Advertisement Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Hi Paul Verrips, Take a look here Fun with MM DNG files - 2 - The Girl with the Shawl. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted May 18, 2012 Share #22 Posted May 18, 2012 I don't presently have the time to experiment with the two images posted, but they are excellent photographs and quite amazing in the captured detail. I too like Chrism's version, but I prefer the original crop. Seems to me that this could well be quite a camera once folks get fully to grips with it. Thanks Jono for posting these. jedi996sps Posted May 18, 2012 Share #23 Posted May 18, 2012 Very good of you to post images for others to experiment with. I myself have absolutely no intention of purchasing this camera as i love colour much to much, but i have to say, i am very impressed with what i have seen in terms of output and the detail in the crops is outstanding. esquire53 Posted May 18, 2012 Share #24 Posted May 18, 2012 HI There This is the second part of the experiment - Thank you so much for chipping in on the cormorant fisherman (which is still available for download for a day or so). You can play with the file, and then you can post your conversion on this thread. Enjoy! If interest continues, I'll post a high ISO file tomorrow all the best Jonathan Jonathan, nice shots. Just a question, are those DNG files output from LR4 or true MM DNG? I'm traveling right now and I only have C1 on my Dell travel mate. C1 does not recognize those files. Anyone else tried the files with C1? Be home on Sunday and will try LR3 and Aperture. Not yet upgraded to LR4 Best regards Uwe
jaapv Posted May 18, 2012 Share #25 Posted May 18, 2012 I can answer this one for Jono. These are out-of-camera DNGs and C1 cannot handle them yet.
esquire53 Posted May 18, 2012 Share #26 Posted May 18, 2012 Jaap, Thanks for the quick response. I guess I'll have to wait until Sunday ... Best regards
Sergius Posted May 18, 2012 Share #27 Posted May 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Also Aperture can't handle it.
jonoslack Posted May 18, 2012 Author Share #28 Posted May 18, 2012 Thanks Jaap for answering Also Aperture can't handle it. Sadly true - they are working on it - months using Lightroom should have made me like it more, but I can't wait to get back to Aperture full time! all the best
Ellie Posted May 18, 2012 Share #29 Posted May 18, 2012 I just tried both for fun, there are lots of shadow detail (exposure +0.5 and turn back highlights) Welcome, dear visitor! elgenper Posted May 18, 2012 Share #30 Posted May 18, 2012 Thanks a lot, Jono; very instructive to get two actual raw´s from Henri to work on. I won´t post my versions here, since I concentrated on getting really good prints from them. What I did was just some curve tweaking, mild print sharpening, some ´post-crop vignetting´ (I didn´t crop...), and for the fisherman, some dodging of his face. Printed on my 3800 using Advanced B/W mode. Lovely results; I´m tempted to put the fisherman permanently on my wall, but I respect Jono´s conditions for use. But before printing them, I found a shot of my own to try my hands on, just to get some comparison. This is an M9 shot of my wife having a pensive cuppa. The main reason for my temerity of displaying this beside Jono´s Henri shots is that I used the same excellent Apo 75 lens as the fisherman was shot with, also it has hair and skin showing well, and a full tonal range without harshness in the face of the subject. The original raw file can be dl´ed by right clicking here and selecting ´download linked file´ or whatever if anybody is interested. Same conditions for use as Jono´s. For my own image, I applied some simulated yellow-green filtering, and then proceeded with the same steps described above. On comparing the results, I can only second (third, 4711´d, whatever...) those who say the Henri files have a certain, filmlike quality unobtainable from even the M9; it´s quite obvious when looking at the prints side by side. Now, how important IS that difference in reality? Is it enough to put down the deposit for the MM and get in line? For me, it isn´t. The difference is similar to, say, having to print on a different paper or using a different type of film because your favourites were temporarily out of stock. One grumbled, one had to work a bit more in the darkroom, but one did usually get decent results in the end, and unless displayed side by side, nobody really noticed the difference. If I had unlimited funds, I´d order one tomorrow, but I haven´t.... Heck, that sum would even take me to China for the trip of my life....
Jaybob Posted May 18, 2012 Share #31 Posted May 18, 2012 I hate to be the downer at the party, and I'm not critisizing the creativity of the photography AT ALL, and I completely appreciate the OP's kind offer to upload a file to work on, BUT I'm not seeing anything that screams this file is at all superior to any Nikon D3 NEF or an M9 DNG file. Just my opinion, the ability to get more controllable BW in post production is lost by not presenting the abilty to channel mix in the circled area in Lightroom 4. Control, control, control. I'd rather have a color picture to convert, but that's just me... If anything, Lightroom 4 brought back the blown out right lower part of the picture. That's the software, not the hardware. The original file (histogram also shown below) could have been exposed a little bit differently (bright sunshine, 320 iso, my estimate puts exposure closer to f11 or smaller or a 500th or a smidge faster), but what do I know? I wasn't there and it may have blocked the blacks completely up. However, sometimes it's easier to try to dig something out of the shadows as opposed to turning down the "whites" as LR refers to it now. Recovering highlights on the histogram, still makes them look blown on the screen, kind of a very bright gray, that might as well be white. While the wisps of hair above her right eye, and the detail of her skin on the side of her nose near her left eye are pretty stunning, I'm thinking it's probably the lens that gives you that...the now bargain priced Summilux 50. Again, just my opinion. Jay Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! euston Posted May 18, 2012 Share #32 Posted May 18, 2012 I found no way of improving on Chrism’s treatment, so I developed the photo as a duotone on top of curves adjustment in ACR plus some vignetting and a crop. Again, thanks for providing the file, Jono. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! pico Posted May 18, 2012 Share #33 Posted May 18, 2012 We are obviously size limited in what we can post here. I took the liberty of a large crop to try to give some indication of just how detailed and clean these files are. Viewing Jonathan's samples at 100% could be very dangerous to your bank balance. Please forgive my butchering of your photograph for pixel peeping purposes, Jonathan! Done earlier.
pico Posted May 18, 2012 Share #34 Posted May 18, 2012 I just tried both for fun, there are lots of shadow detail (exposure +0.5 and turn back highlights) Those images, as well as a few others, beg for processing critique.
papimuzo Posted May 19, 2012 Share #35 Posted May 19, 2012 These threads (THANKS Jono!!!) gave me (us?) at least that a good picture is a good picture.... allowing a flow of adjustments and staying nice despite it!
Guido Posted May 19, 2012 Share #36 Posted May 19, 2012 In an effort to rescue the original image, I tried to pump up the saturation a bit as suggested in the fisherman thread. The color response of the M9M really is poor; I hope they manage to fix this in the next firmware upgrade Welcome, dear visitor!
