Alberti Posted July 27, 2013 Share #41 Posted July 27, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Elmarit is much sharper at f/2.8 but otherwise i could hardly tell a difference between them. I can't get the focussing right at 2.8 on my 90-M
Advertisement Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Hi Alberti, Take a look here In Praise of the 4.0/90 Macro-Elmar M. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted July 27, 2013 Share #42 Posted July 27, 2013 Not unusual with the M8 as f/2.8 is not far from the limit of its RF accuracy. Did you try a magnifier? BTW my sample had focus problems on the M8.2 as well. It needed to be adjusted for digital according to my local workshop who fixed it easily. Guest Posted July 28, 2013 Share #46 Posted July 28, 2013 Is a Summicron 5cm f/2 collapsible and SOOKY-M / SOMKY a more usefull alternative than an additional Makro-Elmar 4.0/90mm, when it's necessary to travel with less equipment?
Hookeye Posted July 28, 2013 Share #47 Posted July 28, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Interesting question. I never owned SOOKY-M myself so I really do not know how the rig performs. But I gues it really boils down to two things. Firstly, the 90 Macro Elmar is an exceptionally good lens in its own right, probably better optically than the older 5cm collapsible Summicron. What macro ratio do you want to obtain? The 90 Macro Elmar give you a 1:3 ratio. As for the SOOKY-M alternative I haven't got a clue. And secondly, it depends on what other lenses you want to carry. Do you want a 35/90 pair or do you prefer a 28/50 pair? Or just a single lens? If you own a more modern 50mm, say the Summilux ASPH or even the APO Summicron you would be reluctant to leave any of those behind when traveling. And carrying TWO separate 50mm lenses would just be silly. If you own the SOOKY-M. I am just rambling... If you own the SOOKY-M and 5 cm collapsible Summicron, why don't you take them for a spin and let us know ?
Guest Posted July 29, 2013 Share #48 Posted July 29, 2013 ... The field of application of SOMKY here's something special: Those who participate in guided tours through the Alps from hut to hut, may carry a maximum weight of 8 up to 9 kg on their backs. I outsmart something in which I fill my water bottle after controlling weight and hiding the Leica under my jacket. Actually the Leica M8 is too heavy for those mountain trips, especially if additionally spare batteries and the charger may need to be worn. Because capacity only remains for one or two lenses, I use the Summicron 28 mm and 50 mm Summicron collapsible, which will change on the M8 to focal lengths of 36 and 65 mm. 90 mm resp. 117 mm on the M8 is too long and maximum aperture f4 too slow. When reaching the daily goal in the afternoon I explore the area with the SOMKY and take some little Alpine flowers and mushrooms or in bad weather interesting details and documents in the historical mountain huts. The low magnification of about 1:7.5 expands on the M8 to 1:5. Here's my last photo with SOMKY - not from the Alps;) Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted July 29, 2013 Share #49 Posted July 29, 2013 The 90/4 works like a tiny 135 on the M8. Not the same beast as 50mm lenses.

lct Posted July 29, 2013 Share #51 Posted July 29, 2013 I have no experience with 120mm lenses but the 90/4 behaves like a small 135 for me. YMMV.

349A Posted August 6, 2013 Share #55 Posted August 6, 2013 Great samples, thanks. Funny that the other thread currently going about the 90 and 135 Elmar makes several mentions of a lack of sharpness at F4 and being flare prone. Both put out to pasture by these fine examples. Good job. Jonathan
Guest Marc G. Posted August 6, 2013 Share #56 Posted August 6, 2013 I'm currently using a Summarit-M 90mm and love it but ever since I held the tiny Macro Elmar I'd love to own one of these. Still, I can hardly find the need to switch since the Summarit is that good and the Macro Elmar is so expensive. Such a pity that they only sell them in the set with the adapter (and angle finder?). I suppose the lens alone would sell quite a bit more often. I'd jump for it. Besides, I think the 90 MEM is sharper than the Summarit & latest Elmarit (compared at f/4). lct Posted August 6, 2013 Share #57 Posted August 6, 2013 ...Funny that the other thread currently going about the 90... makes several mentions of a lack of sharpness at F4... Not the same 90's. The Elmar 90/4 (right) is rather soft at f/4, but not the Macro-Elmar 90/4 (middle). Welcome, dear visitor!
