Vulcanite being discontinued

That is just the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The Vulcanite material is "No longer available"??? What??? Doesn't anybody MAKE anything anymore???

The reason for this change is that Leica didn't order enough of the Vulcanite to take them through M9 production this year and now do not want to order another batch, probably because the minimum order size is too large and the M10 will use something different. This "new" material was probably "in stock" with the supplier. The other scenario I've seen is that the supplier ran the wrong material and now doesn't want to get stuck, so he's telling Leica that the Vulcanite is unavailable (my guess is they blamed the tool).

It sounds as if Leica could use some improvement in their global sourcing department.

Easy guys, Leica stopped the current "Vulcanite" covering, but there will be a new, similar covering offered shortly. It will be better than the current one, better in that it has a more matte finish, more in line with the original Vulkanit of the M2, M3 and so on. So help is on its way, it just takes a little patience!

Cheers,

Andy

P.S.: I just realize that the link as quoted in the first post already confirms what I have been saying. So why the uproar? We will be getting better stuff in lieu of the old one, so no reason at all to complain.

I asked the Service Department in NJ this week about all this rumor and Carmen said Vulcanite like the covering on the original M9 has NOT been discontinued.

Yesterday I got my M9 upgrade back with new Vulcanite on it. Forget rumors go to the source and stop all this talk.

I'm being confused now. I thought the original M9 had neither true nor faux vulcanite. True (rubber) vulcanite was for film Ms. Faux (plastic) vulcanite was/is for M8.2 and M9-P. And it is this faux vulcanite which would be available no longer. Am i missing something here?

No current production Leica uses real, original Vulcanite--the rubber-based material used on the M3. The material called "Vulcanite" that has been available as an A La Carte option for MPs and M7s is not rubber-based. Neither is the slightly different "Vulcanite" available on the M9 and M9-P. The version on the digital Ms is more matte. From what I understand, the new Vulcanite is essentially the same as what is currently used on the M9-P. It's the shinier stuff on the film Ms that is no longer available.

Honestly, I don't understand all the fuss over one "Vulcanite" over another. In all cases, it is a synthetic material with an artificial texture aimed at mimicking pebble-grained leather. It's all fake. If you want "real," find some leather with the appropriate grain.

The covering of the M8.2 is shiny as well and i like its grip personally so i fear to miss it to put it simply. Have you had the opportunity to compare the grip of those "shiny" and "matte" faux vulcanite coverings?

There are currently 3 threads active on this subject-2 more in the M9 area. I will repeat what I said there.

When you send in your M9 for an upgrade the NJ upgrade sheet has different body covering choices listed. My info is 1 day old since I just received my M9 back yesterday and it was covered in what Leica NJ calls "Vulcanite Leatherette" which is what I had before sending it in.

I will quote the upgrade sheet:

"Circle your choice"

"Vulcanite Leatherette / Smooth MP-Style Leatherette" Seems clear to me.

Call the Service department if you want clarification on above, instead of talking trash.

The Leica NJ phone number is 1-800-222-0118 or 201-995-1686 or email at repair@leicacamerausa.com I called Carmen this last Monday to clarify in my mind about the subject of this thread and she said she was not aware of any discontinuing of the Vulcanite Leatherette. Call to know if the situation has changed instead of speculating.

Yes. I find the shinier stuff to be more grippy. It has a bit of tackiness to it that the matte stuff does does not.

Who's talking "trash?"

News from Solms often reaches the outside world without going through Leica USA in New Jersey. Case in point, New Jersey was entirely in the dark about the announced delay in MP/M7 production from earlier last year. Just because New Jersey is unaware of the rumored discontinuance doesn't mean it's not happening.

In this case, it appears word got out to the dealers straight from Solms. This has happened before and I have little reason to doubt the veracity of the announcement.

Rumors are trash until confirmed by an official Leica announcement-that's all. Why not stop all your rumor talk and email Solms then?

Let's get something in writing, then I'll believe NJ is not informed on this subject if rumor is fact, but until then it's just a rumor.

This would be such a minute and trivial development if true that it is difficult to fathom it a made-up rumor.
