Well, maybe because Schneider is not a sensor maker? They make filters and lenses....And B+H is a large camera shop in New York, also an unlikely candidate for sensor manufacture:rolleyes:

Someone on this thread of the forum has said that perhaps by b&w (or b+w) sensor was meant B+W sensor. (B+W is Schneider Optics.) No one has responded to this speculation.

Nothing to respond to. Biermann und Weber / Schneider isn't in the sensor business.

I probably do 80% in B&W so if the price is right, it's 3mm thinner and takes B&W pictures better than an M9 I would think very seriously about one :D

I too take mostly b&w, film and digital. However, it would have to be going some to beat the current M9's b&w capability when allied to Silver Efex Pro 2.

But once more I remind one and all that the reported "b&w" [or "b/w"] sensor may have been an erroneous rendition of "B+H", which to my understanding is essentially Schneider Optics. No participant in this thread of the forum has yet responded to that speculation.

this was a joke- a speculation upon a speculation. sorry for the confusion- april fools came early I guess.

If they make a thinner, no LCD black and white only camera- others will want a thinner, no LCD, manual cranked - colour version...

I fully understand purism but I think the LCD today has too much to give and to lose it would be a great disappointment. I have my LCD on my M9 turned off. But it's there for when I need it to check the histogram.

Personally I wouldn't want an M9 replacement without the screen.

A further thought occurs to me - if there is no LCD, and an optical viewfinder, how are all the menu settings to be inputted? This alone tells me there is something wrong with this rumour.

the menu settings will be input with a smartphone via bluetooth  or tethered to a laptop. Or you can tweet the desired settings to @Leica and the corrections will be sent out via the 4g network... (this will cost 50 usd per setting change though...). There will also be a HCB setting where you can only shoot 36 frames to a single card regardless of the cards size- and will be limited to ISO 100 and zone system metering.

I'm not saying that I believe the rumour but I don't think the lack of a rear LCD need be a problem. Assuming a 'purist' B&W DNG-only camera, what menu settings would you actually need to input? ISO would presumably be handled by a traditional mechanical dial. Card formatting could easily be accomplished by a dedicated button somewhere (maybe next to the card slot inside the base-plate). Shots remaining and battery level (plus any other simple info like 'card formatting complete' or 'Error';)) could be shown in a simple M8-like top plate LCD.

i'll take the thinner, black and white only, no LCD option with a quieter shutter and manual re-cock, please :p

Perhaps no LCD is a ambiguous way of suggesting the use of OLED or other screen tech. B+W could be as already mentioned, referring to the filter company and not black and white. Im happy I am having to save until October till I get my M9/M9-P/M10 - plenty of time for new releases and decision making! :D

Did anyone think the 'Back to Basics' might be a new film camera, and not digital at all?

It would be a great announcement but I very much doubt it after all how could the M7 @ MP be truly improved upon?

Maybe a special edition re-release of a previous model, IIIf or g?

No, it's going to be a digital camera(s) announcement.....
