Jamie Roberts Posted November 16, 2012 Share #301 Â Posted November 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) For me the deal maker or breaker will be, simply put, the combination of colour and detail out of the M. Â The M9 is superb in this regard. It lives exceptionally nicely alongside the higher ISO capable slightly higer resolution 5d3. Printing large, there is not much difference between them. People are literally hard pressed to see the difference in prints (or in digital output, frankly). Â That's an astonishing thing, actually. The 5d3 is arguably one of Canon's very best cameras so far, IMO, and three years newer than the M9. Colour is excellent, as is high ISO. But the fact I can shoot the M9 right alongside it in the same situations is also fantastic. Â So while I welcome higher ISO, and whatever dynamic range increase the new sensor brings, it has to bring with it something of the palette of the M9 (and M8, DMR and S2). There's a family resemblance there that Canon is only now, IMO, catching up with (and Nikon, again, IMO, has a ways to go there). Â Can't tell this till I have my hands on the raw files. Then I'll see if I buy an M or an M9P.

01af Posted November 17, 2012 Share #302 Â Posted November 17, 2012 What does interest me about the M-240 ... ... it's the world's first camera that will bring my closet full of Rokkor lenses into the digital age. Â 24 MP? Irrelevant. Â Video? Hogwash. Â The crucial point is CMOS and live view, in conjunction with 35-mm full-frame format and a short lens mount register distance. Wonder why the mirrorless crowd keeps being stuck to miniature formats. A 35-mm full-frame mirrorless will be a bombshell in the digital camera market, and Leica is about to be the first to make it happen ... I, for one, can't wait. Pre-ordered mine back in May. Â ... my experience of the M9 alongside the 5D2 has been the same - two fully compatible system in terms of print or on-screen end results. I love working with the combination (long on the 5D2 / 18 up to 50 on the M9), and I've never had a client express anything but delight about the results. Lens), some day : the fact that it has came from Leica, considering the competitors' size, is amazing... I wonder if Sony's designers in charge of the RX1 did decide for fixed lens, counting on the fact that Leica wouldn't had been able to make the M within the same timeframe... chris_tribble Posted November 17, 2012 Author Share #306  Posted November 17, 2012 ... well it would be if it wasn't manual focus and have to use focus peaking and a bolt on hideous viewfinder  But it's got a built in RANGEFINDER - for me, this is the killer feature. I'd have had no interest in an autofocus camera that couldn't take my M glass. With the M-240 (so long as IQ is at the very least as good as the M9 - and preferably somewhat better), I get the best of both worlds...
jonoslack Posted November 17, 2012 Share #307  Posted November 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) ... well it would be if it wasn't manual focus and have to use focus peaking and a bolt on hideous viewfinder  But we've always bolted on viewfinders to our M cameras - usually different ones for each lens, very expensive (much more than this one) and sometimes even uglier (frankenfinder for instance).  Why is this different - it's actually less ugly then some of the many other viewfinders which it will certainly make redundant.  But as Jamie says - the important thing is the files, and if they're good enough .. . jaapv Posted November 17, 2012 Share #308 Â Posted November 17, 2012 I have no doubts on that account. With a track record of the D2, DMR, M8, M9 it seems that Leica is well aware of what a good file looks like.

.... and if they are not substantially better than the M9 I will not buy it. ()  I do not feel that the additional features alone are worth $8000.  ..... and I do not think Canon and Nikon users will defect in droves to a more expensive manual alternative purely because it is a full frame mirrorless body. chris_tribble Posted November 23, 2012 Author Share #310  Posted November 23, 2012 I know this question has been asked before, but as yet I don't think I've seen an answer.  QUESTION - does any one who's used the new R to M adapter know what framelines it brings up? I'm hoping that it will be the 35mm set. Grateful if anyone can answer as it will perhaps have an impact on adding 6 bit coding to alternative mounts.  Thanks.

wlaidlaw Posted November 23, 2012 Share #312 Â Posted November 23, 2012 Chris, Â I think the consensus was that it did not move the frame cam, which means 35/135. That is also what my Leitax adapter does, although I have a feeling that David may be able to do something else to special order. I don't know if anyone does an R to LTM adapter, onto which you could then screw whichever LTM to M adapter with frame selection you wanted, if you needed something different. bocaburger Posted November 23, 2012 Share #313 Â Posted November 23, 2012 I also bought the OLY EVF2 (in fact, 2 of them, I got a great deal ) in case someday I might get the camera. Of course I imagine that they are pretty busy in Solms right now ;-) Â Hope you get a definitive answer since on another thread we have gone round and round on this question. Â He (Jesko) made a statement in an interview that on the M9 the R adapter would make focusing hit or miss since the is no rangefinder coupling nor LV on the M9. Now since the M frame lines are LCD maybe the M sees the R adapter and does not even light up the frame lines, i.e., no rangefinder coupling on it either?.
