i did something incredibly stupid this morning. using a lens pen's brush to clean the lens surface of my Leica lens, i got a little sloppy with my motion and some of the fine bristles hit the back of the lens where there's some oil naturally present. basically, i got some of that oil on the back surface of my lens. :o

instead of doing more dumb things, i just put the lens caps back on to decide how best to clean this. can someone please recommend whether i need to do a CLA at this point or whether i have simpler ways to clean this properly? trying not to flip out. thanks in advance for any advice.

Just my two-bits - I've had the same issue many times over the decades.

Today I clean such messes with Purosol and a new micro-fibre cloth applied several times gently and with patience.

Back in the 'day', I would recommend a fine Scotch swirled about the mouth, swallowed, then breathed upon the lens followed by a micro-fibre cloth. Can't do that anymore. :)

The first thing I would do is take a clean soft cloth and wipe around the oily/greasy area so it can't happen again. Then a tiny drop of lens cleaning fluid on a lens cloth to clean the glass. But breathing on it with Scotch ladden breath is perhaps better.

Zeiss market "single use" wipes in sachets which are excellent. Google Zeiss lens wipes or look on eBay? Amazon list them too. Try your optometrist or camera shop? I just buy packs of 200 or so on-line.

They contain cleaning fluid specifically designed for precision optical surfaces and the single use means that you cannot inadvertently introduce more contaminant or grit . A CLEAN microfibre cloth can also be used but the fluid will probably be required. Actually I think Zeiss still sell a small pouch kit with some wipes. cloth and a collapsible brush too.

All brushes inevitably acquire oil on the fibres which will smear on the surface too. You can clean them with another wipe or some sensor cleaning fluid.

I use these, too. Very convenient. You can get the kit with the microfiber cloths included (Zeiss Lens Cleaning Cloths 1439-271 B&H Photo Video ) and then restock with the 200 count boxes w/o the microfiber cloths (Amazon.com: Zeiss Pre-Moistened Lens Cloths Wipes 200c: Health & Personal Care)
