Why risk all the problems?

Just curious.

With all of the sudden deaths of the Leica M8. Why would a person want to spend 5k on that experiment? Personally, I was very close to buying a 15k Leica M8 kit and selling my Canon gear. I am so happy I did not take that plunge, and I regret that I was not able to trust the M8 enough to take that step. I guess I am a little confused by all the reports about Leica M8 failures and the glitches abound. Yet, people are still ordering the M8.

If I had a slew of useless leica M lenses, I guess I would order the M8 as well. Maybe I answered my question for myself. It still seem to be a tragedy that the Leica name is going down the tubes with what could have been an amazing product.

Regards,

I was going to name this thread "ole reliable" but instead saw this one and decided to post here.

I am on a two week trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. I carried in a digital based Hasselblad, an M8, and an MP.

As I was headed into the volcano area to photograph (and because of the hiking the Leica Ms were on my shoulder, not the Hasselblad), the usual and expected breakdown of gear happened.

My MP locked up and in a call from my cell to Leica NJ for a fast fix in the crater was told "send it back. No fix I can do." Ole Reliable M8 saved the day.

I am heading to visit five volcanos in Italy in September with some serious hiking. I may just carry two M8s and forget the rest.

Who said the name LEICA is going down the tubes??? Every new product has its flaws , but not every M8 is misbehaving as you want to describe it. I have had not one single problem with my M8 and I know people on here who can't report anything bad either.

The short answer, from my perspective, is that it is a wonderful camera. I had one body fail a month or two ago (as you've probably read) but I've been working with the current body for several hours every day down here in Florida and it has been a real pleasure. Naturally, I have backup equipment but the M8 has been fine.

Cheers,

Sean

I had my failure in December and frankly that will be the last one. Been cruising along doing jobs and making money. It works and it works awesome and my images sing just as nice as my DMR, If i can get that out of a small box order me a third one. LOL

Honestly i have no issues recommending it too anyone. Most of the failures you see are right here on this forum. i don't see many reports outside these walls . Now maybe we don't hear about it but i agree the numbers could be lower and like everyone else including leica hopes we can start talking about shooting again and not this stuff. I look forward to that day when we can get back to talking about gear in a postive way and the images we take with it

To paraphrase the great American humorist and writer, Mark Twain, let me state that teh "rumors of Leica's demise are indeed unfounded and premature." The M8 is new and very sophisticated and will have the inexorable glitches... The company is responsive adn has already fixed a large number of them. I suspect that the evidence iwll show that most of the electronic failures are due to a software problem that mayhave been corrected in the most recent update. Have a bit more faith in this marvelous machine !! ;)

I am so happy with my M8 that I sold my 5D and most of my Canon gear. The M8 is so much fun to use, the glass is wonderful and the photos make me very happy. The teething pains will be over soon and I don't believe that the company is going down the tubes.

spersky, spersky; this Forum is well organized. Anybody taking the trouble to search your posts can see that while you have no Leica gear, you just pass water on something you know sweet little about.

You Sir are a troll.

And as to the M8; it is a fantastic camera. And those of us who bought it love it. Few warts - more pimples really - and all.

Have a nice week-end; whatever trolls do on week ends.

To quote from Spinal Tap, with fully intended sarcasm: "This is becoming a refrain." Everyone wants to join the M8-has-a-problem bandwagon prior to giving the camera a real chance. Personally, I love it! I can accept a new product with its flaws, especially when it comes with so much potential. I will probably not sell my Epson RD-1s any time soon, but I will be using my M8 more and more, and I assume that it will replace my film Ms as my main camera some day soon.

Hi Steven,

I was in much the same boat as you. Only difference, I did sell my Canon stuff - just got Canon "fatigue" I guess. Worst of all, I did not realise that I would end up waiting 4 months for my M8. Here I must say that I don't depend solely on photography for my living, so I could take the chance and ditch the Canon stuff. For income generating work, I use a Rollei 66 with 120 roll film at the moment. Once I get my M8, I'll see how things go - possibly get an M7 as a backup camera. That way I'll also have both bases covered, digital and film, while using the same lenes - albeit with a different FOV.

There is actually such a thing called the Canon Rebel. All the pros with big Canon gear are using it as a backup. It's plasticky, light and cheap, and I would get this with a kit lens as a backup for a Leica, no problem.

In a way, my ownership of the pro Canons is a nuisance because they are so massive that it's nonsensical to use them as backup.

Edmund
