dwbell Posted September 17, 2012 Share #101 Posted September 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like the specs, but who or what does their product design? In this day and age, I ask you? Not getting one until I've seen the IQ, high ISO and felt it in hand. Glad lots of you trust it's IQ as seen? My feeling is the M is trying to replace not my M9, but rather my 5DII. And that's a tough sell.
Advertisement Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Hi dwbell, Take a look here Leica M and M-E. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hhanebeck Posted September 17, 2012 Share #102 Posted September 17, 2012 Well, I am not sure... If I want to get rid of the lever for frame selection of my M9, I don't need an upgrade, I just need a pliers. I'd rather prefer a M-E upgraded with frame-selectors, if I'd ever think of buying one. You are right! There also is no USB ... I guess my assumptions went too far here! : ) Cheers, Chris
UliWer Posted September 17, 2012 Share #103 Posted September 17, 2012 Yea! Where are the new lenses Leica?!? I am glad, they left them out this time. Spares me expenditure. And since I was very wrong with my predictions for a new "mirrorless" camera without rangefinder as the "R-solution" I am happy that I am still right that there will be no 28mm Summilux. Biggus Dickkus Posted September 17, 2012 Share #104 Posted September 17, 2012 I'm sort confused to. I'm not sure what I was hoping for, but am more interested in getting an M9 now :-). -jbl I agree. This looks more like a Panasonic camera than a Leica from the back and its whey too complicated too. Looks like Leica have tried to offer an "all things to all men" camera, maybe trying to capture more of the DLSR market from Nikon. Unfortunately it has nothing I would want, or would want to swap my M9-P for... I would be more interested in the Monochrone than this M. All I need is a nice simple fuss free camera with a proper view finder. Thankfully I already have one!
NZDavid Posted September 17, 2012 Share #105 Posted September 17, 2012 Wow, only a handful of negative comments here so far! Brilliant. Really impressive new range. Only an APS sensor EVIL camera is missing from the line-up. But too many models would be confusing. There is unprecedented choice. Now we'll have to get used to M body types: 220, 240, etc. A bit like Mercedes-Benz and BMW chassis numbers. Perhaps this sub-forum should be renamed simply "M Digital". Jerrold Posted September 17, 2012 Share #106 Posted September 17, 2012 not discussed yet, but unless there is something electronic about the R->M adapter, using the short flange->sensor distance in combination with say a Nikon F->M adaptor I have kicking around, I could mount an old 600mm lens and use it with liveview? Presumably this would open up pretty much any other SLR lens ever made with a suitable adapter to fit the M in the same way people have been doing with Canons for a while. Since many older R lenses have no electronics I'm guessing this is now in the cards... Could be fun! Telescopes, microscopes...
CalArts 99 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #107 Posted September 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Did you hear the new shutter to compare it to the M9/P?!? Can't confirm the above: for me the M9-shutter sounds very good. No, of course I haven't heard it. I'm only going by the technical data and their marketing. They mention a quiet shutter several times with the M-E and not so with the M9/M9-P. The M9 tech data says: "microprocessor-controlled, exceptionally low-noise metal blade shutter with vertical movement." The M-E tech data says: "closed type focal plane shutter for classic image exposure, with external cocking mechanics." Maybe it's just the same thing written differently. But what is "external cocking mechanics?" I guess we'll know eventually. But I personally dislike the metallic whirring and clicking sound of my M9. Granted I came from the M6 (no comparison, the M6 sounds luscious.) But I actually like the sound of my D3s shutter better than my M9. It has an authoritative solid sound (even with a mirror), but the M9 sounds more like a stone rattling in an empty tin can.
iforum Posted September 17, 2012 Share #108 Posted September 17, 2012 I will be interesting to see how the video quality and ease of use stacks up with panasonic and sony offerings. My guess it is all a bit of a add on.
kokoshawnuff Posted September 17, 2012 Share #109 Posted September 17, 2012 With live view one doesn't necessarily even need Leica's adapter to use all of the R lenses.
graham_mitchell Posted September 17, 2012 Share #110 Posted September 17, 2012 Cool! The M-E will be 4800€. Like a second hand M9. Ehehehe http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-news/2012/09/leica-m-e/ In my view that makes a used M9 worth €3500-4000. It's a good day for people looking to join the Leica family. Voigt Posted September 17, 2012 Share #111 Posted September 17, 2012 The added 5mm in girth, thickness, might possibly be from the addition of the the small thumb rest which now protrudes from the back of the camera body.
MartinL Posted September 17, 2012 Share #112 Posted September 17, 2012 I took a leap on a very good deal on a new M9-P (I like the leather upholstery, security glass, chrome wheels, and plain label that makes all the robbers think I'm shooting with a Coolpix 990.) Camera arrived today at a cost under the anticipated ME. The M-New ISO performance is very attractive and persuasive. But that's about it. There's enough of a cost (and delivery time) delta between it and the M9 that I feel pretty good about the M9 which looks to be the "anchor" of the Leica lineup. Stealth3kpl Posted September 17, 2012 Share #113 Posted September 17, 2012 Mine too. Pete Well, we'll see what the US price of the Leica M is, but it looks like Leica *nailed* my M10 wishlist: Maestro processor / faster throughput (I'm hoping anyway) Better DR / noise / ISO capability Redesign of the OVF (with LED illumination of framelines) Replacement of the OVF for more interesting things with the EVF. We'll see if it's worth having X-synch and hotshoe colour continuity with previous models (we'll see about that, but the choice of sensor manufacturer is really interesting!) live view with high resolution should give some indication of how far off the RF is for a field adjustment (yay!) resolution is *perfect* for a small system additional weather resistance M9-esque price The only things I won't know till I have one in hand will be the noise level of the shutter, and how the buffer works with uncompressed DNGs As for the M-E, I already have one, since I never use the USB port on the M9 and my frameline selector lever fell off THANK-YOU LEICA! efreed2754 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #114 Posted September 17, 2012 My question is how well flex lenses will work on the M. Guess Leica might develop new macro and tele lenses with an M mount Thoughts?

UliWer Posted September 17, 2012 Share #116 Posted September 17, 2012 You are right, the description differs. Though as long as I havn't heard the new M-E, I think it's marketing spreech, when they write about the silent shutter release. In Mr. Dooley's video the sound of the shutter release (for the new M) really sounds like that of a film-M. Though I stay sceptical until I really heard it. andybarton Posted September 17, 2012 Share #118 Posted September 17, 2012 No one has mentioned the M-E colour from what I can see. Battleship grey. Not pretty. There were gasps when we found out the price of the M. Seriously tempted to join the Digital M fraternity now, but will leave it a year to see what the "Number 2 on dealers list" guys discover first. kokoshawnuff Posted September 17, 2012 Share #119 Posted September 17, 2012 No one has mentioned the M-E colour from what I can see. Battleship grey. Not pretty. really bad indeed. Glad they're keeping something "basic" to go with the modern powerhouse though.
CalArts 99 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #120 Posted September 17, 2012 No one has mentioned the M-E colour from what I can see. Battleship grey. Not pretty. fwiw, I mentioned it very early on in another post just after the web page went back up. And with that silver shutter speed dial, I personally dislike it. For a 'traditionalist' model, blue-grey is just not 'right.'
