janrzm Posted May 22, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, it seemed like a "No Brainer" at the time..... I've just returned home with a job lot of Leica gear for US$1500.00, I must admit it looked in better condition at the home of the seller but I'm still happy. So what do I have and what are the issues. Leica M5 - Cosmetics good, Light Meter not working, Shutter is slow at all speeds and has what appears to be a small amount of mildew on it, also the viewfinder glass is cracked. Leitz Wetzlar 35mm Summicron f/2 (219****) Exc++ No scratches or marks on the glass but there is the beginnings of fungus appearing on the front and rear elements. Leitz IROOA Hood 1:2/50 2.8/50 3.5/50 and 1:2/35 2.8/35 3.5/35 Leitz Wetzlar 90mm Elmarit f/2.8 (221****) Exc++ No scratches or marks on the glass but there is the beginnings of fungus appearing on the front and rear elements. Leitz Wetzlar 35mm Elmarit-R f/2.8 (220****) Exc++ No scratches or marks on the glass but there is the beginnings of fungus appearing on the front and rear elements. Leitz Wetzlar 90mm Elmarit-R f/2.8 (226****) Exc++ No scratches or marks on the glass but there is the beginnings of fungus appearing on the front and rear elements. Leitz Canada TELYT 280mm f/4.8 (229****) Exc++ No scratches or marks on the glass but there is the beginnings of fungus appearing on the front and rear elements. 14127 Adaptor Mint Leitz Wetzlar 28mm 12 007 R Finder Mint in Box 12501 Hood Mint (I know there was an M3 and 21mm Lens in this set at some point) 12564 Hood Exc++ 14134-1 Adaptor Mint with Box Leicaflex Guide various other books. Black Camera Case - Well Used.... I'd love to here what peoples thoughts are on this but more importantly I need the details of someone in NZ able to look at this glass, most importantly the 35mm Summicron f/2 which is a Type 1 I believe, took a couple of shots with it earlier on the M9 and they are stunning. Advertisement Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Hi janrzm, Take a look here Leica Job Lot. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dkCambridgeshire Posted May 22, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 22, 2012 Good luck ... hope you find a good lens technician to remedy the fungus. You could try and clean the lens elements yourself if you can source a copy of Leica Camera Repair Handbook by Thomas Tomosy ... and his other books also cover lens cleaning methods. dunk
jaques Posted May 22, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 22, 2012 seems like a good lot and a good deal. The Viso iii is great on the M9- and if it is a v1 summicron 35mm you have done very well on the entire lot...
jpattison Posted May 22, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 22, 2012 With that serial number, it is a v1 35 Summicron. Well, just that one lens, when cleaned, should be easily worth US$1500 ! Good luck with the rest of the kit! Did you buy to resell, or part sell? John
Twotone Posted May 22, 2012 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2012 That is an incredible buy. I was looking at 50mm Rigid Summicrons yesterday and the prices were eye-watering. Seen at least two of them priced at over £900. BTW, I paid about £260 for a 90mm Elmarit last year in 'user' condition and about £350 for a 135mm Elmar in mint condition with it's plastic keeper. k_g_wolf ✝ Posted May 22, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 22, 2012 Looks like >>the deal of the century<<. Enjoy and for the few items you don´t need for yourself, allow some fellowenthusiasts to benefit from this purchase as well. best GEORG
earleygallery Posted May 22, 2012 Share #7 Posted May 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm sure you'd get away with selling the lot on ebay described as 'minty' condition I wonder how much the CLA bill will come to for that lot, assuming that the fungus is not so bad? Twotone Posted May 22, 2012 Share #8 Posted May 22, 2012 I'm sure you'd get away with selling the lot on ebay described as 'minty' condition I wonder how much the CLA bill will come to for that lot, assuming that the fungus is not so bad? You can easily sell stuff with a good CLA/repairer's invoice/ letter. People will pay more for these sort of items. I would estimate that the CLA/repairs will cost at least as much as the purchase price but you could easily sell the entire lot for that IMO and probably more. farnz Posted May 22, 2012 Share #9 Posted May 22, 2012 Jan, Good find! You might like to expose the lens elements with fungus to sunlight for a couple of days to at least kill the fungus until you get round to having it removed. Pete.
janrzm Posted May 23, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted May 23, 2012 By way of an update..... Well, I decided to sleep on this last night. Firstly, this may be down to ignorance on my part but the fungus, while slight is making me paranoid.....I have all manner of fantastic pristine glass in my M kit and I don't really want this stuff in the same house!!! I am not a dealer, in fact I find it hard to part with anything camera related even when I have promised too do so!!!! However today I contacted a dealer I know. I am keeping the Version I 35mm Summicron f/2 (Still needs a CLA) the Hood and filters. Plus the working M Meter. The rest I am letting go for the price I paid. At the end of the day I want to take photographs not get bogged down in this side of things. It's been fun and I have a great lens out of this little adventure. I probably wont get a find like that ever again....... Thanks for all the comments and feedback Jason
k_g_wolf ✝ Posted May 23, 2012 Share #11 Posted May 23, 2012 So we might have an infested dealer within a few days. Could we get the city and the first letter of his name, to avoid this area ?? best regards GEORG
farnz Posted May 23, 2012 Share #12 Posted May 23, 2012 ...Could we get the city and the first letter of his name, to avoid this area ?? ... Georg, I suspect that the city will be: "everywhere", and the dealer's first initial will be "E". (Or perhaps "Trade Me.com", which is a New Zealand equivalent of Ebay.) Pete. janrzm Posted May 25, 2012 Author Share #14 Posted May 25, 2012 Your quite right, it may well be one of those virtual market places if they are not sold on again before that can happen!! I have not parted with them yet though, seeing a lens specialist on Monday for a second opinion.....

Good luck with the rest of the kit! Did you buy to resell, or part sell? John I bought based largely on the 35 Cron which I was fairly sure I recognized as a version 1.......based on that I knew it should be worth the asking price of the entire lot. I perhaps hoped to hang on to the other M bits and pieces..... Ultimately I have spent a shed load on Leica gear in the last few months so I kind of made a promise to sell it on and not be tempted to keep it. luigi bertolotti Posted May 26, 2012 Share #19 Posted May 26, 2012 Fungus can be treated (can find many infos on the Net) and I'dsay that, besides the Summicron 35 1st, the Telyt 280 too is worth to be kept (there is also "its" Viso III...)
M9reno Posted May 26, 2012 Share #20 Posted May 26, 2012 So much of the equipment in this lot has fungus that it's hard to avoid the conclusion that it is spreading. Is there any way to know in what environment and for how long this equipment was kept?
