Future upgradeability of new Leica M's EVF

Now would Leica had implemented some intelligent image stabilization into the system, this all would be very exciting, but as it is now - old tech EVF + lack of stabilization or improved (reduced) lag, this EVF is merely a gimmick solution for verifying mechanical RF/lens collimation or shooting from awkward angles with an eye level finder............................

 

As long as you don't want to stabilize the whole EVF image and if the Maestro processing power is sufficient a stabilized EVF solution may be possible. This could produce a small stable area within the frame which could be used for critical focusing. It's possible to shift and overlay selected areas from sequential frames to provide a stable VF image of part of the scene you are photographing.

Yes stabilisation of both lens and the EVF image is quite possible as Olympus have demonstrated in the OM-D E-M5 and it offers the possibility of twice the refresh rate in the viewfinder. Admittedly this is with a micro four thirds sensor though a rather good one from Sony with 16Mpx. It makes me consider whether it is really worth upgrading from the M9 to the new M. I could stick to the M9 for wide and medium lenses and use my OM-D for the tele stuff with the advantage of the X2 crop factor.

Well, if the processor etc. is fast enough the 30fps could be interpolated up to 60fps or more to give a display with less judder with movement of the camera or subject. Here's hoping.... I also hope the electrical interface is compatible with future EVF display improvements.

Thank you Bob but i've been told that the limitation of 30 fps could be due to the M240's sensor itself so i wonder how we might profit from future EVF improvements from this standpoint.

The output from the sensor remains at 30fps but the software generates an intermediate frame from two consectutive (or more) sensor frames. The intermediate and original frames are then displayed sequentially to give a frame rate of 60fps. This is similar to what 120Hz TVs do by interpolating a 60 Hz frame rate. Smart software can use techniques such as motion prediction to improve the visual result.

 

Whether the interpolation software would run in the camera or EVF we don't know - it could be either. Having an external EVF may be a blessing considering the rate of development, see Epson Ultramicon display.

Yes, but that introduces a delay in the signal which is precisely what you want to avoid. In TVs it doesn't matter, but it does in a viewfinder. The interpolated 60 Hz signal would be worse than the original 30 Hz one.

For anybody thinking of buying the Leica branded EVF I would wait and keep reading the photo press as it may already be out of date, unless they can do a quick switcheroo. Epson have announced a considerably higher grade EVF and if things go to the usual plan the final product will follow soon, probably the Olympus VF-5.

For anybody thinking of buying the Leica branded EVF I would wait and keep reading the photo press as it may already be out of date, unless they can do a quick switcheroo. Epson have announced a considerably higher grade EVF and if things go to the usual plan the final product will follow soon, probably the Olympus VF-5.

"SVGA (800 x 600 x 3) versions of Epson's technology are already used in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, along with add-on finders for Olympus, Ricoh and Leica cameras. "

 

The new finder will be for both internal and external use, just like the current one.

There's something i don't quite understand here. What's the point of expecting a "more modern" EVF for the M240 if the slow frame rate of 30 fps is not due to the EVF but to the camera itself?

 

The camera is 30 fps at Full HD resolution. The viewfinder is only VGA solution.

Actually it is SVGA (800 x 600). The new viewfinder would be 1024 x 768, i.e. XGA, requiring about 64% more bandwith. The rear display is VGA though.

Well Sony just invested in Olympus so I wonder if future Olympus and Leica finders might use Sony panels or re-branded EVFs and not the Epson ones.

I did wonder, given it is probably 3 months at least before any of us have our ordered M's, that Leica might decide to use the new Epson 2.4MP screen on their EVF2. No, it's a silly idea, they will want to sell us an EVF3, with the new screen, in due course. Actually at just over £300 for the EVF, an upgrade in 18 months or so will not be too painful.
