Leica Offer to North American M8/M8P Owners

I just received an email this morning from LeicaNorthAmerica with this offer:

"You can now improve the value of your camera. Leica Camera USA is offering for a limited time only, a tune up special for the Leica M8 and M8.2 cameras.

Our factory trained technicians using original spare parts will clean your camera, calibrate sensor, rangefinder, and metering system (small parts included). Pixel mapping and sensor cleaning are also part of this full service offer.

Leica Camera offers a one year warranty on all work performed together with a certification card. Cost $350 (Usual price, $475). (This offer does not include major components, rangefinder, CCD, main board and monitor.) This offer is only valid in North America from now through September 15, 2012.*"

It's good to see that they are somewhat standing behind their cameras. I've owned my M8U/P for over 5 years now and have shot over 85k images. It's maybe time to send it in for a check-up!

Thanks for posting. Pricing looks good. My question is how long it will take them to do the work. . . . I'd expect a 4- to 6-week turnaround.

From RFF.

Of course one should always call first IMO to establish a contact for any service...for details, tracking and to help expedite.

Took advantage of the new $350.00 offer. Leica NJ returning to me exactly 10 days from date I requested the service; so, much shorter than the anticipated 4-6 weeks.

Cheers,

Henry

  • 4 weeks later...

If I were to take advantage of the Leica service offer for my M8 would it require that the vulcanite be removed and ultimately replaced. I'm considering sending it in because it has the red-line issue however I've been using PixelFixer when needed and am still a bit hesitant about letting them crack the case and tinkering with it.

Tough call as the price seems attractive. Still singin along at 9000 actuations.

Leica Pro service replaced my Vulcanite on my M8u at the last service even it was not standard on a M8

It is not Vulcanite - it is a piece of adhesive plastic that can be easily replaced by anybody with access to the part, which is offered by a number of third-party producers.

The author used 'vulcanite' for purposes of quotidian. Why make a deal of it? To somehow discredit the poster? If it were vulcanite, then you statement would be unnecessary because it, too, would certainly be available through third-parties.

codocee: Does it require the plastic or whatever you want to call it be removed and replaced for this service?

The covering is peeled back from one corner of the front to allow separation of the back/front, and likely placed back after the repair. That's my impression.

From my Repair Estimate:

Clean, Lubricate & Adjust all functions

Check complete meter system

Adjust CCD position/Tilt

Repair/Adjust motor coupling

Adjust R/F

Clean CCD

Replace or clean all switches

Check & Adjust for good working order

Repair Parts

M8 Body leather covering

Carrier, M8 (4 way button)

O-Ring in M8 motor

I had them make the repair for the stated $350 price. It took two weeks. They communicated several times as to the status of the repair. One time at 10:30PM EST.

Cheers!

So no works performed on the LCD and no warranty whatsoever about it. In case of dead LCD, US users will have to pay $350 + how much to get the forced upgrade Leica solution?
