ananda Posted August 24, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted August 24, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Would there be any practical VISIBLE difference between using a 1.4 50 Summilux on an M( vs the new 50 Summicron ASPH APO??? Â I have the 1.4 Lux and the 28 Summicron. I have considered trading thse two for the APO 50. RedUcing kit to just one lens. Â I use the 50 85 percent of the time. Â Is this an insane thought? Larcomb Posted August 24, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted August 24, 2012 Yes. Â I doubt that you would see a whole lot of difference. Now compared with the older Summilux (1961 design) I am sure you would.

wudai_e Posted August 24, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted August 24, 2012 If I ever get the 50mm APO, should I send my body in for a calibration again? Just saying...
tobey bilek Posted August 24, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted August 24, 2012 For double the price and the loss of one stop, it must be better at 2.0 & 2.8 to justify it and there may be some other features such as less distortion or CA , even better than what you have. Smaller than 4.0, the one you have is essentially a perfect lens. Â There may be some advantages we do not realize because nobody has one yet and no tests have been published short of someone`s impressions after a days use. Â I am sure you will have no problem selling the 1.4 should you chose to do so. Â Perhaps this is the forerunner a new round of "super sharp compared to yesterdays" and some will now want to replace the 35 & 90 also. Oh it never ends. Just take pictures. You are the limitation, not the lens.
250swb Posted August 24, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted August 24, 2012 If I ever get the 50mm APO, should I send my body in for a calibration again? Just saying... Â If it wasn't done right last time send it back and ask if they can do it properly. But just buying another lens shouldn't cause it to go out of adjustment, its only a machine, not like an ex girlfriend or something. Â Steve
IWC Doppel Posted August 24, 2012 Share #11  Posted August 24, 2012 No  Why do you say that ?  I took a handful of shots with this lens and the resolution of the 50 APO was quite remarkeable, in a very being there way. I don't want one at £5k for an f2.0 but I was impressed and didn't expect to be.  It was like comparing a 28 summicron for resolution to something a lot older. I am personally not a resolution nut, but this did seem to offer an open window on the subject.  I wanted to dislike it for all the reasons I like older glass, but I didn't feel like that looking at the pictures. IWC Doppel Posted August 24, 2012 Share #12 Â Posted August 24, 2012 PS my insane equivalent would be selling all my other lenses and keeping my 35 Aspherical Summilux, you know what that would make life very simple

Printmaker Posted August 24, 2012 Share #15 Â Posted August 24, 2012 Actually, it is a very rational thought. You should order one right away and sell that worthless old 50 Lux ASPH to me for say... $2,500. You know you should. It is a junk lens.

Jeff S Posted August 24, 2012 Share #18 Â Posted August 24, 2012 How important is losing 15% of your shots? Â How important is losing f1.4? Â What's lacking in your Summilux shots (or lens ergonomics) that you hope to correct, and is that worth the above two considerations? Â The only way to know how differently the lenses render is to compare for yourself using your print methods, which means of course that you need to either rent, borrow or buy. No two people will extract identical results. Â The prints with my 50 Summilux asph today are much better than they were 3 years ago, irrespective of my shooting abilities. That's because software (LR) has improved, my papers and profiles have improved, my print workflow has improved, and so on. And hardly any of that cost more than my time and effort. No need for lens lust. YMMV. Â Jeff
bpalme Posted August 25, 2012 Share #19 Â Posted August 25, 2012 I'm going to wait to see more results and comparisons, reviews. I doubt I'll buy it though. It would have to blow me away for that price.
Rick Posted August 25, 2012 Share #20 Â Posted August 25, 2012 Is this an insane thought? You should buy the 50APO in addition to the lenses you have. Follow me here, if you can afford the 50 APO then why not buy one? It's ok to have more than one lens in a focal length. Â If, you can't afford it without selling the rest of your lenses then, I'd really say you have a better 2 lens kit with what you have. The 28 Summicron is one of Leica's exceptional optics. The 50 Summilux is nothing short of a classic, all time, all brands, all focal length, lens... ever. Â To answer your question, yes, switching those classic lenses for one lens that happens to be more perfect but, undoubtably less interesting, would be insane, yes.
