satureyes Posted January 30, 2013 Share #103 Posted January 30, 2013 Here's a little tongue-in-cheek view of mine... I think the resentment that seems to be appearing about the new M - is due to the following: - you want one and are trying to convince yourself that it wont be good - you are jealous that some 'kids' can use cameras to create moving images as well as still ones.. - You're going to adamantly claim that the M9 is 'better' for DR, for quality because of the sensor blah blah.. really you're just pi**ed that you dont have top of the range camera anymore (even though you have an average age of 48) As a pro photographer - about 20% of my current income comes from video that I shoot and edit. I shoot stills and video on some of my jobs. I charge accordingly. The M240 will not be a turkey. No matter how much you try and convince yourself it will be to try and alleviate any GAS. Paulus Posted January 30, 2013 Author Share #104 Posted January 30, 2013 Here's a little tongue-in-cheek view of mine... I think the resentment that seems to be appearing about the new M - is due to the following: - you want one and are trying to convince yourself that it wont be good Of course I want one. But I'm not sure I need one and think that a lot of users think this also. I cannot spend my money on everything that I want, so I have to choose. I think one calls this rethinking your priorities. If you give me € 6000,- I order the camera immediately.I doesn't take much space. - you are jealous that some 'kids' can use cameras to create moving images as well as still ones.. No. I don't think so. Video is something I don't do. I don't know exactly why, but I never liked doing it. I like to watch movies, but I don't like to do it myself. I don't understand why it should make me jealous and it doesn't. - You're going to adamantly claim that the M9 is 'better' for DR, for quality because of the sensor blah blah.. really you're just pi**ed that you dont have top of the range camera anymore (even though you have an average age of 48) I don't believe I'll get pi**ed that easily. I think the Hasselblad negative was better than my M6 negative. That didn't " pi** me off" either. Why should the better quality of any other camera do that? If I want a better quality and could not get it. That would be frustrating, but if I think I won't need the better quality, because I would not do so much with it and it wouldn't make my picture significantly better. Why should that be annoying? As a pro photographer - about 20% of my current income comes from video that I shoot and edit. I shoot stills and video on some of my jobs. I charge accordingly. I saw your work, it looks great! The M240 will not be a turkey. No matter how much you try and convince yourself it will be to try and alleviate any GAS. I think the M will sell immensely. But please could you, someone explain to me, what the expression GAS means exactly. I saw it sometimes before, but do not exactly understand what it means,

fotografr Posted January 31, 2013 Share #106 Posted January 31, 2013 The Leica transition from film to digital was a bit rocky, but they have now succeeded in producing an outstanding line of digital cameras. Their lenses are outrageously good--arguably the best in the business--and the M body still has the distinct advantages that brought many of us into their systems in the first place. They are solid, long lasting, meticulously crafted, relatively compact and unburdened by the inherent problems of autofocus cameras. Other digital cameras need to be updated every couple of years, but the digital M is able to be a long term investment. I'm using an M8 that is six years old and functioning perfectly. During that same time period, I have gone from a Canon 5D to the 5D MkII and now to the 5D MkIII. I see M cameras in the hands of young pros fairly often, as well as hanging from the shoulders of network news corespondents and Hollywood personalities. They are widely recognized as being the best photographic tools made. I don't think the problem is going to be that the M Leica will lose appeal and fade away, but rather that it will continue to be so sought after that the Leica factory will always be behind on filling orders. Rick Posted February 1, 2013 Share #109 Posted February 1, 2013 I think a lot of people buy Leica just because they want to be seen with one. To 99.9% of this planet's population, a Leica M9 or a MM is just an obsolete camera. Even a crappy Rolex carries more prestige. - Lars Bergquist

It's value appreciates almost from day one, especially if it's a much sought after M240.

Even a crappy Rolex carries more prestige. - Lars Bergquist A couple of weeks ago I was shooting cyclocross championships with my M8. A group of pro photographers (they had event credentials and bibs) walked by and one commented, "Now THAT"S a camera!" About five minutes later a couple more photographers walked by and I immediately noticed one had a new ME hanging from his shoulder. These are not unusual or unique experiences. If you think Leica is a dead brand--you are dead wrong!
BerndReini Posted February 1, 2013 Share #114 Posted February 1, 2013 I work with a lot of set photographers and most of them use Canons, a few of them Nikons. They do their job with these fine tools but almost every one of them feels completely uninspired by them and many shoot different brands and formats like film Hasselblads etc. for their personal work. I think one of the reasons is that their professional photos all look the same. Our hallways are lined with set photos from at least five different photographers, and there is one from a shoot I lit and shot for television. My boss asked me one day if I took the still picture with my Leica. I answered that I didn't. When I looked at the shot, I remembered that my friend Dave had taken it with a Nikon D700 and prime lenses. He told me that due to the low light level, he would push a the Raw file a little rather than raising the ISO. The resulting photo looked somewhat contrasty and a little bit desaturated, but also bitingly sharp, and completely different from all the other photos next to it. So I went back to my boss and said: "It wasn't me who shot it, but I see why you thought I did. Good eye, boss."
Jeffry Abt Posted February 1, 2013 Share #115 Posted February 1, 2013 "I think a lot of people buy Leica just because they want to be seen with one." I'm of the view that this is not true. Wolfgang Esslinger Posted February 2, 2013 Share #118 Posted February 2, 2013 I actually felt more secure in dark corners of some cities 5 years ago when Leica was either unknown or seen as being some really outdated stuff by the majority.
thrid Posted February 2, 2013 Share #119 Posted February 2, 2013 I actually felt more secure in dark corners of some cities 5 years ago when Leica was either unknown or seen as being some really outdated stuff by the majority. It's certainly has become a more recognizable brand in recent years. Five years ago it was mostly pros or someone who a long time ago owned one that would recognize it. Nowadays all sorts of people recognize a them and what's even worse, usually the second comment out of their mouth is in regards to how expensive Leica gear is. Thankfully my Leicas are pretty beat up and film based, so they are less desirable to unscrupulous individuals, but I do kind of miss the days of anonymity and it being referred to as a 'funny old camera.' On the other hand the M9 is often mistaken for an old film camera...
toyfel Posted February 3, 2013 Share #120 Posted February 3, 2013 When I cycled home this evening, I made a mental note to myself. Paulus, don't leave your wife or children with al this junk.
