Leica R lenses on a Sigma SD1

You can now change the mount on a Sigma SD1 to accept Leica R lenses. Obviously the APS-C sensor is smaller so a multiple of 1.5 will apply. Gven the very high resolution of the sensor on these cameras is this the best digital body to use with R lenses?

You mean change mount on R lens to attach to Sigma camera, changing mount on camera is new to me.

Unless you need to extreme telephoto any FF sensor DSLR would be better than APS-C sensor camera. I use D700, but any other FF Canon or Nikon is good bet, there are some exceptions with extra wides and some zooms, check out Leica & Pentax & Nikon | Leitax top resource for lens conversion.

Looks like mount on camera change to me too(?).

I have always liked the SD1 and the foveon sensor, but at the original price tag and only sigma lens, i stayed away frm it.

The DP2M is now released also, with the same sensir and processors as SD1

Will be interesting to see the uptake on both.

Looking at pictures of Sigma SD15 and SD1 on WEX lens mount is attached with 5 or 6 screws, eBay version is 3 screw fixing, also lens release is somewhat different.

Of course lens mounts can be replaced on the camera (there are few documented cases on the web) but I would advise caution until someone offers first hand account of successful conversion as this type of work require deeper surgery than it is the case with lens flange replacement.

There have been several versions of the R flange SD camera conversions. Sigma cum laude have been doing this for over 5 years and provide either flange kits for DIY or fully converted new Sigma cameras.

SD14-R

I haven’t used one, but since the demise of the DMR, it has been one of the viable R alternatives.

Yes it's the camera mount that's changed so you can still use your R lenses on Leica cameras or with EOS-R adaptors etc. I had the SD-14 with an R mount and was impressed with the files produced by the Fovean sensor - especially the colours. Presumably the FoveonX3 in the SD-1 is better still.

Some examples for interest from the SD-14 with the 60/2.8 Macro-Elmarit-R (with the 2x APO extender iirc).

I believe that the new mount comes with instructions for self assembly (Pete Franz might be able to help there with his experience). Or alternatively you can buy a new camera complete with mount. On the website, there is a list of compatible R lenses. One or two need trimming of the rear flange (a required on some Canon cameras eg 5D)

As Charlie says, you can either buy the mount separately and do it yourself or but a camera directly from Sigmacumlaude with the R mount already on it. There are two different R mounts: a light duty one and a heavy duty one for use with longer lenses.

  • 10 months later...

I have several Leica-R lenses and I also bought a Sigma SA1 Merrill recently. I do have a number of other lenses I am planning to use with my SD1M and I would love to try my Leica R lenses as well. I do not want to modify either my Leica lenses or the camera.

I was wondering why no one has made any Leica R lens to Sigma SA camera adapters.

According to this link, Sigma SA mount has the same register as Canon EF mount (44mm vs 47 for Leica R) and there are Leica R to Canon EF adapters, so I am guessing this is not due to a technical problem.

Is it due to low demand for such adapters?
