hammam Posted March 8, 2007 Share #201  Posted March 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I think I am going to price my profiles in the future at exactly the price of a mid-sized Leica filter  If someone here can give me the name of a nice web shop that takes paypal, I'll buy a Heliopan as a tester.  Edmund  I had friends buy two for me in NYC, at Tamarkin. They sell on-line, but they don't take Paypal. Only credit cards. Neither Adorama or B&H have them.
Advertisement Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 Hi hammam, Take a look here New Firmware 1.092 thoughts/ Read instructions. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hammam Posted March 8, 2007 Share #202  Posted March 8, 2007 I find it very surprising that the first shot shows more saturation and a slightly lower exposure level than the second one, resulting in a warmer tone. I think that is of more influence on the final impression than IR rendering.  What do you mean by «final impression»? I think exactly the opposite. I think the warmer tone comes from more IR. Just look at the woolen cap. Again, both photos have been treated exactly the same, ie no level or color or curves manipulation whatsoever. Just a half stop more exposure on both. barjohn Posted March 8, 2007 Share #204 Â Posted March 8, 2007 Guy, on another thread there was discussion of the split sensor issue and it still being there in 1.092. And how about the ability to tell the camera whether you have a filter on the lens or not? Finally, either the ability to tell the camera th f stop in use for exif recording or having the camera store the estimated f stop value based on the second sensor. Let the camera go to sleep, take a picture to wake it from sleep mode, the title bar over the review image still says 0/0.  2. The legend for the display time/histogram may now say "hold/Histogram" but why not "Hold/Histogram" or, if space is tight, "Hold/histogram"?  3. Was in the menu and it started scrolling repeatedly downwards without any input from me.  4 Problem with the reference pixels being corrupted by a bright light at the image border has not been fixed Green band  5 sadly it looks like one of thier fixes was removing the ability to see the preview in B/W  6 The shutter does sound different. I think I like it better--it's more "clicky" when it fires but not really louder that I can notice  7 I didn't notice a real improvement in AWB  8 Lens selection option "in menu" like the Nikon D2 lineup, would solve a lot of compatibility issues...  9 Would love the feature, again like the Nikon D2 series, to be able to put ina name/copyright notice straight to every images exif info from the meny (the add comment feature...) works great and keep's scatter brains like me from forgetting to copyright my images.  10 THINK the WBs are more inconsistent. «Tungsten» is still bad  11 I dumped my M8's yesterday and will get my money back. I got the banding on many shots without even trying, under pretty normal indoor shooting conditions. As soon as I realised this problem wasn't fixed in the new firmware and that 1.10 is over a month away I decided it really wasn't worth me waiting around  12 Changing "compression" in the set menu does not update the frame counter until a frame is fired or the camera is power cycled  13 Menu scrolling occasionally jumps two places instead of the expected one with only a "one notch" turn of the wheel  14 I am wondering why there is a menu option to turn off lens detection. Leaving it on with uncoded lenses makes no difference in my experience  15 When I finally got that stopped and set the card to format, instead of taking a few seconds as it normally does, the blinking red light and format window stayed on and on... Leica suggests/demands that all cards are formatted 'in camera' - and gives the card a default Volume Name of 'NONAME', and no facility to change it.  19 The Heliopan does a better job at cutting the IR. It may well be IR, but I think a number of factors come together.

hammam Posted March 8, 2007 Share #208 Â Posted March 8, 2007 Thank you, Guy. I'm really looking forward to see if it's me seing things, or if indedd there is a change in the IR response. Â In the meantime, I'm in awe of the work and time and dedication you put in the M8! This is really commendable, and much appreciated. I hope Leica will give you something in return, to you, and Sean, and Jamie, and Edmund, and all the others I forget. Thanks a lot, guys.
ho_co Posted March 8, 2007 Share #209 Â Posted March 8, 2007 About 6 weeks ago my dealer in London showed me the official Leica price list which included the filters. I wasn't pleased at all, they were much more expensive than the B+W 486. I wish I'd taken note but I can't remember the figures. Suffice to say I immediately ordered several B+W ones from foto-huppert.de and have just given them a further order. Oops! Â Thanks, Bob. Please disregard my unfounded hopefulness...! Â And thanks for the warning. Â --HC

barjohn Posted March 8, 2007 Share #211 Â Posted March 8, 2007 I found a couple of more minor bugs that need to be added if others can duplicate. Â 1. The exposure lock via a 1/2 press does not seem to be working consistently if at all. I can try and point the camera one place and get a reading and 1/2 press the shutter button and then move the lens toward the over exposing light source and almost every time the shutter spped will change rather than holding the lock. Â 2. The 2s self timer setting, the first time you press the button it fires instatnly rather than delyaing for 2 s. Also it is almost impossible to do an exposure lock. Instead it fires the shutter no matter how carefully I try and 1/2 press. Â Anyone else notice this?

Yes--there appears to be nothing but a half press for the self timer.  @ Guy--one more thing to ask Leica for is the possibility of an "auto ISO" feature, either from M (where you select aperture and shutter and M8 shifts ISO appropriately) or from Auto (where ISO shift is tied to shutter safe position, or something, eg. you hit the shutter limit for the lens and the ISO shifts up or down accordingly).  This is for after they fix the green blob lighting thing. barjohn Posted March 8, 2007 Share #213 Â Posted March 8, 2007 Thanks, Jamie, you are right the exposure lock does work. I thought it was to the first pressure point, but it is actually to the second pressure point where the lock occurs and a red dot lights up to signifiy exposure lock. Â On the auto ISO, why not just add it to the ISO menu? Seems simpler to me.
scott kirkpatrick Posted March 8, 2007 Share #214  Posted March 8, 2007 1. No--mine works fine 2. Yes--there appears to be nothing but a half press for the self timer.  1. The fine line between exposure lock and firing the shutter has always been a little tricky. Is that supposed to be "factory adjustable?" Or could it be loosened up in future delivered bodies?  2. I agree, that self-timer starts the countdown at the slightest touch, but hasn't it always? Can some timid soul who is still running 1.09 or 1.06 please check?  scott

I set it to 2 secs and it fired immediately. I then noticed that the ISO was still on 1250 from last night. I reset it to 160 and then without touching the release, the camera fired off another shot after a 2 secs delay, which also showed as such on the LCD.  I too had had difficulty with the exposure lock until I got an Abrahamson Softie. I think we are all used to two pressure releases and the three pressure will take some time for the brain to re-pattern itself.  Guy,  Another one for you - what WOULD we do without you.  Wilson
mike prevette Posted March 8, 2007 Share #216 Â Posted March 8, 2007 I haven't heard it mentioned here before but on my original hardware M8 the vertical stripe that used to be approx 2/3 across the frame in high iso shots is now completly gone. barjohn Posted March 8, 2007 Share #217  Posted March 8, 2007 I thought I would poast some shots of a Gretagmacbeth Color Chart at each ISO.
