So what about silver/chrome Leica lenses on black M9's?

I like Bill's reply in a thread linked to in the thread above (nb: no offence intended, Mark!):

1. Black in the city and after 6. Chrome in the country and at weekends.

Reminds me of this clip from 30 Rock (first in the list).

But I digress.

As for a cure for G.A.S. well, the simple answer is there is no cure, only ways to alleviate the symptoms. Much like the common cold actually. But intensely more pleasurable :D

Welcome to the club Mark!

"Barnacks" is short-hand for Leica screw-thread cameras, designed, or based upon a design, by Oskar Barnack, the "father" of the Leica.

They generally pre-date M mount cameras, although they were made alongside Ms for a while, in the 1950s.

Some cures for GAS;

Spend your free time taking photos or printing, instead of going to the camera shop or searching eBay

Set yourself a project - use whatever you have already to complete it

Consider spending the money on a trip/holiday somewhere which will inspire your photography

"Taking photos"??? "Printing"??? "See the world"??? Seriously James, what's the point of having a 90 inch flat screen television if you have to leave your flat to experience the world???

On a serious note I do believe that Leica lenses must be learned over time, and we are not talking about a weekend's worth of photos. I believe the learning curve for new Leica glass is anywhere from 3 months to 6 months, depending upon the individual. Buying a bunch of lenses in quick succession will do nothing to improve the average person's photography, and will only slow the process down.

G.A.S. is good, in moderation...

Oh and if I won the lottery I would be very tempted to get a silver noctilux and black M9-P .....

Not available in silver (apart 40 "special edition"... :o) : would it be standard available in silver I had already bought it... :D

  • 1 year later...

I have a quick question that's somewhat related to this (old) thread. I was looking at e*Bay today and was stunned to see what 35mm Summilux Asph Silver lenses are going for. ('Asking US$8,000 for one). Is the pricing up because their increasingly scarce and not made anymore? Seems obvious reason but wondering if there's more to it. Maybe the proliferation of M9's in silver? Cat # 11883, fyi.

Of course many price demands on ebay are completely unrealistic, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to them.

If current lenses are made in silver at all (most aren't), they are much rarer than the usual black version - and some people pay more for scarcity.

When Leica lenses usually were in silver chrome, there were a few in black - and prices for them are now sometimes ridicoulously high. When they started to make black lenses regularly you had to pay more for a lens in black chrome than for the usual silver version...

Same for old lenses: originally they were all in nickel, some years later they also came out in silver chrome - and were more expensive - now you generally have to pay more for a nickel version than for chrome one.

The first camera bodies were all black painted with nickel attachments - you had to pay more when the silver chrome versions came to the market. Now it's the other way round on the second hand market.

General rule for Leica items: there is always a silly reason to pay more.

i always loved the idea of contrast (silver lens on a black body) UNTIL i actually put a 35mm Chrome Summicron on my M8 at Adorama once.

it looked horrific! too blingy.....and too much attention grabbed. Some chrome on a lens would look fine, but all chrome makes it look too 'showy'. In short, i liked the idea more than the reality.

UliWer - yes I agree about Leica prices. Many find it's nice to buy Leica since they won't have the stigma of low cost.

iedei - yes the chrome can look blingy on a black camera. If the chrome lens happens to have a black sunshade that "helps" the look somewhat not be so blingy.

Both - thanks for getting back to me.

If you're worried about aesthetics, don't.

I actually kind of like it.

Practically though, I like my camera equipment to be as black as possible. Eliminates the off chance of catching a reflection or something (I shoot into mirrors/windows a lot)

Seems like I am in good company ;)
