The new 50mm Summicron APO has been described as bleeding edge sharp. Which one of your lenses is the one you would call bleeding edge sharp?

Mark

Don't know about "bleeding edge sharp" but my R 35 / 50 / 90 Summicrons are all bloody good.

Difficult to choose between the 100/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R and the 90/2 APO-Summicron-M asph beyond 2 metres but both reputedly bow to the 280/4 APO-Telyt-R on pure sharpness if that's your 'thing'. (Incidentally, I also own the 50/1.4 Summilux-M asph and while it is the best corrected of them all it is not as sharp as any of the three to my eye.)

All my Leica lenses (mostly Mandler-era) are as sharp as I need. I draw the line at the point where the quest for bleeding-edge sharpness results in a hemmorhage of my savings.

Funny :-)

By the way, what is the Mandler era? I will google it now.

Best,

Mark

Really high resolution and contrast wide open or 1 stop closed: 25mm/2.8 Biogon ZM, 24mm/3.8 Elmar M ASPH, 28mm/2 Summicron M ASPH, 28mm/2.8 Elmarit M ASPH, 35mm/2.8 C Biogon ZM, 75mm/2 Apo-Summicron M ASPH, 90mm/2 Apo-Summicron M ASPH. None of these is probably quite as good as the new 50mm Apo, but the 35mm C Biogon and 75mm and 90mm Apos are probably closest.

At what point does 'Sharp' become 'Too Sharp'?

I had an interesting conversation with one of the guys at Leica and he spoke about film grain size and the impact on apparent sharpness. I think most know what sharpening does when you adjust in LR or other. seems the grain size, picture size and lens, camera resolution all play a part.

The feedback on the APO was very good, he said it's amazingly sharp but in a very natural way.

Too sharp for me is either looking unrealistic or compromising the over all look. I really love the way my 50 Lux paints images and forgive it every time for the lower contrast at f1.4 and the slight softness.

I also wonder if there is possibly some synergy in a positive or negative way with a digital back and a lens that is as we all know not quite perfect !

My 28 f2 summicron is the sharpest lens I have it's a lovely lens more than just sharp

Ditto. On numerous occasions I have exhibited (and sold) 1700 x 900 landscape prints produced from this lens - each of them magnificently pin sharp. Over the years I've had both Canon and Nikon kits with prime lenses - none of which have come anywhere near to this standard.

None of my M or R lenses have MTF charts similar to those of the 50/2 asph. Great glass like 50/1.4 asph, 90/2 asph, 75/2 asph or 28/2 asph don't play in the same league from this standpoint. In fact i have only one lens which is comparable to the 50/2 asph on charts, the Apo-Telyt-R 280/4.
