I plan to use it mostly like the M9.

I may or may not get the EVF to use with my 24mm, depending on how easy it is to use live view and how good the screen is.

I have no plans to get any R lenses, but it is nice to know the option is there if I get an assignment that call for technical shots that cant be done with my canons.

The Apo 180/3.4 R performs flawlessly with the 2xApo-Extender. I have used the combo on film, the DMR and Digilux3 with equally good results (related to the quality of the recording medium of course)

I fail to see how you could fit the Apo-Telyt 135 M to the Ap0o-extender R, however.

Jaap, It has been only a silly dream because I'm always thinking of so wonderful lens. (No any problem for focusing with the rangefinder!!).

A query more please, if you has check it, worth buying the ELPRO 1:2-1:1 macro lens for the Apo Macro Elmarit, of course if I need to reach 1:1. Is there any loose of quality?

Thank you.

Francisco.

At least the DSLR won't have a viewfinder blackout like an EVF.

That's a point I haven't seen anyone mention. How long is the blackout with the Mnothing+EVF? My only EVF camera is an LX5, so maybe not a good example, but it blacks out for about 1/4 second even at normal daylight shutter speeds.

My personal view is that the advantages of a mid-range zoom for the M-240 are outweighed by the disadvantages, no RF coupling, viewfinder obstruction, so EVF only, weight and bulk. The MATE gets close to fulfilling my requirements in this area.

If I were to go for a mid range zoom, my personal choice would be the Contax MMJ 28-85/f3.3-4 Vario-Sonnar. I had both this and the earlier 35-70. Zeiss claimed they were as good as the Contax primes in that range and we all know how good they were. I think a small pinch of salt needs to be taken with this claim but they were certainly very good lenses. There is no downside with the wider range zoom, other than a modest increase in size. There is also the 35-135/f3.3 Contax lens but although very good, this is too big and heavy to be an every day hand held user. Rayqual and others make Contax to Leica M adapters.

Good thinking Wilson - and the Contax lenses are considerably cheaper than their Leica counterparts (although, I wonder if that will last?).

Hi,

I was thinking about selling my contax zeiss lenses I have left (the 21mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4 and 100 f/2) but maybe they can be used on the new M. I wonder if there will be a loss in quality due to the fact that they were designed for analog photography and not for a 24mp digital sensor..

So it's again a question of selling or keeping ...

If you're thinking about getting the M-240 I'd certainly hold on to the 85 1.4 and 100 f2. The others are excellent lenses, but with these focal lengths I'd prefer to use them on a DSLR or to get RF equivalents to use on the M-240. Just my humble opinion :)

There is no earthly reason to suppose a lens will perform worse because it was "designed for film" If they are good on film they will be excellent on the M sensor that was designed to accept a wide range of incidence angles.

Hi Luigi

As far as I'm aware focus peaking does work on live view and on EVF on any lens, whether coded / selected or not - so it should also work with lenses with the extenders added.

all the best

Yes, it would be logical... but in another thread it seemed that wasn't exactly like this, at least on one of the "demo" items with EVF, R adapter and an R lens...

Luigi,

I would hope just prototype glitches. The focus peaking is generated by the live view download from the sensor and either contrast or phase difference detection (don't know which). It is therefore is nothing at all to do with the lens, just the sharpness of the edges of parts of the image formed on the sensor.

Sorry... do you mean that you used the 28-90 R with adapter and you had the focus peaking feature working ? LV on LCD or EVF too ?

Yes, with LCD. Did not use the EVF with that camera, but used it with another camera where they put a 135 M lens on it and the in focus red shimmering was very effective for me.

PM if you have more questions or if I do not understand your question.

Has anyone any thoughts as to whether the M will suffer from the rolling shutter effects that some other CMOS cameras suffer from or does the mechanical shutter eliminate that?

My local camera dealer was offering a package deal of an Olympus EPL-1 body with a VF-2 viewer for just £308. As my Ricoh small back up camera is starting to die with a sticking extend/retract lens, I was looking for a replacement small/cheap back up camera anyway. This therefore means I have got a VF ready for the M at less than the Leica price with the Olympus body effectively thrown in for free. I have bought a cheapo Fleabay M to Oly adapter and will probably use it either with my Summicron 28 or Biogon 25. I am off to Rome at the end of next week for friends' 25th wedding anniversary party and the Oly will make a nice light camera to carry around. I may even get a S/H 14-42 zoom for it. It will also allow me to check out my M converted 80-200 Vario-Elmar-R.
