papimuzo Posted July 23, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the "M" used into the name of this product is an indication for a future adapter for our Leica M lenses or a clear sign pointing to the targetted competitor...? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/indepth/canon/announcements/canons-first-mirrorless-camera-eos-m?BI=8911&kw=CanonMirrorlessArticle
Advertisement Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Hi papimuzo, Take a look here New "mirrorless" unit from CA...N. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
rosuna Posted July 23, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2012 I hope Leica is not planning a new APS-C mirrorless system... It is impossible to be competitive in that market.
jaapv Posted July 23, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2012 It could be - if it is APS-H, fully M lens (six bit code!) compatible and has the best darn viewfinder money can buy.

I suspect that today FF sensors are much cheaper than APS-H ones (that almost nobody are still using).
gyoung Posted July 23, 2012 Share #5 Posted July 23, 2012 It could be - if it is APS-H, fully M lens (six bit code!) compatible and has the best darn viewfinder money can buy. Based on that spec an updated M8 would do Gerry
jaapv Posted July 23, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 23, 2012 Lol! I guess it would not do too well with my long R glass though, which needs a youger body. (meaning camera, not photographer...)

Did you just spill the beans, Jaap? Seriously, I prefer decent manual focusing assistance such as peak focusing to any kind of viewfinder. Moreover, I'd buy their lenses all over again if they are auto focus.
pgk Posted July 23, 2012 Share #8 Posted July 23, 2012 Its sensor to flange distance is apparently 18mm whilst Leica M is 27.8mm and it features manual mode so I don't see a problem with someone making yet another adapter. But what is interesting about this camera is that in effect its what an EOS650D dSLR would be like without the mirror box and it will (via an adapter) work with EOS lenses - so is it in fact a 650D without the mirror box? Convergence and more blurring of traditional lines.....
pgk Posted July 23, 2012 Share #9 Posted July 23, 2012 Somewhat strangely, dpreview specify the EOS M as 'Rangefinder-style mirrorless'. I'm trying to figure out just what they mean......
martinis Posted July 23, 2012 Share #10 Posted July 23, 2012 I got a bit excited for 2 minutes until I saw that M stands for mirrorless. I wonder if words will be had as when Olympus introduced their M1 camera and had to change the name? And the logical choice for the next models will surely be M2,M3 etc.. jaapv Posted July 23, 2012 Share #11 Posted July 23, 2012 Those names have brand protection (if it still is valid after all these years)
adan Posted July 23, 2012 Share #12 Posted July 23, 2012 I expect there will real M-mount adapters soon enough, from 3rd-party makers if not Canon.

Convergence and more blurring of traditional lines..... This camera looks close to something I would really like... compatible with my Canon lenses (with adaptor), flashes, it is a very good sensor, the autofocus is bound to be better than in the Sony and Fuji cameras, continuous auto-focus HD video, reasonable price. Sadly, it appears not to have a provision for even an add-on eye-level viewfinder. That is a deal-killer for me.
jaques Posted July 24, 2012 Share #15 Posted July 24, 2012 seems a good camera for folks who have grown up on phone cameras- and liveview... but want better quality images... not for me.

IWC Doppel Posted July 24, 2012 Share #17 Posted July 24, 2012 A friend sent to over to me and I was nearly interested, or rather curious. Looks like many of the others, I lost interest when I moved on from my GF1 to an M8... Yawn
BJDrew Posted July 24, 2012 Share #18 Posted July 24, 2012 Wait... Leica's "M" doesn't stand for "Mirrorless"? This is a shock! Actually, my sense is that Canon would never make a Leica M adapter. Culturally, they wouldn't acknowledge Leica with a product. If the image quality is good - and they follow-up with a more pro-specced body at around $1000 - they have a nice little line there. They showed very little fear of cannibalizing the Rebel line - which is brave and smart. It's not a total cop-out like Nikon did with the stupid little 1 series.
