible. EVERYONE will see it. Making someone NOT pay attention is another matter... Magicians like myself, call this "misdirection" My dad is the best street photographer, he has a 7D, sets it to Automatic and has no idea about cameras and JUST takes photos of people he finds interesting, but he LOOKS like a tourist I once saw a Leica shooter with tape all over his Leica, but was acting like a photographer, leaning back, keeping his camera to his face as he walked, leaning in, on his knees.... looking creepy. EVERYONE was noticing him, at the same time, no one gave a toss about my dad and I. My dad the tourist, and me, asking permission from people. If you are worried about a red dot, just cover yourself with lemon juice, or tape yourself up with gaffer tape.
Naper Posted December 1, 2013 Share #64 Posted December 1, 2013 At first I thought the red dot bashing was a joke. I don't get it!! Most people on the street don't know what the red dot is or anything about Leica for that matter. Covering the dot will not change anything. People in the know will recognize a Leica M red dot or not. If its such a big issue, don't buy the camera. Problem solved.
lct Posted December 1, 2013 Share #65 Posted December 1, 2013 ...Covering the dot will not change anything... For you. Others like this old bloke have seen these things appear in the eightees and don't like them at all. So no red dot on my M3, M4-2 and M6J, a black dot on my M8.2 and... a piece of tape on my M240. YMMV.
Karl G Posted December 1, 2013 Share #66 Posted December 1, 2013 Regarding those that want a black dot and do not want the joy of a craft project: Actually there is a gentleman making very nice Dots to replace the red dot on the 240 and thise that chose to do so are very happy with the quality and fit. I can not attest to it personally because I have not done so. I have seen black dots with silver Leica script and black/black. Black Dot and Script on Leica M 240-Facebook Link The gentleman's name is Micael Lim on Facebook. Good Luck!
Guest jvansmit Posted December 2, 2013 Share #67 Posted December 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Covering the dot will not change anything. . My M8.2 (black dot) was ripped off my shoulder 3-4 years ago here in Hong Kong. A year later, someone tried to rip away my M9 (red dot) but luckily I had the camera strap fastened to my packpack strap with a small snaplink so the guy didn't get very far. A few weekends ago, I stupidly left my M240 (very large shiny red dot !) in a cafe, and a waitress very kindly ran down the road after me with it. I still wonder if she would have done that if it had trashy black tape on it.

mustafasoleiman Posted December 5, 2013 Share #69 Posted December 5, 2013 Turns out they are $80... yes I was shocked too... The black dot for my M9 was €5...
StephenPatterson Posted December 6, 2013 Share #70 Posted December 6, 2013 The $80 price is not for the black dot, it's for the labor to strip and repaint the red dot with several layers of enamel paint. The man who does this is a cosmetic dentist (I'm sure there is a more professional name which I don't know). This is not a ten minute job, and while I don't know what an average hourly rate is for a cosmetic dentist I would imagine it's more than minimum wage. StephenPatterson Posted December 6, 2013 Share #73 Posted December 6, 2013 This thread is a run-up to the 40th anniversary of Monty Python, right? In a world where people pay thousands or tens of thousands above normal price for limited edition versions the personalizing of a logo seems quite sensible. ronaldh Posted December 6, 2013 Share #74 Posted December 6, 2013 Always carry it in its box with the plain cover. That, in fact, is the reason for the box being inside a box.
leica lux Posted December 6, 2013 Share #75 Posted December 6, 2013 Given that one could choose the color, 100$ for changing the logo seems quite cheap for a customized and unique look of a Leica M. I want mine purple then

Jeff S Posted December 6, 2013 Share #79 Posted December 6, 2013 This thread is a run-up to the 40th anniversary of Monty Python, right? Leica removed the dot and added script to the M9 for over $1000 and people gobbled them up. Who needs comedic references when real life is so much more amusing? This is not a ten minute job, and while I don't know what an average hourly rate is for a cosmetic dentist I would imagine it's more than minimum wage. I totally understand that it is not easy. I am not willing pay $80 though. For me it is worth it around $20-$30 and maybe even at $50. Although considering the labor, it also makes me wonder if getting some other color would be worth it. For now, black tape will work. If anyone knows where to source proper red dots from, I wouldn't mind taking a stab at making them.
