pico Posted June 20, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It was so hot in the sun today that the Thumbie on the M9 slid right off the camera in my hand, and the dealer's decal on my car peeled off with just a mild tug of the finger. Direct sun, well over 110 degrees. Ah, I love this place until the home air conditioning breaks down, which it did today. Â Thumbie not adequate in this sun. Re-attaching with the spare gluey strips one last time.

NZDavid Posted June 20, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Send some heat this way! Minus 3.8C/25F in the weekend, freezing fog now and flights canceled. We need some sunshine! Even colder and no sunshine at all in Antarctica where winter-over teams at Scott and McMurdo bases are preparing midwinter feasts.

lct Posted June 20, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Thumbie is a good idea but i would not rely on a stuck grip personnaly.
pico Posted June 20, 2012 Author Share #5 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Thumbie is a good idea but i would not rely on a stuck grip personnaly. Â I will re-think this whole thing. If Leica decided to license the Thumbie design, then had screw-holes to fasten it, I would be on it in a heartbeat. (One more thing for the so-called Next M (m10?). Â The M9 got very hot because it was in direct sunlight. My friend who wanted to use it couldn't even hold it until I moved it into my shadow for a while. The M9 seems just as happy and healthy as the old M4s.
jaapv Posted June 20, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted June 20, 2012 I lost my Thumbie in similar temperatures. Unfortunately there are no bright chrome ones, and I changed the camera top .
250swb Posted June 20, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Thumbie is designed to operate in the same operating temperatures recommended for the camera 0 to +40C, so 110F is pushing the envelope. But no reports at all of it coming off at temperatures below 0C. And while there are no chrome ones available a silver paint option that matches the chrome colour, and M9 steel grey colour, are available upon request. lct Posted June 20, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted June 20, 2012 My silver Thumbs-Up works fine and causes no play at all to the hotshoe but the silver coating is not as resistant as the chrome of the M8.2 by far.
pico Posted June 20, 2012 Author Share #9 Â Posted June 20, 2012 I lost my Thumbie in similar temperatures. Unfortunately there are no bright chrome ones, and I changed the camera top . Â Underneath the black paint the Thumbie is brilliant silver. It only takes a few minutes to buff the black finish away. Perhaps it is too brilliant a finish and might not match a chrome Leica top, but a quick glass-bead blasting might do the trick. Â Heh. Perhaps I will do that to mine. The finish is wearing away anyway. Â EDIT - Correction. I just removed the finish; it is clear that my Thumbie, and probably yours, is brass below the paint. It looked silver due to contrast. Â lct: My silver Thumbs-Up works fine and causes no play at all to the hotshoe but the silver coating is not as resistant as the chrome of the M8.2 by far. Â Indeed, the Thumbs-up is perfectly secure, but we are referring to the 'Thumbie'.
lct Posted June 20, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted June 20, 2012 I was just comparing the Thumbs-Up to the Thumbie for those who might hesitate to buy one or the other.
MikeEvangelist Posted June 20, 2012 Share #11 Â Posted June 20, 2012 I didn't like how 'mushy' the Thumbie adhesive felt, even under normal temperatures, so I replaced it with '3M Very High Bond' tape, and it is solid as a rock under all conditions. Any knock or shock without a cushion is transferred directly to the body, just as any snag and sideways force is transferred to the hotshoe with the other thumb related device, and we have seen how little that can take when Jaap sits on his flashgun....  Steve

120 Posted June 21, 2012 Share #17  Posted June 21, 2012 ... The M9 got very hot because it was in direct sunlight. MikeEvangelist Posted June 21, 2012 Share #18  Posted June 21, 2012 Good old 3M. Will it remove without harming the camera finish?  I learned about this stuff when I bought the excellent Richard Franiec grip for a Canon S90. It uses the 3M VHB tape for mounting.  His instructions include this tip for removal: "The grip can be removed if you really need to using dental floss, without damaging the camera’s finish."
